Jumped back into this recently.  I'm not sure what I think about Power Play yet.  I like that it's there.  I like that it makes it seem more a living universe.  And I like the new Galnet.  But I tried some of the missions, basically transporting some stuff from one place to another.  Considering I only got 1,000 credits, it's probably something I'll get more into at a later time.

Bought a Type 6 last night and upgraded all the storage units and the weapons.  Going to do some more trading for a bit.  Didn't sell my Cobra, though.  I'll get back to that when I want to explore or bounty hunt again.  Though I guess I could set up my Type 6 for exploring if I wanted to.  But I like that I have seen more smuggling missions available.  Did quite a bit of that last night.  It's so much fun to come out of SC to a station, and just haul ass through the mail slot before your ship gets scanned.  But holy shit, last night it seemed the interdictions were increased 100%.  It seemed every 2-3 minutes I was being interdicted.  I have no wanted level, and a lot of the time I had an empty cargo hold.  I wonder if pledging allegiance to someone in Power Play ups your chances of being interdicted.  If so I may just drop my allegiance while trading/smuggling.

Fully agreed. Power Play seems to be geared for grinders. There are still some benefits to be had for a non-affiliated solo player, though. I'm probably gonna drop my allegiance next time I play.

I'm almost positive this is the case.

I got on for a bit last night.  First thing I did was drop my allegiance.  I then made a 20+ jump journey to a station that actually has Performance Enhancers and not once did I get interdicted.  Knock on wood.  I think I'm going to camp and trade in this area for a bit.  Found a good 2 jump trade route.  One station has a high demand for Performance Enhancers (really, who doesn't?), and the other has a high demand for Palladium, so a pretty profitable run.  The only thing I hate is the station with PEs is just over 3,000 ls from the sun.  But I'll probably grind here for a bit to fatten my bank account and raise my trader ranking.

Thirteen hours ago, a poster on reddit started a thread to talk about the upcoming expansion, entitled "Seriously? 60USD for an expansion?"

Quote:

This better be a massive expansion. 60 dollars is a lot. (Edit: ~45 if you already have the game and preorder) And judging by how they offer a lifetime pass to all future expansions for 195 dollars, this is probably going to be a regular thing. So I'm pretty irritated. Maybe its just me, but I don't want to spend 120 dollars on a game, no matter how good it is.

What was Frontier thinking?

(important) EDIT: So, I just realized something. Anyone who has NOT bought the game so far is going to be able to get all the content and the original game for 60 dollars. But if you've already bought the game, it costs you 105 dollars total. And Frontier is wording it like you get a DEAL for already having the game. That's not a loyalty discount, that's called screwing over everyone who already supports you. I don't get it. How does that make sense?

It currently has over 200 responses.

It is kind of odd, as the package they are going to be selling is the entire game plus the new expansion, and at the moment at least no plans to just sell the expansion alone for current owners. Weird.

EDIT: After reading up on it all a bit more, you're essentially paying for the next entire season of upgrades which will follow the major one. It's certainly no worse than buying a new Madden or Call of Duty game every year, and in CoD's case then also paying for map packs and scenarios. Frontier seems commited to expanding this thing every year, and you have to be able to pay your employees in order to do that.

One could always argue about the merits of the expansion or quality of features or whatever, but it's not quite as grievous as that linked thread makes it seem. At any rate, no one's being forced to buy the thing.

Just a quick note to mention that ED: Horizons next big upgrade just dropped, which adds the Engineers, a nicely overhauled mission structure (with missions given out by NPCs you can see), and a ton of other new stuff.

I also got Voice Attack and one of the big voice packs so I can now give voice commands for virtually anything in the game, and ask the AI questions, such as, "What is a black hole?", and get great answers. I love saying something like 'departure handover' and have the ship automatically thrust up 30 meters and raise the landing gear, all accompanied by the soothing AI voice. I didn't opt for a celebrity voice pack yet (William Shatner, Brent Spiner, Tom Baker, others), but I imagine I may soon.

Between this and The Division, I've hardly been on Steam at all the last couple of weeks.

All of the furore about No Man's Sky got me thinking about the Horizons expansion for this game. Anyone still playing it? How is the expansion shaping up?

I've been having fun with it. Landing on moons and messing with mining colonies is fun, and the Engineers add-on has a lot of potential, but they're still working out the kinks on that stuff. They've added some decent personality to the game now that you get your missions from npcs.

Are all of the planets you can land on just bare moons which look alike, or are there different types out there (i.e jungles, deserts etc)?

I think they're saving more detailed terrain for planetary landings and the first-person mode, which are still a long ways off. They still do a fairly good job mixing up the moon terrains, but no atmospheres as of yet.

Thanks for all of the info, Jacob. I suspect it's not worth me picking up the expansion until they add the two features you mention. Shame they're a long way off as it would really be great to land on alien planets (as in NMS) and do some exploring.

A buddy came over on Saturday, laptop in hand, and we hooked up and played some co-op AND HAD A BLAST. I have Horizons and he does not, and he was getting a bit jealous of the missions we couldn't take because they involved moon landings and whatnot, but mostly he loved (and envied) the voice commands I was doing with Voice Attack.

I'll never get tired of literally saying into the mic "FULL IMPULSE", "FULL STOP", or "DEPARTURE HANDOVER", and have my ship (and her computer) respond instantly. "TARGET." "NEXT WEAPONS GROUP." "NEAREST HOSTILE."

I love this game.

I see that Elite: Dangerous released at load of videos for upcoming features at Gamescon. It'll be interesting to see what state it'll be in when / if Star Citizen finally releases.

Hehe... Star Citizen... hehe...

...there's $50 I'll never see again...

One of the upcoming features for Elite Dangerous is the ability to more easily switch between your ships, which sounds like nothing but a net positive for all pilots. Yet it has managed to spark controversy even so, with some in the community upset that the transfer feature presumed to instantly teleport a player’s other ships to his or her starport. These players feel that there should be a delivery time to preserve immersion and reflect the travel times in the galaxy.

Caught between an interstellar rock and a black hole of rage, Frontier has put out a player poll to guide the final decision on this matter. “We’ll run the poll until Monday next week,” the studio said. “Unless there is a significant majority vote against ship transfer delivery times, along with a high turnout, we will likely be moving towards implementing plausible delays into ship and module transfer, though such a change may affect when the features comes online.”

So the 2.2 Beta is out, introducing new ships, passenger missions, and more. Here's a clumsy cut 'n paste:

SHIP TRANSFER
Have your other ships brought to
your location.

PASSENGER MISSIONS
Ferry VIPs or refugees across
the stars.

s.gif

NPC CREW
Hire expert pilots to help fly your ship.

MORE TO DISCOVER
Natural features, biological entities and much more.

Downloading now, hope to have some time over the weekend to dive in.

Hey, Star Citizen, how's that Alpha build coming along?

I'd be interested on your opinions, Jacob. I'm still waiting for a reason to upgrade to Horizons.

Babysitting my neighbors kitten has kept me from getting in any meaningful game time, unfortunately (little bastard's a scamp). Short of locking him in upstairs (which seems a tad selfish to me), It'll be Thursday before I can play the way I want to.

That kitten better be Keanu Tier cute if you're forsaking proper gaming man.

Well, this has been his adopted nap area:

Not you, Jacob. The cat.

Yep. I play E:D with Voice Attack (HIGHLY recommended, btw), and he keeps licking the microphone. Or chasing the reticule on the monitor. Or just randomly jumping on the keyboard.

You can see how hardcore Jacob is about his pc gaming. Fucking bottle of 99% Isopropyl Alcohol right beside that cat. Me, I can't game unless my fingers are covered with Arctic Silver MX-4 when I'm Overwatching this shit.

Yeah, that cat is Keanu Tier.

Heh, I was wondering if anyone would notice that after I posted it. That was for the staples in my scalp from a couple of weeks back.

I'm LOVING the 2.2 beta. I'll go into more detail later, but there are some great cosmetic changes, the whole passenger mission system is a treat, and surface missions are deeper and more detailed. Cool stuff all around.

I hope your body doesn't reject the augs you installed bro.

Meh. I know a plumber who raved about how great No Man's Sky is.
Quote:
After over 10 years of working as a Master Plumber for Mr. Rooter I can't express how rewarding and mind-blowing it was to actually see game developers properly render feces in digital form. It was so annoying having poop crudely rendered and presented on screen in my 20 years of gaming; don't get me started on being able to write with hand held poop chunks in Duke Nukem Forever.

I've worked closely with countless clients this past month and have made so much money from angry gamers who tried flushing the No Man's Sky game disc, jewel case, and manual down the toilet. Requiring me to come along and unclog the mess. When I approach and discover another NMS house call it has me grinning every time.

This game, it's AMAZING!

Snark aside, NMS is pretty damned great. Definitely in my Top 5 GOTY list.

Not sure how I missed this but:

Yeah. After nerding out on NMS and seeing that awesome new alien footage this is a must buy for me.

Just a reminder - beta 2.3, "The Commanders", drops tomorrow, and it looks very promising:

(I can't remember how to replace long links with my own text, dammit!)

I love that they're adding in NASA's recent discovery.

I'm interested to see how the multi-crew function works out.

At the time of this post, the Elite Dangerous guys are live on Youtube (from PAX) talking about the future of the game.

This has sat unplayed on my Steam for some time (as I was waiting for more things to do planetside) but, having watched some of the footage about upcoming customisation options (specifically: putting your ship's name on your ship! Awesome) and hearing David Braben describe how the players are helping shape the universe (and, unlike that lying idiot from Hello Games who said similar things, I actually believe him!), I think I'm finally going to give this a go.

Logitech had this nice setup with a chair with mounted HOTAS and a really cool curved projection screen.

Is the online play too advanced to jump into this now as a newbie? I've not played a space sim since X2, and I'd love to scratch the itch, but I'm concerned it will either be too hard to pick up or I'll be so far behind the curve it will be essentially pointless joining.

PS I've not played MMOs before so if that concern makes zero sense...

You can play in solo mode to get your feet wet before trying open world. There are indeed pirates and griefers in the open world, but plenty of good guys too.

Oh, I didn't think it had a single player option. Cool, that makes me feel less anxious. Hope I can get to grips with the physics a bit better than I did the original Elite! A controller should help a bit.

You're welcome to join our small group in a private game. Even in private games, you can group with friends to take on the galaxy. Stelios recently joined up. It's the best of both worlds, really. We only have about seven or eight people, though, and hardly ever organize get-togethers, as the galaxy is realistically huge and often we find ourselves too far apart to meet up. But it's a nice private game, and we're all friends, and when we DO meet up, it's a blast flying in a wing.

Thank you. That does sound like the best of all worlds. I think I might well take you up on that. The PC doesn't arrive for a couple of weeks, so I'll drop you a PM then.

Do you think I need a joystick set up or will an Xbox controller/mouse and keyboard do? Is a headset essential?

It's funny. Even though I have a tricked out Saitek X-53 HOTAS setup, I just fall back on mouse and keyboard myself (THE SHAME!). Some people love the X-Box controller. You'll want to take some time in the tutorials and find out what you're most comfortable with.

As far as headsets go, you might want to google Voice Attack, a program I use to issue voice commands directly to the ship. I use Voice Attack plus the ASTRA plugin, and it rocks. So immersive. Plenty of YouTube videos showing off how it works with Elite.

Thanks for sharing the know how. I'm beginning to realise buying the box with all the toys in it is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to PC gaming. Last time I used a joystick I was flying an Apache sim on the ZX Spectrum!

Voice commanding the ship sounds amazing.

If I could get two other friends in the same physical location and set it up for the commander / gunner / fighter pilot, I'd love this latest update. It would be like an actual crew exploring space! So awesome.

Goddammit, Sax.  You already got me playing ESO again.  Don't start dragging me back to E:D also.  I only have so many free hours a day!

Some cool discoveries made over the last few days:

One last video: the weekly newsletter announced today that a major in-game storyline gets wrapped up soon, and here's ObsidianAnt's terrific summation of the plotline:

ObsidianAnt should be your go-to guy on Elite Dangerous videos. He's great.

I've been playing this for about 2 years know, steadily working my up the ranks - now Dangerous.

In all that time I've never once come across anything related to these stories. Not a thing. Seems there's a completely different type of game to be played if you know where to look.

Yeah, most if not all of the story stuff is culled from the in-game newsfeeds, special missions, and gamewide endeavors. It's easy to forget about that stuff or just ignore it completely - there are no cutscenes, and very little of it is voice acted outside of very specific things like in that Formidine Rift video I posted. But it is there, if you care to look for it. The game has tie-in books, even. But yeah, it's definitely a "you get out what you put in" kinda game.

Man, Reasor would have a field day with some of this stuff.
