Attack on Titan

Anyone else watching this? I genuinely had a nightmare about the grinning giant.

Love it. I don't know how far along into the series you've gotten, and I'm afraid of spoiling anything . . . but yeah, it takes an unexpected turn or two in to something really crazy.

I wish people would provide es the some context when they start threads like this. What is it? How is it aired? Are we talking about the anime series that started 2 years ago? Give some context to people who might be interested.

The entire show's on Hulu. Since the original manga is still ongoing, the show had end at a midway point. Last I read, the show's coming back either at the end of this year or some time in 2016.

As I said in another thread about this, it's misery porn at its finest. At some point my reaction became similar to how I watch Game of Thrones: having to laugh at almost every single awful thing that happens to every character.

LOVE this series, even though I'm far from an avid follower of anime in general. The giants alone are reason enough to watch- as fascinating as they are frightening, they feel more fresh/original than any other fictional monster I've seen in at least a decade. More Goya's Colossus than Godzilla.

Very much looking forward to new episodes.

I think I need to keep clear of my own thread as Im only four episodes in.

I'm a bit of an Anime novice. I've seen Akira and Ghost in the Shell but not much else, but this world feels so rich and weird and, well, Japanese. It's remarkable.

Also the Titans terrify me on a totally primal level. I can barely watch them. That there is (so far) no explanation for them is horrifing.

This thread is giving me unpleasant flashbacks.  The Titans have the most terrifying faces.  I watched about the first half of the series, and I still imagine those bastards whenever I hear or read the word "titan."

There are some deaths on this show that literally made me feel ill, which hasn't happened anywhere else.

The smiling ones are the freakiest. Although there was one with a neatly trimmed Selleck mustache that actually took me out because I was laughing so hard. These things are brilliantly surreal.

I actively avoid anime because it doesn't do anything for me, and I find everything but Miyazaki grating. But, everyone won't stop talking about this, so I caved and gave a couple of episodes a shot on Netflix.

I'm kind of digging it. I like the pseudo-medieval setting, the absurdity of the onmi-directional gear, and the surrealistic horror of the titans themselves. I hate how every chararacter in anime has to shout everything in shrill tones and make gutteral noises when they're not talking, but the story and setting make my issue with anime tolerable. I'm about 20 episodes in, and I hope the story doesn't jump the shark before the end.

That's just anime in general. So yeah, something you have to get used to.

Have you ever watched Cowboy Bebop? One of those anime that really do a good job of eschewing a lot of those anime tropes.

I'm about halfway through it and it's absolutely bugnuts.  Everything about the Titans is terrifying and they are some of the most original monsters created in years.

Definitely need to finish this, but it is kinda annoying how every decision made by characters are agonized over and over and over.  I mean I get the world is ending, but sheesh, you don't have to be so hyper-critical about yourself.  I'm looking at you Armin and Eren.

It's the equivalent of Dragon Ball's characters "charging up" and screaming at each other for a whole episode. Another thing I hate about Anime - how much blatant filler there is - but I'm overlooking because I'm enjoying it so much.

When does season 2 come out?

Or the endless loops of the same punch kick sequence.  Another DBZ hallmark

So apparently there's a live-action movie coming out?

So like D.T. I finally gave in and agreed to watch this based on being told in as many words that if I don't watch this I'm not allowed to talk about movies anymore.  I'm 14 episodes in and this may be the most gonzo thing I've ever seen.  Anime is not my gig, I feel like it's telanovela soap opera set to cool visuals, and AOT definitely is guilty of the over-the-top emotion milking that makes my eyes roll..... BUT.... the story is batshit nuts enough that it's bringing me along.  The Titans are absolutely terrifying on a primal level.  The grinning, lobotimized glee with which they chomp through people is some H.R. Giger level of disturbing shit.  Like, no watching past 10PM has become a rule.

No way my wife will agree to watch this with me when I get home.

I'm really wanting to read the manga too continue with the story, but I absolutely refuse to start reading shit from right to left.  I know it sounds stupid.  I don't care.

I did see on IMDB that there are a couple of OVA's.  Anyone have any idea if these are available in the US?

The Titans themselves are perhaps the most intriguing thing about the show. They're horrifyingly creepy and the fact that they...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
...aren't capable of digesting the people they eat is even more unnerving. They don't kill and eat people to survive -- they're just beings of pure destruction and brutality.

It's creepy as shit. I could still do with less screaming and shrill voices, but it has me pretty well hooked.

Of all the animes that could actually get a thread going, I wouldn't have guessed Attack on Titan.  I kinda floundered and stopped watching around episode three or so, mostly because of the shrill WE CAN DO IT teen melodrama - unlike the stuff in Evangelion, it doesn't seem to be satire.  Kinda like the new Fujiko-centered Lupin series on Hulu, my problem with AoT is it seems high on style, low on substance - case in point is the JJ mystery-box nature of the Titans themselves.  I'll give it another shot I guess - I'm starting to read manga on my iPad, so this might be a good back-burner title after I finish reading all 14 volumes of Evangelion and 36 volumes of Berserk.

I mentioned it in the Netflix thread, but Berserk really is a good Game of Thrones type anime.  It gives monsters and magic a bit more emphasis than on GOT, and the political scheming is less sophisticated, but I consider it a bit less over-the-top than AoT, even if the hero does scream a lot when he's cutting dudes in half.

The funny thing is that that same WE CAN DO IT teen melodrama is almost immediately subverted in the following episodes when they get fucking decimated by the Titans.

Season 2 is only coming out next year which blows but as someone who's really grown out of anime in recent years there is something special in AoT that just tickles my fancy.

And the theme songs are AWESOME.

Yeah, though I'm REALLY partial to the original song; the second one just doesn't have that "Sie sind das Essen und Wir sind die Jaeger!" hook at the beginning.

And the melodrama (which is still kind of grating, but more for pacing reasons than anything) comes off less "We Can Do It!" and more "Why would anyone trust me to do this? I can't do this.  I'm weak."  Which starts off endearing, but by 2/3 of the season I'm basically yelling at the TV at this point saying "DUDE.  You've killed like 5 of these things by now and out-survived about 20 people you knew.  Have some confidence, man!"

The worst part for me is it's just dawning on me there's no freakin way we're going to get any real answers about what the Titans really are, who/what made them and why, why Eren can do what he does, basically every mystery in the show is going to still be there at the end of Season 1, and probably Season 2 since it looks like the Manga still hasn't answered any of those things either, really.

I will say that the writers could hold a masterclass (that Damon Lindelof should attend) on how to escalate and deepen a mystery without going off the rails.  Every revelation so far has played like a legitimate ratcheting up of the stakes, and I've seen exactly zero of them coming.  Most properties are lucky to surprise you once, this show's done it at least 4 times by now.

Color me interested, though based on that trailer I'm a bit wary of the lack of color.  And I can't imagine the sheer scale and number of the ODG scenes being shot for under $100mil, so if they can convincingly pull that off it'll be way more impressive to me than a few CG giants.

The distinctive colors/uniforms of the various regimens is also important, so hope the costume design comes through.  A multi-ethnic cast would have been nice since these are supposed to be the last remnants of all of humanity, but in addition to verbally stating that Mikasa is the only person of asian ancestry in their regimen, there's certainly a difficult to ignore lack of darker skinned people within the city in the anime.

Man, I really want someone at WB to pull a Blomkamp-Alien on the Matrix series and give us the Part 3 where Zion turns out to be just the outer layer of the Matrix.  That was a proper 'last dregs of humanity' lookin place.

That's basically Shinji in the entirety of Evangelion.

Oh my god do HATE, ney LOATHE, Shinji. I hate him so much that it made me hate Evangelion. He's the worst main character I think I've ever seen on an anime. All emo and no character growth for the entire fucking series. I'm trying to watch the recent redo movies but so far, he's still unlikeable through the first movie.

Reading the entire manga to my 4 month old and, yeah, he is a miserable little fuck, isn't he?

In the second movie he gets much, much better. The movie makes it a point to show that Shinji isn't the same spinless ass he is in the series.

I'm addicted to this series, I've had a sudden interest to start watching some of these anime shows, and this one is really well done.

Anybody watching Season 2 yet?

Haven't gotten on to Season 2 yet, but if you're looking for some GOOD anime; One Punch Man, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are well worth your time.

It started recording last weekend. I've only seen the first few minutes of the first episode . . . was I half asleep, or is there now a Bigfoot titan?
Didn't realize S2 was available, will have to check that out soon.

Another anime horror reco that would fit nicely in this thread is Parasyte: The Maxim. Turing turned me on to that one a while back and I enjoyed it a lot. It's great and weird AF. Might still be available on Hulu. Has anyone seen Tokyo Ghoul?
I was actually thinking to inform you a few weeks ago when I saw something about Titan on CN. Bummer, sorry.

My son is way into Tokyo Ghoul right now. I . . . am not. Parasite hit almost all my geek buttons at once, same with Titan, but Ghoul leaves me cold.

Yes, although at this point he's still pretty mysterious. This is  a shorter season (12) and we're at episode 6.

I hope you guys catch up, episode 6 or season 2 was released yesterday ... and oh boy is it awesome. It delivers on a lot of emotional buildup from the very beginning of this series, very well done! (sorry being cryptic about it, but extremely spoilery to get into any details).

I saw One Punch Man on Netflix (that's how I sort of got started on watching some anime), really enjoyed that. I'm also watching Death Note right now, although season 1 is at the point for me that it just seems like it's dragging its feet.

Anybody watching? I think there's only 2 episodes left to this season?

Can't get into the show just because I've read all of the manga up to the most recent chapter. The manga is WAY ahead of the show and so knowing how everything is going to turn out, but that the show also just ends this season within a few more episodes with no resolution kills it for me.

Tokyo Ghoul season 1 was great, but I didn't care much for season 2. Death Note didn't really hold my interest.

Season 2 is done (only 12 episodes) but yesterday as they released the last episode of the season, they announced season 3 will be out next year! So no crazy 4 year wait like last time, great news.

BTW the season finale was amazing!

Finished season 2. The titans might be even more horrifying than in season 1 (those end credits, man... truly the stuff of nightmares). The second episode with Sasha and the girl in that deserted village was incredibly tense. Have to say, the plot kinda started to lose me towards the end, but overall a pretty good season.

PS what in the holy living fuck is Attack on Titan: Junior High?

A comedy spin off.

Basically the same cast, but in high school and its a wacky comedy (the titans dont eat people, they are sorta bullies that eat everyone's lunch?)

It takes the piss out of the main series, pokes fun at it and so on.

That's all I know. never been a fan of AOT at all.

Well, good luck with that.  I hope you both enjoy it, it is, indeed, totally bananas!  You should know if it's you bag by the end of the first episode, if I remember correctly.

Does the second season move as slowly and have as much screaming as the first?

Well, it's anime so there's a fair amount of screaming...it moves fairly quickly (it's a really short season) but it raises waaaaay more questions than it answers.  That said, I still enjoyed it and will watch a third season, if it ever appears.

Agreed on it raising more questions than it answers.

Going back to this for a second, as someone who watches a shit ton of horror I have to say this sequence really stayed with me.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The mini titan slowly feasting on the still alive and in pain mother as her frozen daughter can only watch

...was easily one of the most fucked up things I've seen in a while. The way they wrapped that part of the story up was really satisfying, too. Sometimes the screaming just works.

Has there ever been a thread for anime, in general on these forums?  I don't remember seeing one and I'm a huge fan of anime (more correctly, my daughters are huge fans of anime so I started having to vet them to avoid any super-wonky stuff for wandering into their viewing) and I kinda get the feeling anime ain't real popular, round these parts.

Start one! I'll happily chime in on the ones that I've seen. CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO, anyone?

There have been threads about specific shows, but not one about anime in general.

Im a huge fan, but my taste is extremely varied and weird; I just finished Little Witch Aacademia (loved it, perfect for watching with kids, specially girls), currently watching Tsuredure Children (probably one of the funniest, most realistic takes on teen romance ive seen in anime), Gamers! (fun rom-com).

Overall, I'd say that the best shows ive seen in the last few years were Kill La Kill and Blood Blockade Battlefront.

I watched as it aired...not sure about Amazon.  It's worth a watch but don't expect much in the way of mysteries being solved...just new mysteries.
