It's fine.

This seems pretty accurate. BR is visually a masterpiece but in many other ways it is a mess, albeit a fascinating, compelling one (to discuss, anyway; I still find the film itself pretty snoozy, visual excepted).

I've always felt it a wonderful movie to fall asleep to!

And then dream of electric sheep?

No, just Philip K Dick whispering in my ear.

Unicorns.

Someone on io9 said Bautista's character looks like buff Steve Jobs and now it's all I can see:

Is that a real poster?

If so, that's fucking terrible.

I just don't understand who is hired in these marketing places to get how that even came to be.
That seriously looks like a bad Photoshop.

I don't think it looks like a bad Photoshop. I'm 99% confident it is a bad Photoshop.

It's kind of crazy to me how poorly the marketing approach/pre-release imagery has been handled for the follow-up to one of the greatest aesthetic achievements in sci-fi cinema, a follow-up from a director hot off the likes of Sicario and Arrival.

The style to the sell of 2049 is sorely, sorely lacking.

Tell me people didn't seriously get paid actual money for these.

It's important to remember that Villeneuve has zero to do with the marketing. He simply doesn't have that kind of pull.

Looks like the masterminds behind our favorite Entertainment Weekly layouts have changed allegiances to the studio marketing side.

I'm confused by that 1% of doubt.

He also shouldn't have the pull to make a 2 hour and 43 minute action thriller that cost $200M plus marketing, but he does.  He's very well respected, I'm sure he's had some kind of input on the marketing.  Not to say he chose those specific posters, but I'm sure he was consulted.

I actually don't have a problem with those posters, they sell the movie and have a decent concept/style (though the Ford one looks awkward).  This is bad:

Where the heads literally look like they were copy/pasted onto the bodies.

I remember that poster. Seeing it here is nothing compared to seeing it close up.

The fucking worst!

I was hoping that it was a fan-made poster rather than something commissioned and approved by an actual studio marketing department.

That HAT!

That poster reminds me, what's Hayden Christensen up to nowadays?

Doing paycheck roles with Bruno.

Being rich and going to bed with Rachel Bilson every night.

Ha. Top billed Matt Dillon? Not in that poster.

An agency got paid. And some overworked designer with a Bachelor's, living in a studio apartment in LA, earning $38k a year was underpaid to do it while someone with no eye for design dictated it, then had it redesigned multiple times based on feedback from a committee who also have no eye for design.
You can tell mostly because the orange and teal is such an incredible afterthought despite being such cliche thing.
And there's D.T. reliably bringing the insider poop, because he knows his shit.

Anyway holy cripes those posters are bad.

Are all the characters in the posters supposed to be standing on the same roof together?

D.T.'s Stories from the Trenches.

Just curious but are they using any of the Vangelis music from the first film?

If there weren't already so many designers who've written blogs and books to vent about their jobs, I would be on that shit super fast.

Instead, I have you guys and the work thread.

Poster quality is so low down on the totem pole of importance that I don't know why I have the following gripe. And that gripe is....it drives me NUTS...when a major motion picture never even bothers with having a "final" theatrical one sheet. One or two "teaser" posters and then a HORRIBLE DVD cover. The two examples that spring immediately to mind are X-Men 2 and 3. Especially 3..
Well, just about everything about X3 is horrible so, [shrugs].
Yeah, in the end it mattered less because the film itself was such a loss but I remember being kinda blown away because it had that one lame, obvious teaser poster. The one with Wolverine's hand and claws. And then, as far as I know, never another one..

Its doubly infuriating because there are soooo many illustrators that I follow on Twitter that are unbelievably talented and have such amazing and easily-accessible styles who would kill for and absolutely crush these gigs and would create unique and icon posters for the ages, and who as kids first picked up a pencil because of the originals of these movies that they saw at an early age.

I think Ford will show up for this one.

Also, after re-watching the (last?) trailer, I'm more positive than ever that Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Leto's GMO food makes people (or more likely their babies) into Replicants. His line about "Replicants are the future... but I can only make so many" just makes a ton more sense if I'm right. If so, I dig it.

Do they know Hollywood doesn't hire artists anymore?

Even if you are right, and I'm borderline about whether that is dumber than a box of rocks, I am looking forward to the explanation of how

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
eating magic food makes robot babies. Isn't it more likely that the GMO food was a response to an environmental crisis and the declining human population is increasingly reliant on robots? I mean, it's more prosaic, but still, magic food? You think?

I only think that's the direction they're going because they explicitly made the new Tyrell a manufacturer of Replicants AND the only food source on Earth, per their handy timeline.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Add to that every trailer is playing up some mystery about the future of the human race, the almost required "Who is a Replicant and who isn't?" angle from the first film they'll want a new approach to, the unanswered question about what IS the difference between humans and Replicants anyway, plus the "I can only build so many..." line.... and yeah I think that's exactly where they're going.

If Replicants are just cloned humans with a few gene tweaks for strength/longevity, then yeah GMO foods of the future could add a few methyl groups here or there and "turn" a person into a Replicant. The point there being that Replicants were really human slave labor all along, which is totally in keeping with the original.

“Like many fans, I remember the Johnnie Walker bottle from the first film, so it was a unique privilege to collaborate with Johnnie Walker on designing a totally original, custom bottle for the new movie.”

jeebus...those posters.  WTF ?

I want to punch whomever at the studio signed off on those*.

At the VERY FUCKING LEAST.....maybe take a look at the Mondo website?

Or how about Googling - "cool movie posters"?

*most likely the father of the teenager that made them in PS.

What if the film doesn't actually take place in 2049, but much much later? What if man and machine have long since merged to survive environmental degradation? What if everyone is a replicant? What if that truth got out?
