It's not that I am excusing his past behavior, nor do I think this was a great look for the university.  I just think, for how easy they go on star football players at big time universities, it's odd yelling out a vulgar internet joke is getting him suspended for a half against a reasonably tough opponent.  I don't feel sorry for the guy... I'm just kinda surprised.

It seems that Jimbo Fisher is sick and tired of his knucklehead QB. I thought this Corey Clark article on Winston was pretty great:

I'm still not sure I agree this warranted a first-half suspension (I certainly didn't when I first read about the incident late Tuesday afternoon) but maybe that's the only way to truly get through to the most gifted quarterback in school history? Maybe that is what finally starts making him take this life – his life – seriously.

So what exactly this fucktard say?

"Exhausting" is a word a fellow FSU fan used this week. I'm about there. Frankly, I hope Winston never comes in Saturday night. Let Maguire play the whole game. And there's Coker...still sitting behind another QB, but now at Alabama...when he could have been starting this week had he stayed at FSU. Oh well.

Typical University bureaurocratic crap. Who issues an emailed statement at 11:07 p.m. on a Friday night? People that don't want to deal with the issue at all.

Maybe they think/know something else is about to hit and want to get ahead of it?  It's weird, because nobody was really up in arms about him only missing a half, especially considering it was against Clemson.  I wonder what upped the ante here.

They realized they could still beat Clemson at home with you or I at QB.

Huh? There were a ton of people saying that if they were going to suspend him for a half it should have been the whole game.

Even with the playoff now, it seems I still feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I listen to people talk about college football.  ESPN broadcasters are way, way harder on Winston for this mistake than they need to be.  Yeah, it was a dumb move when you consider the guy's other incidents, but they're using it as an excuse to act like he is the worst person in college football.  The only thing I give a shit about is the sexual assault, but we're never going to know if he is guilty of that for certain. Doing something vulgar on campus doesn't compare to the magnitude of if he raped a woman or not, but it's convenient for the media to make a connection.

That said, I think the one game suspension was totally fine, because he's a representative of the university and he made them look bad.  And yet, these ESPN people, who want to hold Winston's feet to the fire as much as possible, are in the next breath saying that if Florida State loses this game, they should get a pass with the selection committee.  It's the same logic that we had during the BCS era... that talent trumps resume.  Really, what's the point of even playing the games then?  Florida State has an easy schedule, and they're now supposed to get a pass if they lose one of their two or three kind of tough contests?

Worse, apparently the selection committee is on board with this.  They say they're going to take a look at the circumstances around losses.  Like, if a team had a bunch of key injuries, but are healthy at the end of the year and on a winning streak, they might not count the losses against them as much.

It's absurd.  Why even play the games?  Why not just hold out your key players due to "injury" or suspension whenever you play somebody tough.  That way you never have to really lose!

(Now watch FSU win this game anyway.)

If Winston din't have al the other stuff it would not be a big deal. What I want to know is the context of why he said it. Was there a FSU campus tv shot nearby? That would be an acceptable reason to use it. Was he saying it to women as they walked by? Just standing on a table andsaying it seems pointless.

Winston is starting to bother me though. The maturity level for a QB and all that he achieved is very low. He's gonna make me root for ND for the 1st time since that Alabama blowout.

Jesus Michigan is really bad.

Please let Muschamp go. 3rd and 23 and they convert on a screen pass? That's high school level coaching. And defense was the -one- thing we weren't supposed to be worried about.

Galen Hall, where are you??

FSU should be down at least 14 in this game.
Once again the unlikable favorite pulls victory from the jaws of defeat. Gotta love college football.

The highlight of yesterday was the look on Jimbo Fisher's face when Winston came out to warm up.

I was so exhausted yesterday I didn't even make it to see the win last night--I had to watch it this morning. Good for the team as whole, and several ex-FSU players have publicly commented that sometimes you gotta sit a game to basically get your head out of your ass. So maybe this will do it. What a bullshit move by the FSU AD and president of sending out the notice at 11 PM and then saying, "We have no further comment" which left it all on Jimbo's shoulders to answer questions about. But that's FSU administration in general--they don't know what the fuck they're doing most of the time.

As for the suiting up by Winston, when I saw that look on Jimbo's face, I thought to myself, "How many times have I had that look with my son?" Speaking of which, he just turned 13 today. He's celebrating by having to attend Cotillion classes tonight--he's thrilled (not really). My wife decided to sign him up. His team won on Saturday, but we lost our center to a broken wrist on the 2nd offensive play. My son was pretty freaked out by it--that's the 2nd time he's seen a teammate break a wrist.

I remembered the other hilarious part of the Winston thing: The shot of Jimbo profusely apologizing to his star player. You can see him on the sidelines saying that it's his fault, before letting Winston stand on the sideline so he could properly enjoy the cameras his team's victory. That's some top-notch enabling right there.

What better way to make sure he stays for another season then help him tank his draft stock!

ETA- "then"??

Because the announcement came out so late Friday night, no one let the locker room/equipment staff know to not put his stuff in his locker. Jimbo got pissed because he came out dressed out, and then found out that they put his uniform in there. That's what he apologized about. Mike Golic actually said on their show this morning that it was likely Winston just put on what was hanging in his locker. And two players that were suspended for the Oklahoma State game also dressed but didn't play. But that didn't make the headlines because neither one of them were named Jameis Winston.

Sean Maguire's dad had some nice things to say about how Winston helped Sean out with prep during the week and during the game. With that being said, I await the next bout of bad news.

I hate to pile on Winston (no I don't), but this tweet from yesterday made me chuckle:

Jimbo also explained why Jameis Winston won't be doing weekly press conferences anymore. He said trying to give him more time for academics.

Haha! "STUDENT. ATH-UH-LETES. DERP."

UCLA-Arizona State play tonight, a game I'd love to watch, but I don't have Fox Sports 1. In fact, looking at this week's slate, that might be the one really good game.

"No matter the truth, you have to recognize public opinion and pick your battles."

This is a quote from a "journalist" at Yahoo Sports on his latest article on Winston. Wow. So even if you didn't rape that girl, you just need to take your punishment and pay the fiddler.

I'd need more context (like a link to the article, perhaps) but from the sound of it that quote doesn't say what you just said it says.

Googling led me to lots of harumphing Seminole fans, but no article.

EDIT: Here's the article. Seems he's pretty clearly talking about Winston's lawyer. As in, you know, if people aren't on your side, calling a rape victim an extortionist and bickering on Twitter maybe isn't the best strategy?

Tennessee lost to a team that was so bad, they didn't even know how to take a knee.

College football, you crazy too.

Cannot believe ND pulled that one out.

And Bama loses?  Nice little bonus.

Muschamp should still be fired.

Friggin ND is primed for the final 4 now. I don't think they are close to being a top 4 team but at 9 there is no stopping them if they win out. All about FSU game now. The Sophie's Choice of football games.

SEC could start to be fun now if Alabama isn't the juggernaut they have been in the past.
ND is not a top four team, but it's as if they either have to be a top four team or nobody thinks they're good. They are a top fifteen team, and it's no travesty they're gonna be top five this week. They deserve it, just like they deserved to play Bama even if it was just for the right to get smoked.

They're not gonna beat FSU, so no worries about them getting in the playoff, Anya. Hell, I think they're gonna lose two games, at least. But 10-2 would be a great season.

Hotty Freaking Toddy!

So... Todd Gurley's just be suspended indefinitely for accepting money for autographs.

But he's still got a chance of being drafted by the Browns next season.

Makes sense why he was trying together autograph money now, then.
FSU has a major problem with Winston. Between the cover up in the sexual assault case to the autograph signings they need to sit him down. There is no way he didn't get paid for 300 plus autographs. I don't think FSU will have the balls to do it

So anyone think Winston gets any more penalties?

His penalty will be a top draft pick and a mega-million contract as the next QB for the Tennessee Texans.

One can only hope. And is that team in the UFL?

no, that's the Tennessee Tuxedos.

This is the worst nightmare of several Nashville sports talk radio guys. It's funny hearing them shudder at the thought, especially as the scenario becomes more and more likely. It's only fitting the team who drafted Vince Young would grab someone even more immature.

Foley needs to fire Muschamp at halftime.

ND-FSU is the game of the year. Holy shit.

/sigh

Major cojones on that official making that call at that point in the game. 99.999999% of the time that flag doesn't get thrown
post #95 of 271

There's really nothing to be gained by firing Muschamp now, but no way in hell is he back next year.

They could always get Gary Darnell to be the interim.

And once again a Florida State game shows the one thing I hate about college football*.  There are upsets, of course... but if an underdog gets a big lead on a favorite, and the favorite starts mounting a dramatic comeback, the underdog almost always folds. When FSU had the ball down three with about four minutes left, was there any question at all they would take the lead?  It was a complete given.  The only question was whether or not Louisville could possibly answer.

* Well, the OT is also completely stupid.

HOLY SHIT THE VOLS CAME BACK AND WON 45-42 IN OVERTIME! HOLY SHITTY SHITBALLS!

Carry on ...

And Muschamp beat Georgia and probably saved his job.

Crap.
