X-MEN: APOCALYPSE (Pre-Release)

It may be nobody's favorite superhero franchise but it seems like we may as well have a dedicated X-Men: Apocalypse thread seeing as news about the movie has popped up in other threads.

Quote (From The Wrap):

Chloe Moretz and Hailee Steinfeld are up for a role, as is “Interstellar” actor Timothee Chalamet

Chloe Moretz, Elle Fanning and Oscar-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld are among the teenage leading ladies being eyed to play young Jean Grey in Bryan Singer‘s “X-Men: Apocalypse,” while Ben Hardy, Charlie Rowe and Timothee Chalamet are under consideration for the role of young Cyclops, multiple individuals familiar with the 20th Century Fox project have told TheWrap.

20th Century Fox had no comment on the respective shortlists.

While a representative for Moretz didn't respond to multiple requests for comment, an insider confirms that she and Fanning were among the girls who met with Singer in recent weeks as he commenced his search for young Jean Grey, who is expected to recur in future “X-Men” movies.

Sources caution that official test offers for the role of Jean Grey have not been made yet and not only are other up-and-comers still in the mix, but it's unclear whether Fanning is even pursuing the high-profile role at this time.

What's clear at this point is that Singer is aiming high for the role of young Jean Grey, while the director seems more open to casting a fresh face as Cyclops. The on-and-off couple, often considered the emotional center of the “X-Men” universe, have existed in the comics since the team was launched in the 1960s, with those younger versions recently transported to present day for a major arc under writer Brian Michael Bendis.

Famke Janssen played Jean Grey in five “X-Men” movies, with Haley Ramm portraying the character in “X-Men: The Last Stand.” Cyclops, aka Scott Summers, has been portrayed by James Marsden in four films and by Tim Pocock in “X-Men: Origins: Wolverine.”

“X-Men: Apocalypse” takes the franchise in a new direction, and producer Simon Kinberg has already revealed that the film will bring in younger actors to play Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey.

“X-Men Apocalypse” will highlight Magneto's romance with Mystique, putting stars Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence front and center, which is right where Fox — and audiences — want them.

“Apocalypse” is scheduled to start production in the spring, as Fox will release the film on May 27, 2016. The most recent entry in the comic book franchise, “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” grossed nearly $750 million worldwide.

Oh man, just put an Adamantium bullet in this franchise.

Ben Hardy is wooden as fuck. Probably a perfect choice for Singer's bland, characterless approach to Cyclops.

This "highlighting Magneto and Mystique" stuff is so terrible. Fassbender and Lawrence arguably gave career-worst performances in DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. They're okay, but they so obviously don't want to be there. McAvoy is where it's at in terms of the heartbeat of this new crew.

I completely agree with this. Of all the actors, he should definitely be front and center. His journey from broken man to a teacher of others still has so many facets to explore, especially if they're going to start bringing in the original X-Men team now.

He's also having real fun with it. He went bonkers at comic con last year (or the year before I can't remember). He seems to give a shit.

I love James McAvoy. Not in a sexy time way but in the way a bee-keeper loves his bees.

As bizarre an analogy as that was I complete understand and agree.

I'm both fascinated and completely uninterested in this film. I don't really care how they interpret Apocalypse, I just want to see how they will keep trying to keep the franchise from flying off a cliff.

Are any of Singer's original cast in it? I assume Jackman is but was DOFP the last hurrah for Stewart and McKellen?

I'll decide whether to check or maintain interest once they choose their Apocalypse. That's gonna need some mighty fine precision casting to make such a weird FX-heavy character work, and if it's just a lunkhead of the week getting the gig or someone completely different from the booming demigod of the comics then I'll probably shrug and forget about the movie until release.

I guess I'll be the one guy who's looking forward to this.  DOFP was great IMO and I've been waiting to see Apocalypse on-screen since X2.

As for casting said En-Sabah-Nur.  I still stand by my one choice since the movie was announced.

Gotta be Brian Blessed, man.

It is.

He's a great second choice. After Brian Blessed, of course.

BRIAN BLESSED WILL NOT BE PRESENT FOR THE APOCALYPSE! BRIAN BLESSED IS GOING TO THE MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I couldn't agree more.

I can't wait to see how they try and make logical sense of the timeline now. Adding in Mystique as Stryker in the editing room was such a misinformed decision.

As someone who stopped reading comics in the early 80's, maybe someone can clarify this for me: How much difference is there between Thanos, Apocalypse and Darkseid? It seems like the respective film series are building towards clashes with these super villains and I'm wondering if they all might be too similar.

They're all basically the same guy.

It's going to take Marvel 17 movies before introducing Thanos as the big bad. Warner Bros. Is going to rush Darkseid in to keep up. Fox is going to make Apocalypse out to be the villain of the week and I'm willing to bet Magneto is going to be the major foil once again.

Unless Singer decides to start doing comic book movies I really can't see how general audiences could see his Apocalypse being similar to Thanos.  And Darkseid... well WB needs to make the Superman franchise carry its own weight before they can start introducing villains that aren't named Lex Luthor or Zod.  The only film franchise right now that's geared in the slightest for adapting a Kirby-esque villain is Marvel.

Why is fox casting elementary school kids as cyclops?

Lame!  I don't mind Isaac but he's all kinds of wrong for Apocalypse.

I cast movies better than Bryan Singer does.

I'm interested to see what he will look like. I'll eat my wrists if he looks anything like the comics.

Some interesting fanart concepts...

Geez, even the fan-art can't resist shoehorning Wolverine in.  Kidding aside, that does look cool.

Honestly, I think they'll just play off of the post-credit scene of DOFP and make him a normal dude that's pale with some blue markings on him.  In fact I'm willing to bet on it.  They want a face for the villain and Isaac's stock is rising.  Plus, they might be worried about copying Thanos.

They don't have to worry about copying Thanos. We've barely seen him.

Fox would be monumentally dumb not to go all-out here and have Apocalypse be giant and weird and god-like. They can beat Marvel and Warners to the Thanos/Darkseid punch by a good two years.

I like it. Sure, he doesn't have the physical traits we were all expecting but I'd rather they went with a good actor than just someone who looks like the comic book counterpart. I hope they keep the blue mouth thing.

Incidentally, the fanart I posted above used Dwayne J as the model.

Hey look guys it's Taller Ronan The Accuser
post #31 of 1520
So it looks like we've seen the last of Sirs Ian and Patrick in these films.

I predict that in this film the team battle Apocalypse with the reluctant help of Magneto. Then once they've beaten Apocalypse Magneto turns against them and tries to kill all the humans. They defeat Magneto and he ends up in prison. I know it's out there but that's what I think will happen.

Oh that Magneto...

ALWAYS going for that back-stab no matter what!

"That Magneto!" would make a wonderful sitcom.

"Honey! Where's the frying pan?"
"Did you check the back of your head?"

Maybe we need a spoiler version of this thread too!

Yeah, in Days of Future Past, Old Magneto dickishly (and far too easily) convinces the rest of them to bust him out of prison because "they'll need his help as well." Only for him to not do one single solitary thing to aid Charles or Logan. He almost IMMEDIATELY goes into "fuck them over" mode.

He is the villain though, so I don't know why I found that part kinda jarring..

Ha! I never actually thought about that. This actually makes me love McKellan's Magneto even more.

Kodi Smit-McPhee was just announced as a young Nightcrawler.  Huzzah!

Nightcrawler's always been one of my favourite X-Men and Smit-Mcphee is actually a really good actor.  Really happy with this announcement.

Yay!  Fingers crossed we get awesome swashbuckler Kurt.  I want to see him wield a sword with his tail, goddammit.

Nightcrawler is a great character and it's a shame he hasn't been used more in the movie franchise. This is the first decision I actually give a damn about for this movie.

Agree that Smit McPhee is a solid choice for Nightcrawler, but I am a bit disappointed... I think he would've made a great rebooted-in-MCU Peter Parker as well.

Here we go again.

So, Olivia Munn is Psylocke.

Uhhh...

She was the third best actor in the misbegotten Newsroom after Jeff Daniels and Sam Fucking Waterston and she's hot. She'll do fine.

Olivia munn really, really does it for me...

The fact that she's willing to fuck a disgusting pig like Ratner weirdly makes it hotter.

So, reading up on Psylocke's powers (havent read much of her comic appearances), she seems to be a combo of Jean Grey, Elektra, and Blink.

Teleporting ninja with psychic powers. We've seen all that before, yeah?

Also, she's actually a very Anglo Brit whose mind was transferred into a Japanese ninja body. That's what makes her unique.

The teleporting must be new. She didn't used to do that.
