Suggestions for a Halloween Party?

Here's my situation. My 6th grade daughter is getting too 'cool' for the trick or treat scene and we've been discussing having a Halloween party at our home. It's a tough age to plan for though. If they were younger you can tell them a ghost story, bob for appples (does anyone even do that anymore) and watch Scooby Doo on Zombie Island. If they were older you could get into some Halloween, Ring, TCM and stuff, break into Dad's secret stash. I sincerely doubt the Univeral, or even Hammer films, could hold their attention. I would appreciate some suggestions, especially from some of you closer to my daughters age, with some titles suitable for this age (scary but not graphic). Or should I just say to hell with it and show Last House on the Left and call it a cautionary example.

Set up a haunted house. If done right, it's not expensive, you get to use your imagination, and scare the living daylight's out of snotty brats- er I mean, America's future. (oh what a give away)

My dad used to do it for church, came out really nice.

One thing though, tell teh other parents first, in todays Sue you atmosphere, it'd probably be best.

To add to the haunted house thing. A marathon that includes:

Ghostbusters
Gremlins 1&2
If you can swing it... Monster Squad.

The staple kiddie flicks.

I always thought "Something Wicked This Way Comes" (although I guess it may be more a boy's flick) and "Lady in White" are great 'young' horror.
But yeah, go with Last House on the Left. They gotta learn sometime

All of the suggestions have been great, but I'd also add Poltergeist to the list of contenders.

Good suggestions so far, thanks. Keep 'em coming. I have observed that if it's one thing a 6th grade girl wants to avoid it's 'kiddie' or anything that resembles 'kiddie' when their friends are around. (Alone with mom or dad, no problems). So I am looking for scary. I just don't want to scar anyone. Well, okay I can think of this one kid but...

Definately go with Something Wicked this way Comes and Lady in White then.

I had thought of another picture, but it seems to have dropped out of my head. Like the piece of Peter Jackson's brain in Bad taste.

Somebody hand me a chainsaw....

My kids both loved Army of Darkness. II? Tempting actually. Something Wicked sounds interesting. Polterguiest (screw spell check) is a great idea. This later lead to a little surprise under somebodys bed. It will be a sleepover after all and I am a puppeteer...

You don't necessarily have to go through the process of a big ol' scary haunted house (can't believe I just said that), but you can certainly deck the house all realy spooky-like. Creative lighting. A display of "things in a jar." Torn cheesecloth hanging from the doorway. A ghoulish environment is prime for any festivities and movie watching.

Here are a few flicks that I think wouldn't bee all too harmful for a 6th grader. I understand the whole "kiddie" thing, we were all there at one time or another!
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Poltergeist
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Pet Sematary
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Fright Night
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The Fog
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Halloween
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Buffy the Vampire Slayer - movie (6th grade girls might dig it)
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Sleepy Hollow
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Joy Ride (cute boys vs. a trucker)
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I think these are movies with content that'll make the kids feel like their watching a grown-up film - but it's pretty tame in comparison to the harder stuff.

Hey, I thought the little boy in Pet Cemetery was really freaky!

What about Jaws?

Or

Halloween III?

I'm not saying any of my suggestions are kids fare, some of those are my own personal favorites. Even ones I saw when I was a young 'un. They're still damn effective, and pretty scary, I just think they're suitable for what Bjork's lookin' for.
As I recall, Fright Night has an Amanda Bearse teat shot. Sixth grades boys might dig that...
"I saw a booby!!!"

Anyways, the best sleep over movie is Nightmare on Elm Street. Really.

I went to a haloween party when I was about that age. The father of the house setup a neat haunted house thing. He would take you in blindfolded and make you touch a bowl with something like ramen noodles, and you had to quess what it was.

It was pretty fun a gross. Afterwards I think we played tag in the middle of the night and watched movies afterwards.

It was pretty fun.

"Beatlejuice" is a good choice if you have a bunch of 'don't scare us' cats. I suppose you could toss in Beavis & Butthead's Halloween special-"Cornholio, lord of the harvest" if you got some cool ass kids in there.

Take a walk through a graveyard and tell ghost stories.

Then go home and watch
THE FOG
HALLOWEEN
SLEEPY HOLLOW (Tim Burton)
THE OMEGA MAN

LADY IN WHITE and MONSTER CLUB are excellent reccomendations btw!
How about Creepshow and some of the tamer Tales From The Crypt episodes?
If it's a party, they may not have very long attention spans. These make for some fine stories kids can walk in and out on.

I would not recommend Joy Ride, while good the first victim of the maniac is a bit shocking.
Ah, shocking but implied. You don't see much ya know.

I can't imagine a bunch of 6th grade girls would want to sit through a lot of the flicks that are being suggested. Do you want to educate the kids on classic horror films, or do you want them to have a good time? If it's the former, films from the seventies and eighties are fine. Give 'em the classics, and if they don't like Evil Dead II, tell them to screw off.

But if these 6th grade girls are like most other 6th grade girls, they would probably appreciate more modern films that pander to their demographic. Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Ring, Darkness Falls, Joy Ride, and other cheesy popcorn horror would probably be safe bets. Sure, us horror nerds look down on a lot of those flicks, but a group of young girls at a sleepover will eat 'em up. Get them something they'll enjoy instead of trying to find the classics that will terrorize them. That's my advice.

The Frighteners
Horror of Dracula
Critters
Gremlins
The Lost Boys

The Stuff and The Blob remake double feature!
How about Sleepy Hollow? Girls that age will watch anything with Johnny Depp, right?

That is a tough age. If it were boys, I'd have lots of suggestions, but girls? I guess it depends on what kind of girls they are. I know my niece has allways liked The Craft.

Uh...no they show the guy sans his lower jaw. That's not implied that's really shown.
Implied as in wrapped in bandages, though. I mean, it's not a big ol' gore-shot. It's a dude lyin' in a hospital bed. Right?

Anyhow, The Blob '88 is another great one, I think, too!

Being a girl, I have been to some sleepovers back in the day.

At the majority of these we spent the night playing light as a feather stiff as a board, Ouija hi-jinks, and bitching about our periods (now that's horror) but I do recall one evening in 5th grade where we all sat down and watched the Slumber Party Massacre series, now whether you consider those "films" horror or just horrible, they're pretty fun for the lil gals to get all screamy over.

Other fun stuff I would recommend would be:
- Deadly Friend
- Night of the Comet
- The People Under the Stairs
- Waxwork
- Return of the Living Dead (but remember that our lovely Linnea bares all, quite tastefully I might add wink )
- Night of the Demons or The Convent for something more recent
- Savini's remake of NOTLD
- Children of the Corn
- Twilight Zone the Movie
- Tales From the Darkside the Movie

Go for fun and engaging yet still somewhat tame if you're worried they might spaz.

Lady in White and Something Wicked This Way Comes are fantastic suggestions but I have a feeling that in a party atmosphere the attention span may be lower than usual and they'd lose a lot of the suspense.

I can't wait to throw parties for the kiddies! And I sincerely hope we get trick or treaters this year or there'll be Hell to pay in my neighborhood, do you think it's bad to threaten children if they don't want to come to your home and beg you for candy?

Excellent advice. Thank you everybody. Creetch suggested Waxwork. It might be a little tough for the kids (carved up leg of fiancee for dinner) but I sure as hell wouldn't mind a copy. I don't think it's DVDable yet, or is it? Can anyone tell me. I will say that, as a hopefully at least passable Dad, that I cannot knowingly show them the rough stuff yet. However, maybe I'll turn in early and make sure my DVD collection is temptingly in reach.
Waxwork 1 and 2 come out as a double feature DVD on Sept 28 according to my yahoo.
... just get some guy in a skintight Spiderman costume and no underwear to show up ...

Here's my .02: I saw The Craft mentioned up there somewhere, and I think that one's balls-on perfect! A movie for teen girls, featuring teen girls.

Also I would try to find films where the girl did the most ass-kicking. Halloween, Alien, and Scream come to mind, but the stabbings in Scream might be a little rough.

Paid in full.

I don't know but I've been watching "Texas Chainsaw", "Halloween", "Friday The 13th", etc. ever since I can remember my life (3 or so).

My suggestions-

Nightmare Before Christmas
When Good Ghouls Go Bad-This was a Fox Family movie written by R.L. Stine and starring Christopher Lloyd as a boy's lively Grandfather that suddenly dies and then comes back to life to solve some unfinished business regarding why the town refuses to celebrate Halloween. Pretty good.

There are some that aired on the Disney Channel that are worth checking out, but aren't on video yet. My favorite is "The Scream Team", a cross between "The Frighteners" and "Lethal Weapon" with Eric Idle and Tommy Davidson as mismatched ghost detectives that help two kids uncover the truth behind a local legend.

My 12 year-old sister loved CHILD'S PLAY. I just had to mention it...

I second SLEEPY HOLLOW. Young girls seem to like it, and it even takes place at Halloween.

And if they're into Buffy, it's got 2 wonderful Halloween episodes (season 2 and 4 I think).
