The comic relief and Matthew Modine..

Yeah, worst thing about TDK especially is that it's a few cuts and several tweaks (the Joker's ending doesn't quite work) away from really being that perfect superhero film everyone hails it as.

I need to join Anonymous so that, every time some motherfucker on here brings up Batman in a non-Batman thread, I can put on my rubber Guy Fawkes mask and ask my fellow Anons to hack the fuck out of that person.

What's that? You didn't spend all of your life savings on gift vouchers for Pornhub? Go tell it to the internet police, buddy!

Speaking of which, you know who'd be a good person to call on when people break the rules? Batman.

I'm hoping they're saving the real magical weirdness for the movie, because right now it's just people waving their arms around making the world look like a kaleidoscope.

Not STRANGE enough?

Yeah, we want rabbits being pulled from top hats and Cumberbatch sawing McAdams in half!

Bruce didn't quit because he was sad about Rachel, he quit to legitimize the Dent Act.

Stop talking about Devin.

I hope this sequel is called Doctor Strange into Darkness.

Batman.  Doesn't.  Quit.

My preferred Batman doesn't. Bruce describing criminals in BvS as weeds he's been picking for 20 years is spot on, he knows it's a never-ending battle.

But if you're approaching Batman from the perspective of "ending" crime, then creating a climate of fear that's a deterrent for petty crime in The Dark Knight and then a fascistic Act that doesn't allow paroles (or something) in The Dark Knight Rises, that's the end result.

Of course the message of the series, that the ends justify the means, is ultimately disproven by the fallout in the final movie. So once you realize and accept that Nolan is arguing AGAINST Batman, then you're in for an intriguing ride.

Ergo, vis-a-vis, concordantly, that Eye of Agamotto is an Infinity Gem, right?

Most people seem to suspect it'll be the Time Gem.

Guys are in here talking about Nolan Batman like it's 2012 and having an ontological argument about how much weirdness actually qualifies as "weird" in a Marvel movie like it's 2014.

So I'm certain it's the Time Gem, and this thread has been affected by it.

Would certainly make sense if Tilda's character has been using it to, as she says in the trailer, "appear throughout time" in search of her successor.

not WEIRD enough!

Yeah if (as is likely) the Eye is just another Infinity stone I'll be disappointed. We were promised a Larger Universe damnit!

Actually, I take it back. Mads Mikkelsen's weird eyeliner/eyeshadow is weird enough....

Has it been speculated on yet if this movie is taking place at the before or after the events of Captain America: TWS? Maybe what happens in this is why Hydra wanted Dr Strange killed.

I've always assumed that the movies take place in chronological order. I can very well believe that, if Tilda Swinton's Ancient One has been searching for Doctor Strange for some time (as is suggested by the trailer), Zola's algorithm calculated that he was a figure of importance ahead of whatever occurs in the movie.

If sorcery was easy, then everyone would do it. Strange's origin story will have him stufying it at least as hard as he studied medicine. I expect the movie to start years in the past, with a lot of training montage action to cover the interval; time enough for Strange to do something that would get him on Hydra's radar.

Actually, the movies don't precisely take place in chronological order, or at least didn't early on. From my recollection, Incredible Hulk actually overlaps Iron Man 2 a bit (footage from the University Battle is on the screens at the end of Iron Man 2, and Tony's "cameo" in Incredible Hulk is supposed to take place after Iron Man 2), and obviously most of Captain America: The First Avenger precedes the other films.

Oh God.

This means I've watched them all out of their proper order!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pfff... Zola's Algorithm.

Search:

First Initial of Forename = First Initial of Surname

or

Childhood Friends of Villains

or

Orphans

Job done.

I like the visual congruity bt this mystical vfx and the quantum realm in Ant-Man

I wonder how these trailers are going to play outside of fan circles.  Is Doctor Strange going to be a little too weird for most people?  I have my Marvel sympathies, but there isn't anything about this to me so far that screams "Can't miss!"  The film looks well-shot, I love the actors, and I've always liked the character, but I'm missing the "hook" with this adaptation.

I don't bet against Marvel at this point.

IT WILL BE FIIIIIIINE!

People at my showing of Suicide Squad allllll loved the "WI-FI PASSWORD" joke at the end of the trailer!

LOVED!

Cumberbatch + Marvel = PROFIT!

Simple as that.

I'm expecting it to do similarly to the Antman, Thor, or Captain America originals. The business model calls for smaller films mixed in with the Civil Wars and such. I expect this to do 150-200 mil, and the better Cumberbatch works, the more we'll see of him going forward. Plus, he's almost certainly playing a fair-sized role in the Infinity War, so this one's almost a freebie.

That said, I think the potential greatness of this one is limited by Scott Derrickson, who I just kind of consider a weak director. As such, I expect it to lean heavily on the house style, with hopefully some trippy visuals and fun performances. I'm a fan of the character, so I hope he pops. I still kinda wish Joaquin Phoenix was doing it.
I'm definitely curious to see where this one goes, especially in light of how much creative license I see being taken with what's in the text of the comics. When it was first announced that the Ancient One was being rewritten as a Celt, I was unaware that the Human Genome Project thinks that the ancestors of the Celts migrated west from Tibet. When I look at the attention paid to Jungian archetypes by having the initiation of Strange, a male sorceror, come from a female anima figure instead of a male animus, and the replacement of the psychedelic art motifs of the 60's with the kind of fractal/mechanical imagery associated with DMT, I see an attempt to start fresh and design this character from the ground up using memes from modern New Age literature, instead of what passed for the same when Steve Ditko created the funny books incarnation of this character in the 60's. There's something here that has had a lot of forethought put into it, and it could be an interesting piece of work to chew on even if it doesn't become the next Guardians of the Galaxy.

I got to see the trailer for this in 3D. It actually felt a lot more impressive that way!

Me too. 3D for the feature itself is gonna be a must.

And a hook for this is easy...that Marvel logo and the phrase "trust us".

I am curious if this has any blatant tie-ins like going to Avengers HQ and fighting the Falcon. Could this be the first time Marvel is confident enough in their brand alone to introduce a character without Nick Fury cameos or visions of Infinity Gems?

I wonder...

I'm hoping the Hulk turns up in one scene, and Doctor Strange sneezes and accidentally teleports him to Asgard, leading into his appearance in Thor 3.

You joke, but there was a really cool storyline from the early '80s called "Crossroads" when Strange had to banish a berserker Hulk to limbo:

I won't be surprised if Thanos decides to make a grab for the Infinity Stone that is stored in Asgard in this movie. He has to begin collecting the stones, otherwise he will have to do all the collecting in the Infinity War movie.

There's a theory in the video I posted about the time gem making an appearance.

I love Cumberbatch but is he really a box office draw?

Granted, neither was Paul Rudd really.
