One film to unite us all

Thread Starter
Common sense (and reading these boards for the last eleven months) would lead me to say that there is no way we could all agree on one film we love. No way.

He loves Re-Animator and she thinks it sucks. Your friend thinks Exorcist is scary as hell, and you pretend to masturbate with crosses... a lot. Gramma digs Last House on the Left, I like Wings Hauser films. Why bother?

Its a fool that would even think about posting that he believes such a film exists. Yep, and I'm just that fool.

The film: John Carpenter's The Thing

I'm not here to debate how scary, groundbreaking, well paced, acted, directed, scored, etc... it is. Hell, I'm not even going to say that it should be your all time favorite horror film. My point is that it is in EVERY HORROR FAN'S list of top twenty favorite horror films and I doubt another film exists that can match that accomplishment. A bold statement for sure. Now am I right?

Other films to ponder:
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The Living Dead trilogy? I would have thought so, but sadly no.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The Exorcist? Some find it laughable.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Halloween? So damn close, but I've heard it mentioned as boring (bite thy tongue), and many haven't even seen it yet.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Nope.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Psycho? Many claim it isn't even horror at all.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The Universal classics? "Hey old man, those are in black and white and that makes my young eyes tired. Waaah."
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Nailgun Massacre? Too intellectual.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">It has to be The Thing. I don't believe I've ever heard an ill word spoken of it. Ever.
Commence surprising me.

***edited because I learned how to make a list.***

You won't get any arguement from me. I think the Thing is flawless.

Well for what it's worth I've got your back Farmer Vincent's Fritters.

"The Thing" is a masterpiece of the horror genre, there is simply no other way to put it. It's off the scales.

Cheers!

I'm all about giving The Thing some love.

What about Cronenberg's The Fly?
I agree. It is rare to see anyone go after JC's the Thing as they do other classics. The Cronenberg's the Fly remake is an interesting add however. I don't recall much said about that. Perhaps it's because, although well done, it is no where near as memorable as the Thing. I like that both of these films star mature leads rather than teenagers. To me it adds something.

Happy to return from exile to contribute to a constructive discussion.
I can see why someone might not like it....if they weren't a true horror movie fan (snobbish statement I know)....it's very claustrophobic and paranoid, which gives some people the willies, whether they admit it or not.

Which makes me wonder...dude, why are watching horror then?

I know he doesn't really count for dog toffee, but didn't Jamie hate all of these because they were "boring" ?
Seeing how he had the attention-span of a four-year old brain-damaged puppy, he probably thinks everything besides the most MTV-editing addled flicks are dull. Christ, kid probably would have thought sex were boring, had he ever got past the ultimate kickboxing chicks fantasies.
I wholeheartedly agree about the quality of "The Thing".
However.
I must float this question-
Isn't "The Thing" a science-fiction movie?
Dude, you just typed that with a northern accent.

Certainly, I think The Thing and The Fly are perhaps the two least polarizing pictures I've ever seen discussed here on the Corner. And they're both remakes. Who'd have thunk ?

The original Nightmare On Elm Street and Night/Curse Of The Demon also come in for a lengthy, admirable portion of shrift whenever discussed.

Jamie loved The Thing. I think it's the best movie by Carpenter and I don't recall anyone hating it. It's claustrophobic and has loads of atmosphere plus an interesting mystery. It also has creatures and loads of gore so it has something for everyone. I think Carpenter peaked here with his storytelling and a perfect score. It's strange that a remake that bombed at the box office seems to be the movie that we can all love.
Well that's it. I'm heading out and buying both flicks today. What editions are the best to get?

I remember being scard to death by both these movies as a kid. The Fly had me so scared, I hide in the hallway and watched the last half from there. Meanwhile I'm begging my mother to change the channel(HBO) and she wouldn't because I annoyed the hell out of her to watch it for weeks.

I see your point, i dont agree but would this one thing about er 'The Thing' stop you enjoying the movie and giving it a place in your top 20?
Aye, Morricone's score is gold.

Incidentally, anyone who doesn't own the DVD should leave now and not come back until they have purchased.

I've never seen "The Thing". It's actually my brother's favourite movie.

Exchange scandalised looks now!

In view of this, I will proffer "Jaws" for consideration. At least until I see "The Thing".
What about "Jaws"? I don't know that I've heard bad comments about that one. It is probably still my favorite movie (Sometimes I get mood swings).

I'd say you still love the film. Just one shot you want removed. Now it is just a classic rather then an imacculate classic. Correct?

Cronenberg's Fly remake and Jaws are two damn good films worth noting in this discussion.

I thought of the The Fly, but decided that I just didn't see enough posted love for this film. Not sure why, but it rarely gets talked about when great horror films are discussed. I haven't heard anyone dislike it either. For me, The Fly is a damn fine film that I saw twice in the theater which is a rarity for me.

Jaws is a wonderful film, but I think I've come across pockets of people (here?) that don't view it as a horror film at all. They consider it a thriller.

Wish I had the time to try and back these statements up with a link or two, but I don't. I'm sure someone will put me on the right track if I am wrong about either film. They are both excellent films.

You beat me to it.

The Thing kicks ass.
Jaws is a classic

The Evil Dead flicks rule all with an amputated self-propelled fist.
The Evil Dead films are great, but splatstick horror is only loved by 92.3% of the horror community. Really.
I'll put in my two cents, then. Sure the Thing is way up there, pretty damn close to perfect... BUT... imo, Del Toro's The Devil's Backbone is also way, way up there. Granted, it's more of a Ghost movie with a message then a Horror flick... but when someone asks me my favorite Horror movie, I say Backbone. (Mainly cause I want more people to see the damn thing!)

Horror is such a personal genre. I think we all can agree that The Thing is probably the most evenly-liked film on the board, but how many of you would put it as your #1 film..probably not many

It's horrific, ergo it's horror.

Kim Newman's superlative Nightmare Movies has a wicked cool chapter on urban horror pictures - not Def By Temptation or Bones, but horrors that spring from modern culture and life, pictures that polarize in their gene placement but have all the hallmarks of the unnerving displacement of cultural norms and fear of the "other" that horror as a genre works with.

I was going to post in your thread concerning this topic, but I decided to watch the film again first. I didn't, but here is my theory anyway:

Two people have the keys. Dr. Cooper (not infected) states clearly that he keeps the keys with him and didn't do it. Garry (not infected)panics, pulls his gun and says he didn't do it either.

Garry's reaction and the fact he didn't claim to always know where the keys are makes me believe that he didn't take very good care of his keys. I think Garry kept them in his room and any infected person had access to steal them and replace them after they destroyed the blood.

My apologies If my memory of the scene is incorrect.

And I agree with both of you.

As I recall, there are quite a few people who think that both Psycho and Jaws are not true horror films. I disagree, but this is one of the reasons naming a universally loved horror film is dificult. Opinions differ wildly.

Good points by all!
The Thing is probably the last universally lauded horror film. Blair Witch really should have that honour, but people lie and pretend not to like it so as not to appear one of the mainstream sheep.

I've never heard a bad word said about the original Texas Chainsaw.

The "classic" Hammer films are pretty much untouchable.

Nobody disses Whale's Frankenstein, or Bride of Frankenstein.

The Thing
Jaws
Alien

Are probably my 3 favourites horror movies and I'd be in a very difficult position to chose for the #1, #2, #3, position on my top ten list of the Greatest horror movies ever made.

My issues with Blair Witch. One, I like the style, and I liek the genuinly creepy bits at night.

Some of the best horror movies are when you don't actually see anything.

However. As a camper I have to say that the kids in it are teh dumbest fucks ever. FOLLOW THE FREAKEN RIVER!!! Dont' walk in a particular direction!

I've already said tons and tons of bad things about TCM in just about any and all threads about the movie.

Not least of all is the blatant stupidity of all these teens.

The 10 minutes screaming scene with gramps well that just annoys the hell out of me.

Well as I said I have already posted all my comments on TCM.

But I do have to admit that the remake looks a hell of a lot better.

The Thing is a damn near perfect movie. I love it. Only thing is, I don't really think of it as a horror film. I mean, intellectually, yeah, it IS a horror film, I know this, but the general feel of it, it just seems to fit in more with action movies like Mad Max or Aliens. I don't know why I feel this way. Maybe because it's in between Escape From NY and Big Trouble, maybe because it came out along with Road Warrior and Bladerunner, maybe because the characters are all tough guys...I don't know.

I think you may have missed the fact that they were caught in some kind of loop. Reality was being "bent" and they kept returning to the same spot due to supernatural intervention rather than not going in a straight line.

But yes, as a fellow camper (backpacker actually!) you always follow the water downstream. I have on two occassionc found lost campers by staying near the water.
