PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING (2018) Pre-Release Thread - Page 2
This is nice. I don't know if GDT will direct; there's enough groundwork with the Jaegers, Kaiju, etc that a really interesting movie could be crafted.
I had read some early sequel talk about the aliens taking the [mild spoiler for first film] exploded parts of Gipsy Danger and creating a mechanical hybrids ala Gigan and Mecha-Godzilla.
The Godzilla thing would be fun, but they couldn't make a whole movie out of it. I reckon a cameo or easter egg is likely though.
They cancelled MOUNTAINS before GHOST PROTOCOL hit. Maybe if Cruise had just done PROTOCOL instead of NIGHT & DAY...who knows.
Not sure if there was any cult shenanigans.
That's a nice thought about Mountains, but since Edge Of Tomorrow didn't hit big, even though it was PG-13, I'm not sure the studios would throw money at an R-rated Tom Cruise battling tentacle monsters in a colder climate.
As for PR, I enjoyed it a lot, I own the Blu-Ray, and I'll be throwing down my money when PR2 hits theaters.
Del Toro also recently did an interview with Collider, and during that sit down the director talked a little big about the second film and revealed that it would pave the way for a third film. This is what he said about it:
Some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies,’ so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one.”
Edit; that teaser poster has been confirmed to be a fake mockup by some fans. But the news about a possible threequel is real.
Privately, del Toro must be pissed off about the delay and all the money arm-wrestling. But he doesn't pull a public tantrum and point fingers like that Trank guy. He laughs and makes jokes. I admire him for that:
Too much personal vision, not enough Marvel vision perhaps. I dunno personally I see him as a James Gunn type who could work with a studio just fine. Maybe Thor 2 theoretically mattered more than the unknown quantity of Guardians at that point, which is HILARIOUS.
There's still plenty of time for whoever it is directing Dr Strange to leave due to creative differences, maybe Pacific Rim 2's delay will leave enough room in del Toro's schedule to take over.
Funny, I was reading some Swamp Thing for the first time recently and I thought the exact same thing. I'm not a big GDT guy at all, but I still think he's perfect fit for that character.
Well shit. I was having a pretty good day until I read this. Bay gets to make another shitty fucking movie but we're denied another round of Jaegers battling giant monsters?
Fuck you Michael Bay. FUCK. YOU.
No thanks, I think TF 4 qualifies as a human rights violation.
No thanks to what?
The article says something about financial backing from China (where Pacific Rim was pretty successful) possibly being able to bring Pacific Rim 2 back. Or are you saying you wouldn't want that either?
Of course I want it but if I come off too desperate then China will just tease me forever and then tear my heart out and kick my ass to the curb. That's going to happen.
It always happens.

Hope is not lost, it is found.
Bear with me on this. Dalian Wanda is really big stuff in China. By far the leading movie company, and largest owner of movie theatres too (studios aren't allowed to do that in the US). It's got pots of money and its chairman (China's richest man) has talked about buying another US studio on top of Legendary. And fantasy/sci-fi/action movies sell like gangbusters in China.
Aaaand, China is forecast to overtake the US in terms of box-office sales by 2017.
Aaaaaaaand, as the local owner of a US studio, it might get not become subject to the annual limit on foreign-produced movies that China has.
So...yeah. Pacific Rim II is a possibility. I bet you the Chinese jaeger doesn't get kaboshed like a putz this time around if it happens!
John Boyega is the film's new lead:
Take that, Charlie Hunnam's bizarre "American" accent!
Not to be "that guy" but isn't one of the reasons Pacific Rim's getting a sequel because of it's success in China? So, you'd think they'd want to appeal to China with the sequel, right? But - and there's no easy way to say this - isn't China kinda terribly racist?
I greatly anticipate seeing the first trailer for this in a packed theater:
Almost half the audience: "They made a Pacific Rim 2? Why?"
The other half: "What's Pacific Rim?"
Two dudes in the exact center of the theater: "YEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!"
