2014/15 MLB Offseason Thread

I had to start a new thread after this Giancarlo Stanton deal.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/11893223/giancarlo-stanton-miami-marlins-agree-13-year-325-million-deal

So the Marlins are cheap as fuck but they decide to give Stanton the biggest contract in years and dollars in MLB history.  Insane deal.  A bad one too.  Marlins better hope he opts out at 30 though I can't see a team giving him an 9-10 year deal at 30 to make that so.

No big deal like this has ever worked out.  Granted players were a bit older but the clubs that signed them also had the financial stability to cover this.  Didn't the Marlins trade all those Free Agents they signed a few years back because they sucked and nobody showed up?  They even included a no trade clause so the Yankees can't bail them out.

Other MLB notes.

-The Nunz is pissed Hewyard got traded to the Cards.  I am too but for different reasons.

-Russell Martin went to the Jays for 82 mil/5 years.  Only club willing to give him the 5th year.  Glad the Cubs passed.

-Maddon coming to he Cubs can't be said enough.

-Jose Canseco shot off his middle finger cleaning a gun(so he says), got it reattached, then it fell off during a poker tournament.

Free Agency will probably be boring outside the 2 big pitchers.  Trades is where it will happen.  Thinking the Cubs may be big in this.

Don't get the Russell Martin deal at all. Good catcher, but that's way too much for too long.

The Braves traded Jason Heyward., and to the Cardinals no less.

Seeing him in a rebirds uniform when he finally puts it all together is going to make me sick.

Well, he's already the best catcher the Jays have had in a long time. He is also now the third catcher on the current roster, so a trade could be in the works.

Goodbye, Panda! Sad to see you go but the memories will always stay with me...

Red Sox aren't going to buy themselves out of the hole.  Wonder if this means they have no interest in pitcher free agents like Lester and Scherzer.

This is perfect for SF. We get to leave things w/ Panda on a high note. Watching him not earn $19 million each year for half a decade would've soured things far more than leaving now.

I'd have already had Posey doing drills at 3rd during the offseason. It's the perfect spot for him to maximize his ability, so it's baffling to me that they seem unwilling to entertain the idea. But now that a big roadblock to that is gone, we'll see.

Cubs are getting Hammel back from the A's.  That trade is looking better for them.

Lester decision coming Tuesday.

I love getting Hammel back at that price.

Lester will be a Cub by tomorrow.

edit:  Giants out.

6 years $155 million for Lester from the Cubs. Giants and Red Sox dodge huge bullet.

Not happy about the 6th year but considering the Cubs have no payroll now I hope they frontloaded it.

They needed a top of the rotation gut.

Lester

Arrietta

Hendricks

Hammel

Wada/???

Go Cubs Go.

Six years for a pitcher who will be 31 on opening day. Good player. Bad contract.

Eh.  You are paying for the first 4-5. and whatever the case it means they are finally going for it.  Add another bat and hopefully another pitcher.

Cubs just completed an interesting trade.  They trade 3B Luis Valbuena and SP Dan Straily for OF Dexter Fowler.  Fowler can lead off which is good but Valbuena was the starting Third Baseman.  So unless Mike "I can't hit my weight" Olt starts, Cubs super stud prospect Kris Bryant starts the season at Third.  Great news.  There was talk of Bryant not coming till May so they can control him financially but I think with Maddon and Lester signing that the Cubs are scraping that and really going for it.

I loved the trade before I knew that Valbuena was part of it.  Urgh!   But I guess with the glut of infielders it makes perfect sense.  CF is shored up with a fantastic OBP which the Cubs need at the top of the order for the big boys.  Bryant is not going to start the season.  He'll be a callup in May.

I think Baez starts the year in AAA.  I really do.

@Buster_ESPN

Possible CHC lineup by May 1: CF Fowler, LF Coghlan, 1B Rizzo, SS Castro, C Montero, 3B Bryant, RF Soler, 2B La Stella.

That looks fucking fantastic!   Except for the order.  Soler hititng 7th?  Fuck off!  C'mon.

Edit:  We really need one more starter.  I can't wait until this season starts.  Something I haven't said in 4-5 years being a Cubs fan.

Jesus!  Scherzer got 7/210M?!?!

I'm really happy with the Lester signing even more now.

They had the #1 staff in baseball so not sure why they signed him.  Put your money somewhere else.  Esp with their shitty division.  Everyone blows.  They won by 17 games and nobody in their division did anything to improve.

Yeah, but you can never have enough pitching.  That staff is insane right now, their window is 2-3 years to win a WS and they have the money, so go for it.

I think this signing has a lot to do with expectations.  The Nats expected to be World Series bound the last two years, and have not come particularly close either time.  So they throw money at another ace.  Postseason is all about picthing, but it's not all about stockpiling a staff full of aces, necessarily.  Just ask the Phillies.

So true.  You just never know.  It's who is hot at that particular time, but it doesn't hurt to stockpile pitching.  All you need is one hot pitcher to carry you.  Bumgarner

Just came out of Selma to learn Ernie Banks died.  Fucking huge bummer.  Greatest Cub of all time.  Liked mist Cub fans I have my autographed Ernie Banks ball.  Shame he wouldn't be able to see this young Cubs team try and win it all.

This move does let them trade one of their other pitchers, three of whom will be hitting free agency for big bucks in the next couple years. In that context, it makes sense. If they don't trade a pitcher for a bat, it's a weird move.

It'd be hilarious if anyone tried to replicate the, "Expect one of our aces to make one of the all-time greatest runs and carry us" strategy the Giants employed so brilliantly. :)

My fantasy baseball league is in its 14th year.  Used to have a few guys from CHUD, but not sure if any of them remain.

We have a few spots open this year.  It's a competitive league.

Run on Yahoo.

100.00 buy-in.  50/30/20% split for top three finishers.

26 man rosters.

OBP and QS instead of BA and Wins (the way Cthulhu intended).

C/1B/2B/3B/SS/CI/MI/LF/CF/RF/OFx2/UTIL/SPx5/RPx5/Benchx4/DLx4/NAx1.

Draft is March 14th, 11:00 a.m.

If interested, PM me.

Let me get this straight-The Yankees are dragging ARod for PED's yet are retiring Andy Petite's number this year.  Unreal.

LoL.  Cubs are considering playing games at Miller Park in Milwaukee because Cubs fans don't want to go to US Cellular field.

*Assuming the have to.  Wrigley construction is a bit behind.

Cubs are on WGN today!  YES!   No Bryant in the lineup today!  BOOOOO!!!!

Russell and Bryant are tearing shit up this spring.

Kris Bryant is crazy good.  Four more hits today and the game is still in the 4th inning.
