Smugbug Art - Page 16

Booked! From tomorrow on through the week.  Sweet, but I still haven't been paid for the previous gigs.  Hmmmmmm.....

And I'm being courted by fitness coaches who want to coach me. And supplement companies who want me to endorse their products - but a few are a bit...untrustworthy. The fitness coaches take a bit more with talking with them over the phone and emails, but the supplements/active wear companies are VERY EASY to figure out.  So blah.

Also: next week - I'm going to learn how to rock climb! Or see if its ANOTHER thing I can do.

Hate that it happens, but when I have pending projects on top of getting booked for other projects, I have very little time to do art. Rather, my own art. A lot of the projects I'm on or have done, I sign NDA (non disclosure agreements), so I can't share.

However, this is October and that means, its INKTOBER. This is going to be my most ambitious INKTOBER ever. My prompts are horror movies and I created a list. I may do certain actors again just cuz. Like Barbara Steele who is SO FUN TO DRAW.

Working on toned paper with: graphite, white charcoal and color pencil, gouache (white), and three different types of brush pens (black, of course) and a black ballpoint pen.

First three....

Next up: Suspiria, Audition, The Ruins, Manitou, Dog Soldiers....

Every so often, I check the LA Craigslist to see what, if any, listings for Storyboard Artist there are. And then I see an ad like this:

Quote:
We are a high-level and experienced independent film/tv production group gearing up to shoot a short film as a shopping example of our prestige network-level episodic television series.

We are seeking a talented storyboard artist/illustrator interested in working with our group at this early, but critical stage of our project. Our script is done, and is based on a larger project, which is an episodic television series. Our goal is to shoot our short film - 20 - 25 - minutes as a keenly representative example of our project to present to high-level network/cable/streaming execs. Our group has Los Angeles/Hollywood agents, contacts and representatives.

We have a killer website and awesome marketing materials and are also gearing up for a casting shortly.

If interested, please reply with online resume/portfolio/samples of work - from black and white sketches to colorized storyboard plates, your skills, talents, and willingness to work with us helps build our film community and move this project forward.

THIS IS AN ASAP SITUATION/OPPORTUNITY -- THANK YOU...

Glance over to the right of the ad?  "NO PAY"

Uh huh. Good luck with that, folks.

LOL. You know, if they'd just present with THAT, I'd be slightly interested due to the honesty.  Nah, not really. No interest, just props to them if they were honest.

This is why I just draw my own storyboards. I can't afford to pay anyone. They're cheap AND lazy.

I think its the "Hollywood Effect", they think that by being here:

1. There's all this talent here willing to work for NOTHING just to get the infamous, illustrious "experience" and "exposure".  And you know what? There probably is. Which is unfortunate.

2. That just because they have limited experience working "in the biz", and have an idea for a show, that THIS WILL BE IT. THE ONE. And that by forming a group around this (probably) crappy idea and even, naming their group, THEY ARE PROFESSIONALS. Therefore, ANYONE would want to work with them FOR FREE.

Fuck 'em.

No matter the industry, that shit (WORK FOR EXPOSURE!!) needs to end.

So, had a meeting this morning with an agency, for a project (booked but not through any of my reps. I was recommended). And they're a block away from a DONUT joint that I had to try.

Latte - kinda weak. I like my lattes not so much "milk and milk foam w/coffee" but "coffee w/milk and milk foam", if ya get my meaning.

The donuts:  Maple Pig. Maple donut with bacon. Like glorious chunks of bacon.

Andreatta. Chocolate topped with MORE chocolate...and MORE chocolate on top of that.

Donuts were not bad. Were they worth $2.00 or more? Hmmm...There's a place at the Farmers Market in The Grove. Bob's Coffee and Donuts. Now THAT place has kick ass donuts and for less than $2.00.

I was told I need to check out Voodoo Donut in Universal City.  There's also, down the way from me in Burbank two different donut places. Doughnut Hut and Donut Prince. I need to try these out, too.

I have no idea why there's so many donut shops in LA, but there's one on every corner. Its crazy!

Smug: if you make it out here to MN, I'm taking you to Yo Yo Donuts to have one of these:

It's so good that it'll change your outlook on life.

That looks like the maple bar I would get from an awesome donut shop near me in Oregon. Man, that was an awesome donut shop.

Meanwhile, as I was researching for a current project I'm on, I find this beauty. Art by Frank McCarthy. I've decided I aspire to be a mix of Frank McCarthy and Richard Amsel. Period. End of discussion.

Art Dump. Beware!

Also: Someone just sent me a FB message that they've tried to call me. I think my phone is kaput. Won't know until I go to an AT&T later today or tomorrow - I just have SO MUCH work I have to focus on.

Heh, now I know why my phone has been eerily silent (no texts, either) save for the messages via IG and FB.

Until then, been pushing out inked work on top of digital sketches and sequential work. This all on top of training is making me exhausted.

My 11-1-2017 Self-Portrait.

A variety of work.  More 2017 Inktober. A 14x17 bristol board piece of a gnarly tree.  A few inked sketchbook studies. And a digital study of Benji Cumberbums as Doctor Strange.

A "group shot" of a few of the pieces.  The Santi/Devil's Backbone piece has sold.

This piece v of the tattoo'd gal, has sold.

Not your fault!   Heh.  I maybe should stop carrying it when I go sprinting. Or find some secure way of carrying it while I sprint. I'm really hard on my phones.

But think of all the exposure you'll be paid in!   Tons and tons of exposure!  Which you can then trade for rent or delicious Chick Fil A sandwiches.

Great art, by the way.

I didn't pay myself to draw my own storyboards, and I got what I paid for.

I have redone my website and the result is: I've been booked for one and am up for another. I also picked up a freelance storyboarding gig this past Sunday.  Fantastic timing as yes, I can certainly use the $! And to stay busy. While I'm working away on freelance gigs/commissions, I enjoy the formality that comes from being "booked" by the agencies that rep me.

If I can maintain the combination of being booked and commissions - that would be FANTASTIC.

Also, I'm becoming well known by my professional name; which is what is noted on my website.

O M G!

Just received the reference files and lowdown of this one sketch art gig and MAN OH MAN, I'm very excited about this one. Wish I could talk about it, but NDA and all that. Mums the word until its release (which could or could not be a Netflix series) this coming October.

I've been sick. Yesterday felt as if I was getting better, but today I feel worse. Meanwhile, playing catch up and also, creating MORE samples since its been over two and half weeks since my last booking.  This waiting in between gigs is making me crazy and now I'm going to see what in-house gigs are available. Specifically as a sketch/key artist.

One sample created and also, in-process is this:

Since this is digital, it kinda already is. I think I'm going to do standalones of all three of the polaroids.
