Ok so this movie is really happening. From Variety:

Suicide Squad Cast: Jared Leto as

Jared Leto, Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne will make up the all-star cast of Warner Bros.’ supervillain tentpole “Suicide Squad,” it was announced on Tuesday.

Based on the DC comicbook, the story centers on the team of supervillains who are given a chance at redemption by the government. The catch: Their mission will probably kill them all.

The actors’ names had long been rumored for the high-profile movie, which opens Aug. 5, 2016, but their deals and characters hadn’t been finalized.

Here’s the official cast/character list:

Jared Leto – The Joker

Will Smith – Deadshot

Tom Hardy – Rick Flag

Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn

Jai Courtney – Boomerang

Cara Delevingne – Enchantress

“Suicide Squad,” directed by David Ayer and produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, will begin shooting next April in Toronto.

According to insiders, Jesse Eisenberg is also in talks to play Lex Luthor in the film, a role he will first play in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” though the status of his deal is unknown.

“The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one,” Warner Bros. president Greg Silverman said in a statement. “We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under David Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”

Warners has long viewed this project as the “Ocean’s Eleven” of comicbook movies and has been looking to load up the roster with top tier talent.

Warners still has the role of Amanda Waller, the character who oversees the team (similar to Nick Fury in the Marvel universe), to cast before the film goes into production. The studio’s shortlist of actresses being eyed for the role includes Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey, whom sources say would be WB’s first choice for the part.

Leto, who is making his first pic since winning the Oscar for “Dallas Buyers Club,” is repped by CAA and Untitled.

Smith can be seen next in Warner Bros.’ “Focus” which also stars Robbie. Both are reppped by CAA, with Robbie also repped by Management 360 and Aran Michael Management, and Smith repped by Overbrook Entertainment.

Hardy is currently filming “The Revenant” opposite Leonardo DiCaprio which bows next Christmas. He is repped by CAA.

The WME-repped Delevingne, an English model-turned-actress, can next be seen in Warner Bros.’ “Pan.”

Courtney appears in the upcoming “Terminator” reboot as well as Universal’s “Unbroken” and Lionsgate’s “Insurgent,” and is repped by UTA and Silver Lining Entertainment.

I wonder if Smith will pressure them to cast his kid in this. Making him famous seems to be his only agenda for the past decade.

Still have a hard time believing that Will Smith is signed and confirmed to be in this.

Willing to bet it's conditional on Jayden Smith replacing Henry Cavill as Superman.

Title change pending?

Well Johnny, there's no crazy useless subtitle yet, so it's not a full title.

If Warner Bros release a PG-13 movie called Suicide Squad it may just be financial suicide. There's no way that name ain't changing.

I'm hearing it might be an R.

I am more intrigued by this than any other upcoming superhero movie.

I don't doubt what WB release will be PG-13, but there's content in the script for an R.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Jai Courtney, as he won't be hobbled by faking an american accent - perhaps he's a decent actor after all but only when speaking australian

I'm looking up Jared Leto Joker manips and I have to say I'm very disappointed in the internet at the current offerings.

Not going to happen. As far as the title is concerned, dumber things have happened, but I wouldn't bet on it changing to the Willful Abdication of Breathing Squad anytime soon. On its face, the casting of Leto is pretty obvious. He's "so hot right now" and there's a Ledger vibe that I think they wish to affect. I can imagine people complaining about Leto for whatever reason, but hindsight being 20/20, those complaints won't be nearly as loud as they were back in 2007.

Again, what Ayer's cut will be and what WB releases are two different things. But I'm betting we get an unrated home video release.

As for the title they're already called the Suicide Squad on network TV.

Oprah is their first choice for Amanda Waller. That really seems like shooting for the moon.

Maybe, but not in a title....

This Suicede Squad animated flick is called "Assault on Arkham":

I'm guessing they go "Bad Company" or "Troublemakers" or something akin to that.

Edit: So Will Smith and Samuel L Jackson are going to have matching eyepatches?

They could just repurpose Bassett for this as it's not like anyone remembers whatever she did in Green Lantern. Casting Winfrey strikes me as a bit absurd, but I suppose it's because I generally don't think of her as an actor, even though she's a perfectly fine one.

Will Smith is an interesting situation. I think he needs this and is probably no longer the big, swinging dick that could point at and get whatever crossed his line of sight.

Its just them further distancing themselves from the GL mess. I liked whoever suggested in one of the other DC threads that they skew younger and get Kerry Washington.

Octavia Spencer was my choice (and, apparently, is one of WB's two choices alongside Viola Davis if Oprah passes), but Oprah could be genuinely inspired, or just totally insane.

And yeah, with Leto they're definitely going for the Ledger vibe.  Which is unfortunate, because Margot Robbie could totally pull off a B:TAS-inspired Harley.

I'm a Deadshot fan.  I think he's a cool character...  But how come we've got Will Smith, a big old star with a capital S playing a relatively B list villain?  Why isn't he an A List hero?

I'm excited by the insane cast.  Hope it's good.  Ayer's cool.  Fury and End of Watch are good...  But they're not at the level that my hopes for this project are if that makes sense.  I'm worried he can't deliver.

Weren't they called Task Force X in that Justice League episode? They could easily call it that.

He's made better movies than James Gunn did before Guardians so anything can happen when given a high profile pic like this.

Actually, I think they're going more for the Dark Knight Returns style Joker. Tell me you can't imagine Leto playing the Joker like this which would separate him enough from Ledger's interpretation so as not to draw comparisons.

I like a couple of Ayer's films, but his ceiling is pretty low. Put a paper bag over the gratuitous violence and I'm not sure how much he has left to work with.

I don't know that that's a parallel you can draw.  Gunn had an inventiveness and a playfulness and was limited by budget, among other things, possibly.  It feels like Whedon's success allowed the higher ups to identify Gunn as someone who could make a similar jump, given their shared roots in quirky genre stuff.  Whereas Ayer, maybe he has made more polished films than Super or Slither, but it feels (to me anyway) like he's making the films that are in his wheelhouse.  I have never watched an Ayer movie and thought there was the potential for something else (Harsh Times sort of, but only because the first half fooled me into thinking maybe he was doing something different.)  He doesn't seem innovative or a source of untapped potential.  I think he was hired because they believe he'll make it feel gritty, and visceral- not because they expect him to make a big leap forward as a filmmaker.

Will Smith should be playing Deathstroke.

I don't know the comic, but I just hope Smith and Hardy are the stars and Leto is support.  I find it odd that their new Joker is going to be introduced in a film where at least two of the actors have tons more charisma than Leto could ever hope to possess.  It's one thing putting him against Affleck and whatshisname who plays Superman, another introducing him alongside other villains who should steal the show.

They're just going to keep us guessing which characters aren't going to be making it back from this mission, aren't they?

Joker's never been a member of the Squad - I'm guessing he's an X-factor who shows up later in the film a la Assault on Arkham.  I'm sure they wanted a marquee villain to advertise, but I can't see Waller thinking she could possibly control the Joker.  Deadshot and Flag are definitely traditional Squad stars (as is Boomer, but I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up dead), so it is probably gonna focus on them - especially with those names attached.

And it sounds like they are still trying to get Eisenberg in here, so we may get a Lex/Joker team-up or showdown.

Didn't Smith say he wont do a movie unless he's the lead?

Oh shit, nevermind.

His DNA is the lead. Still counts.

What I mean is, headlining a movie, not part of a team/ensemble.  I don't see him making a movie like this before the After Earth debacle...it's why everybody's so surprised.

I've only seen Sabotage from him...if that unbearable piece of shit is any indication, this film's got problems already.

What's weird is that Deadshot is in no way shape or form the leader of the team. He's the.... Hawkeye. Evil hawk guy.

I don't think he's got the face where you can just add photoshop paint, and voilà, you get the Joker.

If they go with more subtle makeup than what we saw with Ledger's Joker, I hope they also use prosthetics, because Leto is almost too handsome to be the Joker. I mean, Ledger was too, but he had so much makeup caked on, that he was unrecognizable.

Ugh.

It's safe to say with the general lack of creativity from the Batman stuff we have seen so far, Leto is going to be doing a slightly effeminate, white suit Dark Knight Returns Joker.  Because if there's one thing Frank Miller hates it's FAGS, and because of that he's a great villain. I really wish they weren't borrowing so heavily from a Bat world that isn't really the Bat world I recognize for literally any other story than TDKR.  It's so weird to see a stand alone thing adapted into something that's supposed to play nice with the other franchises.

I know I probably won't get it, but I hope with my whole heart that somehow some way Leto manages to pull off the Hamill Animated Series style Joker.  Fun and whacky and goofball but with that sadistic creepy edge.

CCH Pounder is such obvious casting for Waller that they already did it in the cartoon, and yet they still manage to screw it up in the movie. Come on WB!

Also, damn I hope Smith is rockin' the pornostache from the comics.

Hold on I think we're jumping the "BANG" flag gun here.

We don't know what type of Joker he is playing he was just cast.
