STAR WARS: REBELS Season 1 - Page 3

Empire Day - the newest episode - is pretty great.  Aside from one somewhat iffy plot contrivance

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Would the Empire really put information on its five-year plan for the Outer Rim in the systems of an apparently low-level technician?

It moves well, advances character work, has actually competent low-level troopers, puts the characters in real danger and (for fans of Clone Wars)

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Marks the return of multiepisode stories.

The show seems to be finding itself and building into something more than just one-off "Let's harass the Empire!" plots.

Probably the best episode since the pilot.   They really seem to have a handle on making Jedis special again.   The only bad thing about it was that it had to end.

Ha!  Great to see this thread has taken off.

I think the show is only getting better and more sure-footed as it goes along.  The latest Episode, "Gathering Forces" was tremendous.

Only problem is we have to deal with a mid-Season break, with the show on hiatus now until January 5th.

And it's a short Season too.  Recent info is that there are 16 Episodes this season, with SPARK OF REBELLION making up 2 of those, and the character shorts considered another, leaving 13 regular Season Episodes- of which we've seen 7 so far.

Another great episode.  Interesting that the Inquisitor answers to someone.  The Emperor?  Vader?

In the extended version of the first episode this was shown...

That answers that.  Does Vader talk?

They brought James Earl Jones in to voice him for that bit.

This has been great so far.  In fact, it's been steadily improving all along.  That shot of Ezra standing silently with the creatures waiting patiently around him was downright cheer-worthy.  And I love that Kanan isn't a 100% wise and steady Jedi (in fact, I'm beginning to doubt he ever finished his training, or that he left the order on good terms).  The show has character, heart, scope, action, everything.

Kanan is clearly way out of his league with an incredibly powerful kid in need of guidance, and now unfortunately the inquisitor knows it. I can only see this confrontation increasing his interest in Ezra's power.

Kanan was totally a padawan when Order 66 hits.  It makes so much sense.

And yeah, this was the best episode so far.  Really feels like it's moving forward in pretty much every way.

Weird that Anakin didn't kill him.

See, I'm guessing he'd already left the order by then.  He either flunked out or bailed and therefore escaped the purge.  And probably feels incredibly guilty about it.

He should!

Fucking dropouts.

I remember reading an AV Club review pointing out that very fact.   That the big revelation about Kanan is that he's not that great of a Jedi.   It's something in the Star Wars Universe we haven't really seen and it makes sense.   There's always going to be people who are not very good at their job and I suppose that includes Jedis although it's entirely possible given his age that Kanan was still a Padawan (although a pretty advanced one) when the purge went down.

Also, I'm hoping this series isn't leading to Ezra going Dark Side and the two jedis fighting to a mutual death but I can see it happening.   My hope is that they are both still alive by the end of this and the series no-prizes them into the OT.

Studiously avoiding this thread since Disney AU is still fucking us over.  But, inspired by the new trailer I "obtained" the series to watch with the kids.

Holy fuck it's AWESOME.  Totally gets that OT vibe and makes me feel the same rushy Star Wars love feeling I haven't felt since the prequels.  A lot of it is the perfect use of the music, but so much of it is the sheer "aw shucks" adventure of it with the spiritual undertones of the Force.

Just watched the one with the Inquisitor and holy balls his lightsaber is cool, in fact he's a freaking great baddie.  Loved the way he was just walking after them, spinning his lightsaber thing (also liked "does yours do that?") until he had to run. It's great that Jarrus isn't a full Jedi, but actually quite flawed and aware of it.

And it's not afraid to go fairly dark places, using the dead body of a Jedi Master as a spirit lure for other Jedi.  Jeebus.

Fucking love this program.  It's got me jazzed for Star Wars again in a way that the teaser trailer couldn't hope to accomplish.

The only reason I'm not watching more is the bloody kids are demanding to be fed instead of marathoning it through them.  Where's the stamina???

Haha the enthusiasm is infectious.  Unfortunately the Inquisitor and his lightsaber, with the slowly revealed cool new tricks is way more interesting than the lightsaber with the guard could ever be.

So.  That was freaking GREAT.  So many classic Star Wars tropes handled really well.  So many classic Star Wars shots used to perfection. From the long shot approach of ships to the feel of the space battles.  And that last episode had so many great bits, visually as well as for the overall story.

I love that the Inquisitor carrries his saber on his back.  And the casual way he disarms Kaynan and Ezra was quality.  Oozes menace. Jason (Malfoy Sr) Isaacs does a great job voicing him.

Then there's the action.  Fabulous that you see Inquisitor fighting for his life in the background. Elevates an otherwise simple shot.

And Ezra's Tetsuo moment was FABULOUS.  So much conveyed visually.  His power causing bits of debris to rise was brilliant.

I'm possibly a bit too into this show.  But it really has brought my love of CLASSIC Star Wars flooding back.

Can't believe it's on break till January. :(

It's great fun. Unlike the majority of the prequels. And the space battle in the most recent episode is better than any of the prequel battles.

Just increase the animation budget, Disney!

Any idea of how this is doing ratings-wise?   Would love to see the show continue for at least 5 years.

I'm not sure any inadequacies in the animation is a budget thing so much as a schedule thing.  This show came together FAST.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see big leaps from Season 1 to Season 2, with a not so rushed production timeline.  But honestly, considering what cartoons looked like when I was a kid, I'll take this level of animation considering the quality of storytelling the show is building towards.

As far as Kanan is concerned, I don't think it's just that he was only a padewan when the Jedi Order was exterminated, but the fact that after 15 years he's just out of practice.  In both their confrontations now, Kanan has been seriously outmatched but the Inquisitor.  And I'm very much intrigued to see how this is addressed, without a master to teach him- how can he hope to improve his skills?  Jedi Holocrons?

As of now I'm much more excited about this show than the new movie.

Some info from /Film suggests that Disney is already planning a definitive end to this show at about 3 or 4 seasons, with a Sequel trilogy show to follow.

4-5 seasons sounds about right for REBELS.  And a clear timeline and endgame will I think really help the show keep focus.

This is SUCH a fantastic idea.  5 Seasons at the very most, and then by then you've got two or three movies in this new Star Wars universe so a new animated series would have tons to draw from.  You can even bring back an adult Ezra.

Man, I love this show.

Some concept art for Ezra's eventual lightsaber has leaked...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I dig it to be honest.  Combo Saber!

This has been sort of out in the open for a while.  There's been pictures of this in toy form since before the show started airing.

Anyone going to Celebration in April will get to see the Season 2 premier with most of the cast in attendance.

I'm really intrigued as to where the show is going to leave us this season.

There's still some blank spots, but the rest of the season looks like this, starting January 5th-

EP08 "PATH OF THE JEDI"

EP09 "IDIOTS ARRAY"

EP10 TBD

EP11 TBD

EP12 Season Finale Part1

EP13 Season Finale Part2

Disney had a marathon showing of all the episodes over the last few days. IMO, they hold up pretty darn well to repeated viewings.

Show JJ Abrams the door and let the people behind this series run the show.  They 'get it'.

Yoda will apparently be making a voice-only appearance via Frank Oz, much like Liam Neeson did on later seasons of CLONE WARS.

Yoda will appear in "Path of the Jedi" set to air on January 5th, and available to view on DisneyXD app on December 29th.

http://www.starwars.com/news/yoda-frank-oz-return-in-star-wars-rebels

It will be interesting to see what this interaction entails.  If it is Yoda reaching out from Dagobah- I wonder what advice he'll have for a long lost Padewan and his apprentice.  Should be really interesting.

Random observation....

For a 'kids' show, there is a surprisingly high body count in this series.

New episode PATH OF THE JEDI now available via the DisneyXD app.

There's also a clip of Yoda's appearance available via IGN

This was damn good.  Though there being a Jedi outpost on Lothal is kinda "come on, really?", it's a neat location.  Wouldn't mind seeing Boyega or Ridley going through this type of test - and there's been a lot of emphasis on kyber crystals in LFL's recent stuff, which makes me wonder if those are going to play a role in the ST.

The Yoda cameo is just a voice one (neither Ezra nor Kanan sees him or goes to Dagobah, he just communicates with them and...somehow gives Ezra a crystal), but it's pretty effective.  And in terms of high body count, there's an illusion of one major character getting straight-up gutted and thrown off a cliff.  No discretion shot, no nothing.  Even though it's just a vision, it was still kind of shocking.

The episode was a nice bit of progression.  Acquiring the crystal seemed like the sort of thing that would happen by season's end, so I' definitely wondering what the series has in store for the next eight episodes.

Unfortunately not as many as eight episodes left, only 6-  With PATH OF THE JEDI airing this week, the rest of the season is--

EP09 "IDIOTS ARRAY"

EP10 TBD

EP11 TBD

EP12 Season Finale Part1

EP13 Season Finale Part2

I'm not sure if the short season was just a scheduling thing, or if this is the size of seasons we can expect for REBELS going forward.  I think Filoni and the crew will have learned a lot from this season, and as the show matures I can only see things getting better, especially if Disney has mandated a specific number of seasons for the show, as has been rumoured recently.

Apparently they're already well into production on S2, as they'll have the 2-parter opening story ready to show for those in attendance at Celebration in April.

I've seen the first 8 eps over the last week or so since it finally started showing here and one thing I've noticed the show does surprisingly well is somehow call back to a bunch of iconic lines without it feeling clunky. On paper they should feel like headslap-inducing fan service, but miraculously they work. In fact they don't just work, they're usually one of the the best things a character says in an episode. Also noticed that the voice acting for Kanan and the villains is better than for the others in the crew. I don't know if I've ever seen Freddie Prinze Jr act in real life but he's really solid in this. I know why the voices for the bad guys are so on point. Hera's good too, Sabine slightly more broad and kiddy/Saturday morningy and Ezra and Zeb 100% broad and kiddy/Saturday morningy.

Meanwhile, I saw the abysmal incomptence of the Keystone stormtroopers mentioned a few times in this thread, and I fully agree (the tie pilots are horrendous too - much worse than in the movies), so it was extra hilarious to see all of the cadets in the Imperial Academy be wickedly accurate crack shots while balancing on moving platforms and holding their rifles with only one hand.

Also love the music and the sounds. Also love that Chopper is a dick.

Yup....

My only issue with this episode is that the whole finding the crystal/making the lightsaber so early on in the series. IMO, It should have come after a bit more training of Ezra so that the 'weight' of having your own lightsaber is some sort of big right of passage.

It was also neat finding out that Kanan may not have not been the best Jedi out there and that he might not be the best teacher for Ezra.

Should have started him off with one of the Youngling lightsabers for a comedic bit.

Something odd about Lando's 'look' in the show....it's like his head is slightly too large for his body.

Looks like they're drawing out the rest of the season- here's the titles and presumed online/broadcast air dates.

112 "Idiot's Array" Jan12th / Jan19th

113 "Vision of Hope" Jan26th / Feb2nd

114 "Call to Action" Feb2nd / Feb9th

115 "Rebels Resolve" Feb16th / Feb23rd

116 "Battle to the End" TBD

I adored Zeb and Ezra, as always.

"I know what it means! ...  What does it mean?"

"Not as much as he thinks."

"I didn't scare it!!"

Well, at least it won't take an entire year to air, like what Disney did to the first season of Gravity Falls.

That was a pretty fun episode.

We get some Billy Dee AND James Hong guest voices.

With each new episode of this show, it becomes more and more obvious that the Lucas selling the franchise was the best thing that could have happened to it.

I can't help but compare the show to the Lucas helmed prequels....and I know this has been run into the ground...but how bad they are is only magnified by how enjoyable this series is.

Hera stole the episode.  Using the tray and escaping without breaking a sweat was great, and then punching Lando in the balls was icing on the cake.

As great as it was to get Billy Dee back, I hope he's the last major character cameo of the season.  I feel like the cameos have been a bit hit or miss, and now that we're entering the endgame the focus should probably be square on the crew.

This is everything I've been hoping Star Wars COULD be if it lost the death grip of the old guard.

Man, tonight's was intense.  Tarkin was probably the best OT character appearance, not least because he has absolutely no tolerance for Saturday Morning Cartoon villainy.  Nice cliffhanger, too.

Damn...that scene with Tarkin 'talking to' Commandant Aresko and Taskmaster Grint only to have the Inquisitor get the 'last word'.

I'm just glad they have one more episode to go because it would be a long wait till the next season to leave on that cliffhanger.

Hey, George....'shot first' my ass.... :D

ETA- Probe Droid!

And the guy doing Tarkin's voice was SPOT ON. Fantastic stuff!

This last episode was a little lacking in the first part but it got better toward the end.

The speed that they have the AT-ST walkers moving does not make for an exciting chase sequence.

Question: is it possible for a Droid to be a sociopath?

Season finale this coming Monday and they are having a marathon showing of the whole season.

Wow.

Hell of a finale.

So good. Was wondering who the Inquisitor would be replaced by. Was not expecting him.

Yeah, that's how you wrap things up.  The Fulcrum reveal was a little expected but I still find myself delighted it was who I thought it would be.  And that final rescue was downright thrilling; you knew something was coming, but to see what actually showed up, that was something.

With that ending, I can only hope we are going to see Darth Vader return to being the foreboding, badass presence that he was to begin with instead of the whiney teenager that Lucas turned him into.

I fear that instead we're going to get Darth Vader, failure knight, over, and over, and over again.  I'd be really curious to see what the discussions in the writing staff's meetings are like.  They have to know that the "fans" want to see Vader as an unstoppable engine of death and destruction, but they also have to know that from a marketing perspective, they probably want to keep their main characters around longer.  Unfortunately, the longer Kanan and Ezra (and any other Jedi that might show up) survive with Vader in the picture, the less effective Vader becomes in the eyes of all.

Unless of course they start introducing Jedi coming out of the woodwork for Vader to cut down in droves, but even then they'll feel like "cheap" victories.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
And yes, this was written in such a manner as to not say anything about Fulcrum's identity.  Suffice to say they fall into the "other Jedi that might show up" category.  Oddly, I'm even more skeptical about them keeping that particular character improbably alive, possibly to the point of showing up in the Sequel trilogy someday.
