SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING (Jon Watts, 2017) - Page 31

BahaaHahaha...

Are you reading this Duke Fleed?!?

ARE YOU!!?!?!

Interestingly enough, Betty Brandt was Peter's first gf/heartbreak.

As for MJ, the early comics had a running gag where Peter was desperately trying to avoid Mary Jane because Aunt May was trying to set them up. Peter figured his beloved aunt would probably set him up with a less than desirable mate. He was so shallow, that boy!

It'll be fun to see certain sections react if this is MJ. I remember complaints over the casting of Shailene Woodley because she was "too homely".

Coy, Marvel. Taking notes from BVS.

Taking notes from BvS would be having the character go unnamed, and then shot in the face. Y'know, for fun.

Actually though, I'm pretty sure Zendaya's really playing Khan.

Fleed didn't like Shailene Woodley. Yet another strike against him.

...the FUCK?!

I'd be cool with Zendaya being MJ but I don't think it's going to happen because;

A) I don't think romance is going to play a big role in the movie outside of her being someone to save in the climax.

and

B) You just know Marvel are going to tease Mary Jane Watson (aforementioned Aunt May trying to hook Peter up) like crazy.

That'd be kinda funny if they Judi Dench'd Woodley.

This is too ridiculous not to be the case.

She's homely.

Very homely.

I remember a different forum I used to frequent had it's own fleed there, who once referred to Zooey Deschanel as "homely" compared to her sister Emily.

I bet that poster owns at least two fedoras.

Brad is right up above: Peter doesn't meet MJ, Harry Osborn or Gwen Stacy until college in the original comics. I hate that they've retroactively been made childhood crushes, childhood friends and high school sweethearts.

I sure hope none of them show up in the MCU.

Always.

MCU Peter Parker's first girlfriend should be Pepper Potts, thus leading neatly into Civil War 2 and creating easy sponsor opportunities for lookingforaMILF.com

At least Homecoming apparently has Liz Allen as a character Peter pines over like the original comics. We don't need to go back to the Gwen Stacy or MJ well too soon. Parker has had a crap ton of failed love interests. Or create someone new! Imagine that. Oh, and hell yeah

Liz eventually married Harry and they had a kid named... Norman!

I really want to see Black Cat.

A dysfunctional relationship with a hot burglar who has bad luck powers and only wants to fuck you when you've got your Spidey mask on...?

Ticket sold.

Like... three or four movies in? Because that's not really appropriate for a 15-16 year old Spider-Man.

My 15 year old self would've loved having that happen to me.

I really hope Peter is in college by the second movie. I'm not a fan of the high school setting and think it actually misunderstands Spider-Man as a character.

As long as Pete still lives at home and we get a healthy dose of Aunt 'Mei each movie, they can do whatever they like.

We saw the trailer for this last night in front of Rogue One, and my 19 year old daughter shushed me when I exclaimed "Hot Aunt May!" when Tomei appeared onscreen.

It depends on what year he is in during this movie.  The MCU movies are real time, so he will likely be in college in the next one.  Unless he is a freshmen.

If we're being really literal, because Civil War does say Tony has been Iron Man for eight years and the Avengers together for four years (although Incredible Hulk released in 2008 takes place simultaneously with Iron Man 2 in 2010), then Peter gets powers around December 2015.

So yeah, by fall 2019 he should be starting college.

Other than giving Spider-Man boners, is there really any point to Black Cat? She always struck me as an inferior Catwoman clone.

I think Black Cat would confuse the normals.

"Wait, I thought Catwoman was a Batman villain..."

Considering Spider-Man was created because of comics becoming popular with teenagers and Peter was in high school for all of Lee and Ditko's original run, I don't really understand how it misunderstands the character.

Bart misunderstands the character.
I don't know about misunderstanding the character, but Peter was in high school for all of 28 issues of Amazing, and graduated during Ditko's run... One of the innovations at Marvel was that characters progressed. Yet lots of people have this idea that high school Spider-Man is "definitive" even though most of the iconic stories occurred later in the run. It's odd.
Along with what Slim said, Peter immediately gets a job, starts wearing a suit and tie and dates an older woman, Betty Brant, who lives on her own in those first 28 issues. The daily grind of homework and tests is mostly ignored by Lee and Ditko, and the bullying is almost immediately forgotten as Peter challenges Flash to a boxing match and soundly defeats him.

Basically after Amazing Fantasy #15, Spider-Man is the story of a young man, not a teenage boy. That's why all of his most famous stories deal with him living in an apartment in Manhattan, not at Aunt May's house in Queens.

Before Ultimate Spider-Man tried to ride the coat tails of Harry Potter, Peter's high school days were inconsequential.
Whatever.
The best years of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN were the years in which Peter was portrayed as being a college student.

I'd be happy with the films centering on this era. In the five films we've already gotten, school has been only superficial used as a background. So much of who Peter Parker because he's define by his relationships, both good and bad, at Empire State University.

I think one of the cool things about the first Raimi movies is how he dispenses with that era. It's important to the origin, but the beginning Pete's career as Spider-Man more or less coincides with him graduating and moving to the city.

A really weird take on the era is the 60s cartoon, where they still refer to Peter as a teenager, he still lives with Aunt May, but he looks, dresses and sounds like he should be an account man at Sterling Cooper Draper Price.

Yeah he loses the glasses and sweater vest look almost immediately. Yet for some reason people picture that as his iconic '60s look...

None of you guys read Bendis's Ultimate run, where he was in high school the whole time?
No, because Bendis sucks.
I did. And I think it misunderstands the point of the character.

Miles Morales is a much better teenage Spider-Man than Ultimate Peter.
I play a 40 year old version on an RPG and this conversation is entirely too nerdy for me.

The moral of the story is teenagers suck.
