This post, alongside your avatar, is just....perfect.

If they don't want Matt to be a lawyer, that's fine - but I think it's the wrong move to throw away that history of the character.

Matt's disillusionment with the legal system is a major part of the arc of Season 2 though. Everything from the rooftop conversation with Castle, discovering that the only reason Frank became The Punisher was because the DA put her sting operation above the safety of any civilians, to discovering that his one genuine legal victory was ultimately hollow because Wilson Fisk had managed to take over his own prison and was rebuilding his criminal empire from the inside were pushing him away from the law.

I'm willing to bet that a major component of Season 3 will be Matt moving back towards lawyering.

Anyone who has been a lawyer knows that soul-sucking disillusionment and despair for the state of your profession is simply par for the course.  And I'm not joking.

Each and every one of Matt's arcs in Season 2.0 is absolutely destroyed the moment when he goes to Castle and says something like: "we'll do it your way, just this once."  No.  Vigilante murder is a line you can't cross and come back from.  All of the dialogue and sparring between him and Castle, all of his efforts to NOT kill, all of the sermonizing, they are undone in that one second and I was left shaking my head at the screen.  The writers fucked that up.  They fucked it up big time.  In season 3, they better address it.  Maybe something like: "Thank you Frank for turning down my offer.  You don't know how close I came to betraying everything I believed in."  What's even worse is that Castle gets it while Murdock does not, and responds appropriately

This Batman scene actually has a very similar moment, and Batman's explanation also points everything that is wrong with that scene from Daredevil.

Now, I'm not saying they can't go that direction with the character.  In fact, after season 2, I might like it.  You just can't have it both ways.  There is a line.  If your character is going to spend 19 episodes staying on one side of it and you make it a linchpin of his character, in the 20th it better be handled perfectly if he's now going to cross it.

Daredevil did kill a guy though. They tried to wipe it away on a technicality but he threw a guy off the roof to kill him. He also allowed Frank to mow down a bunch of them with a machine gun. So come on I want Murder Devil.

Also that hard moral stance never really works. Stix said "sooner or later you will be backed into a corner where it's kill or be killed" and that's true. No matter how hard he fights he will be in a situation where he has to kill someone. And here is where it gets real tricky, what happens if he had to kill to save someone else? So far that have tried their hardest to dodge all of this having Matt always find a way. But there isn't always a way.

That was not, in my opinion, the way to handle that scene.

Yeah, but what separates Matt Murdock from other lawyers is that he has superpowers and is already putting on a costume and going out and beating up people. The foundation of his character is that he's already decided that the law isn't quite enough. So further undermining the legitimacy of the Law in his eyes just flips him from 'sometimes we have to go slightly outside the law for the sake of justice' to 'why bother with the law at all now?'

If the Season 3 arc brings him back from that (which it clearly should), I think that's actually some decent writing and character work.

Yeah so if these ninja guys were already dead, it isnt morally wrong for Daredevil to kill them right?

I had that in the back of my mind as I watched.

TECHNICALITY! But remember there was the scene where Dawson felt bad about klling one of them.

Coming back I hope. Liked this the best out of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage
post #2264 of 2279

I thought Jessica Jones was the best overall, but Daredevil has the highest highs.  Some of those action sequences are as good as any superhero movie has ever given us.

On the topic of killing, Season 2's biggest problem is that it tries to have its cake and eat it too by having Stick and Castle kill people so that Murdock won't have to in the end. It's like watching the writers struggle to figure out for themselves how they feel about the morality of sniping bad guys from a rooftop across the street.

So, yeah, I guess it's a faithful adaptation of Frank Miller after all. So it's got that going for it, I suppose.

and then bringing out already dead people to kill and not feel bad.

For those interested, Season 2 is now available on blu. I don't expect it to be available for long, and I know most folks won't see the sense in owning something that's (presumably) always available via the streaming service.

But just in case.

(Mine arrives tomorrow; not only do I prefer not being completely dependent on a 'net connection to watch, my Netflix feed pixelates the backgrounds in most shots like you wouldn't believe. I prefer doing rewatches on disc because the image is higher quality than via streaming.)

R1? I can't find any sign of it anywhere. And why the hell hasn't Jessica Jones gotten a blu-ray yet?

I was only able to find an all regions one on Amazon for 70 bucks! Yeah, not worth it until it comes down drastically.

Jessica Jones is on blu:

https://www.amazon.com/Marvels-Jessica-Jones-Complete-Season/dp/B01LXDYRYO/ref=pd_sim_74_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01LXDYRYO&pd_rd_r=1CP7B940H541XJ16SX4A&pd_rd_w=JyLu7&pd_rd_wg=m4QLY&psc=1&refRID=1CP7B940H541XJ16SX4A

I ordered the region free version, because it's available. Netflix seems really, really reluctant to release their shows on physical media. S1 wasn't available for very long, so I thought I'd grab this while I can.

Will this play on my R1 blu ray player?

I don't count the UK releases. Yeah, they're All Region, but, eh. And you can always just order them from amazon.co.uk.

Daredevil Season 1 got an R1 release, the others must be coming. I just can't figure out the timing. S1 landed last November, ~18 months after the Netflix release, so I figured the same delay for the other series. Which should put Jessica Jones sometime this month, but there's been no announcement that I can find. And blu-ray.com isn't the resource it used to be since they get all their dates from Amazon, and Amazon is in some weird fight with Disney/Buena Vista Home Entertainment, so doesn't list their new releases any more.

It showed up on Amazon U.S. version for me. Because I Am Dumb, I didn't even notice it wasn't R1 only.

As long as it plays, I'm fine. And I'm fine paying a little more, simply because it means I have it and don't have to keep looking for it.

It's on Amazon, but it's not sold by Amazon. I've become increasingly wary of anything that shows up like that. Even when it's Sold by X and Fulfilled By Amazon.

Like I said: I Am Dumb.

It's supposed to arrive tomorrow, though. We'll see how it goes.

Well duh.

I kid, I kid. D'Onofrio back and the ending of the Defenders hint at a "Born Again" adaptation...which would be amazing.

No more Hand.  Thank Cthulhu.  Kingpin and Punisher were best thing about S2 of Daredevil.

You think we're done with the hand... Elektra is still around, 'Lord.

I'm with you. I'm fucking over it. They ruined it with Iron Fist and shat all over it with The Defenders. But we're not done with that garbage yet.
