Fang Vs. Fiction

I just watched the new AMC documentary. They cover a great deal of the mythology and documented cases of both werewolves and vampires. Movie clips are used with stock footage in a clever way - great editing.

Of course, I knew it was no coincidence that this doc is being aired the same week Underworld comes out. I figured there'd be plenty of Underworld footage to promote the flick.

What I didn't count on that this doc is following in the Curse of the Blair Witch tradition. After giving plenty of established folklore on vampires and werewolves (also known as lycens - heh) they go into the fabricated backstory of the Underworld movie. Everything in the documentary is presented as fact - a unique approach. So when they started telling about the animosity between the two monster clans and their warfare, it seemed plausible.

The interviews with "true" vampires and werewolf were like other brushes with the subculture I've seen on Montel or Jerry Springer. But the characters in Fang vs. Fiction are so perfect that I suspect they may be actors. The werewolf guy is really entertaining.

There are also interview segments with authors (of the Vampire Encyclopedia and the Werewolf Book) plus the British guy who was arrested for vampire hunting in the Highgate Cemetary. Cool.

Some great background for anyone who may not know all the lore. The ingenious editing and Underworld backstory make it worth watching for the rest of us.

By the way, if you don't want to see too much Underworld footage before going to the theater, hold off on watching this. There's lots of scenes teased (and possibly spoiled). But the make-up effects and cg effects look amazing.

I just posted on this in the Underworld Thread in answer to another post. Didn't see you had this up. Rather than retype, I'll just cut and paste...
If only it could have been as good as Curse of the Blair Witch. I wasn't prepared for it to be that much of a commercial for Underworld. I knew there would be clips, etc but I was expecting them just to highlight your basic "In Seach Of"/"Beyond Bizarre" kind of thing. I mean, some of those people had to be actors...or at least non-actors given stories to say in order to create this whole vampires vs werewolf "history."
And how can anyone who authored a book called "The Werewolf Book" butcher Curt Siodomak's Wolfman poem so horribly?

I'm right there with you on the actors thing. And also, if they had to make it a commercial, like you said...it was no Curse of the Blair Witch quality false/docu.

The Vampire Encyclopedia of the Undead author and Werewolf Book author were real guys. I have the vampire book, and I've drooled over the werewolf book before. Plus, my brother says he's heard one of them interviewed on Coast to Coast a few times.

The awkward paraphrasing of the poem from The Wolfman was unfortunate, but what can you do? People in real life don't always memorize poetry as flawlessly as characters in movies. It would have been nice if he looked at a cue card and said it correctly, I guess.

Of course the Blair Witch doc was superior. But this was better than some of the monster shows I've seen on TLC or Discovery. The advertising aspect was pretty blatant, but it got me interested in the movie, so I guess it did its job.

I liked seeing the clips from Bram Stoker's Dracula, Return of the Vampire, and Nosferatu, many used in unusal contexts. I think there was even some footage from I Was a Teenage Werewolf in there.

By the way, the clip of "Dracula" (Bela Lugosi) in the cemetary with a werewolf was from REturn of the Vampire, a Columbia picture. Lugosi looked like Dracula, but was portraying an undead Armand Tesla in that flick. A good underrated atmospheric horror movie, if you haven't seen it.

It didn't get under my skin like Curse of the Blair Witch... There's an art to the fake horror documentary. Still, it was good free viewing.

Sorry, but I thought this was so lame. Some of the info was interesting, but weaving history (Vlad the Impaler) in with movie plot synopsis (war of the wolves vs. vampires) was just obvious and hamfisted.

And the werewolf guy looked more like he was influenced by Wolfman Jack than the Wolf Man.

And I know it's probably been mentioned before, but since when do werewolves crawl on walls? Dracula, yes. Werewolves? No. Dracula can do it because bats can do it. I don't even know whether wolves can climb trees.

Glad it was free, or I'd be really upset. wink

Was it my imagination or didn't they right at the beginning show a quick clip of Bruce Campbell from Bubba Ho-Tep?
