Suicide Squad pre-release discussion thread - Page 41

Man, they couldn't be advertising that Slipknot is totally the guy that puts the "Suicide" in Suicide Squad if they tried, could they?  His stinger doesn't even have any lines (though to be fair, at least he got one)!

Well that answers the question of how long Adam Beach lasts.

EDIT: or what Jmacq said.

Brief discussion with the costume designer and Ayers about HQ.

I think we're going to get a shitload of thinkpieces about her once the film hits.

I like what they have to say about it!

I know Robbie said they tried dozens of different costumes, even the classic jester, but she said she looks really stupid in it.
When this hits, let's maybe keep the think piece posting light. Your mileage may vary, but my interest in getting bogged down with the "sociopolitical reverberations" of funny book characters has probably reached its peak.

My thinkpiece: "Would hug."
Who do those costume lady, director man and actor lady think they are? What do their carefully considered choices matter next to the jerking of my knee?

Yes. I just can't break down teenage boy fantasy anymore. And so help me god if I see anything from fucking HULK posted here about this.

That is a member of the community request by the way, not a moderator demand. It could very well be that the movie pulls a Snyder and makes a series of miscalculations (or even outright statements) that opens it up to several criticisms beyond its face value merit or lack thereof. However, I think *most* of us know strict ideological purgatory when we see it. That's all.

Commentary surrounding Harley in the comics is already pretty insufferable. I can only imagine what it'll be like when she hits the wider consciousness.

That I'm not looking forward to. The movie itself, though, I am-- more every day, I think.

The jester look is basically a spandex leotard, and one thing the comic books movies have pretty much figured out is that spandex onesies do not translate.

Let's be honest, they could have achieved something closer to her traditional costume and made it, but all the costumes point to a "urban punk" aesthetic, so that's what they really wanted, hence the rather blatant Debbie Harry influence for Harley.
Well that, and most comics for the past 10 years have had her follow that Hot Topic aesthetic.

Plus ya know............dat ass.

You keep taunting Johnny with female objectification and... Well I guess we'll see.

Because that's clearly what the film is doing. It's why they cast Robbie and it's why they have that shot in movie and trailer. They can wax on all they want but while I don't think it's impossible to transcend the material at the end of the day it seems she was designed for teenage boy comic fans. You are either ok with that or you aren't but that's at least partly what the film is doing.

Exactly. There are some people who can look good in almost anything and Margot Robbie could have easily pulled off that jester costume.

Also, thanks for inspiring me to go and watch some Blondie videos; thereby re-igniting my  ♥  for Debbie Harry.

Debbie Harry can't be out-cooled.

I got this weird feeling that Waller is going to end up the MVP in this, and people are going to be indifferent towards Joker.

That's not a weird feeling at all.  Waller is an amazing character when done right, and Davis definitely has the right kind of coldblooded steeliness to play the role well.

So... fingers crossed she's done right.

I'm hoping she's conniving, ambiguous, contained psycho she should be. And I hope she pulls something way more fucked up than the inevitable (and telegraphed, at this point) blowing up of Skipknot.

I think Captain Boomerang will walk away with most of the audience chuckles, and we'll all have to grudgingly live in a world where our former cinematic enemy, Jai Courtney, is suddenly the King of all he surveys.

I had a dream last night that I saw this movie. PM for dream spoilers.

Will Sam Worthington's stock experience a similar rise through symbiosis?

We don't speak that name around these parts, Sir. Kindly remove yourself to the nearest restroom where you should scrub your typing fingers with soap for twenty minutes, and then visit your garden to collect a long tree branch with which to whip yourself. Thirty strokes should do it.

And take that fucking mask off.

Real talk, is there anything that people point to as Sam Worthington's one decent role? At least Jai Courtney had Spartacus

Well...he wasn't COMPLETELY awful in Terminator: Disappointing Future War.

Back to the movie...

I read recently that Leto met with Grant Morrison to discuss the character of the Joker and give some advice on it before filming began. Kind of made me realise that Leto looks a hell of a lot like The Joker in Batman R.I.P. just with some added ink:

I think that's the problem, he hasn't been completely awful in anything which would at least be amusing. He is achingly, crushingly dull in his basic competency.

EDIT: Whoops, re-derailed.

I don't know, his performance in Man on a Ledge was pretty funny.

I still feel unclean. Is this normal?

Yeah, I missed that sliver of information back in 2015. It doesn't surprise me that Morrison had a hand in the look and I'm glad they went to him.

Why? It's not only a very Joker-like thing to do (that I recall happening in the comics at least half a dozen times), but it's a weird aside that we've not seen on film before. The only thing that comes close is the Nurse Joker bit in The Dark Knight.

This movie needs Batman as much as this board does.

I saw the big cardboard standup display with all the characters in the IMAX lobby. It would've been cool except for the annoyingly loud graphic design of the backdrop. I'm ready for this marketing campaign to be over. Hopefully the pink and green barfstorm doesn't seep into the movie's opening credits.
