The month of August has been deemed "Smaugust" so for my break from working, I sketched out a Smaug.

Now I have a sudden urge to watch Halt and Catch Fire.

Good God that good. Love the circuit design in the background.

Thanks!

*Non art related, but something I'm proud of. Tonight, I'm officially less than 100lbs away from a 300lb deadlift. After a month of training, I pulled 200x1x1. Felt great. So happy to be back into training!

Today, I'm going to get off the couch and leave the house for the first time in days.

Even if it is just to get a dentist's appointment.

Well, we all have to start somewhere.

One of my favorite painters is Jeremy Mann.  I love his style - very gooey, gritty and each stroke has an immense amount of confidence and flair. Very much a style I would love to capture in digital.  Just look at this stuff:

Well, a Fb friend alerted me about a documentary that was made about Jeremy Mann. I bought and downloaded it. I've yet to watch it. I wanted to post about it existing here, first. Its just $5, too. Here's the link:

Don't Come Knocking - "A Solitary Mann" - Documentary about Jeremy Mann

Okay, NOW I can watch this!

More seriously now (and some more detail), after a lifetime of a very fast metabolism, my weight is currently sitting at about 78kg, which is well up from my starting university weight of 62kg a few ... decades ago. I am just over 5'10" (but a real 5'10" from several medical physicals, not an Internet dating profile 5'10") and that's apparently a mid-range normal weight but then the other thing was that my blood pressure is about 110/70. Back in the day, it was 90/60. Low versus average to be sure but actually even better for your health than the average for the population.

So with a blood pressure creeping upwards and a weight sitting stubbornly at about 78kg; to add, I don't eat any confectionery, added sugar, soft drinks, desserts, sweets, hidden sugar content in things you wouldn't expect (yes, I read labels) and even dodge the trap of fruit juice; that plus my blood pressure I've realised much to my horror that I've turned into a Normal.

Now the one thing that has fallen by the wayside is the physical activity component. I don't own a car and I walk everywhere possible so it's not like I'm inert but not that long ago, I used to run 50km a week. So the plan is to after I get some stuff out of the way on the 11th and 12th of this month, I'm throwing myself right back into some serious (but sensibly increasing, no point injuring myself).

The other part is, to ruthless cut as much salt out of my diet as possible. I don't add it to food but there's still so much lurking in places you may not think of (again, labels).

We only really need about 1g in our diet a day but a lot of us consume 10g or even over. So between cutting right back on that an exercise, you can, in theory, drop your blood pressure by up to 20 points or more but realistically, I'm aiming for 10 by the time of my next doctor's appointment in January 2017 or thereabouts.

I'm aiming for getting back to a weight of 60-62kg but with the one thing I've never had before, the added 8-10kg of muscle to make a total of 70kg. We lose muscle mass as we age if we don't do anything substantial about it and I've always had so little as it is.

I know better than to crash diet or anything like that. This is going to be a very gradual and sustained process over months and then years with no expected quick fixes or results.

There, now that I've written it down in public, I *have* to do it and no excuses until it's done.

I provided them two options. Because I ended up sending them a flipped version, realized my mistake, thought, "what the hell, either would work" and sent them the other option.

Um...big project with Heavy Metal magazine. I just got off the phone with the CO. Its sequential work but with an iconic character and OH MY GOD.

Next week, I get a few script pages and do some samples. In other words, I need to practice this weekend!

I NEED to calm the shit down. I'm going to meditate for a moment and continue on painting. That should help.

Then I need to go drive to a far away high place and scream my head off.

Smug's bodybuilding background gave her the ability to grab the brass ring with both hands (it's attached to a kettle bell)!

Also of note:  Heavy Metal issue #282 went to press yesterday. That's my cover, the other runner up and the winning design art. So, next week, you'll be finding that issue available online and in stores.

FYI!!!

I also get 20 copies with my cover art. And one of each of the other two.  My free subscription begins with this issue. SO EXCITED!

That is amazing Smug! I'm so happy for you!  HEAVY METAL is a fantastic magazine and you're a great artist so it's perfect combination in my opinion.

It's the good kind of weird. The BEST kind of weird!

Then you're going to Iceland! You are still going to Iceland right?

Congrats on all of your recent success, SB!

Incidentally, I told someone not to be a smugbug recently (which they chuckled at) and so your CHUD name is now a part of my daily lexicon.

In other news, this last week, all my lifts have gone up by at least 10lbs and last night, pulled 200x4 in the deadlift. Added a 205x1 for kicks and giggles. The 300lb deadlift goal moves ever closer.
