X-COM 2 Thread

Thread Starter

Coming in November.  Let's get this sucker rolling.

From Reddit:

Quote:

In XCOM 2, the roles have been reversed, and XCOM is now the invading force. They are hampered by limited resources and must constantly evade the alien threat in their new mobile headquarters. Players must use a combination of firepower and stealth-like tactics to help XCOM recruit soldiers and build a resistance network, while attempting to expose the evil alien agenda and save humanity. XCOM 2 will introduce gameplay features such as procedurally-generated levels, which will make each experience unique to the player, as well as offer a much deeper level of modding support. Additionally, XCOM 2 will offer a variety of new content including five updated soldier classes, increased soldier customization, more alien and enemy types, evolved tactical combat and more.

I was late to the X-COM party but honestly it's one of the absolute best games I've played in years.  With so much depth and an absolutely engrossing turn-based combat system it just hit all my buttons.

And everything seen so far about this sequel just pushes even more of my buttons.  Operating a Guerilla Resistance Force from my flying Sky-Fortress of Awesomness?  Why yes, I would like that.  Thanks, Firaxis.

Well this just made my day!

Procedurally generated levels are a great step in the right direction (something the original had but new one lacked).

Although it wasn't as deep as the originals, I still loved the new one & expansion. (except the chrysallids, new ones weren't a touch on the original)

Kudos for the Snakemen Boogaloo subtitle, if it's not that when it comes out I'm gonna be disappointed now!

PC only makes me sad, but oh well.

Still, that f-cking Snakeman! It definitely brought nightmares back from the original games, and I love the idea of playing in a conquered Earth as a guerrilla force; X-Com was already tense and suspenful with a fully budgeted and supported organization.

Playing the underdog will make it even more tense and nightmarish.

Exclusives are bullshit at the best of times.  But, as someone who's missed out on a bunch of console exclusives he'd love to try (Bloodborne, Uncharted, The Last of Us etc.), excuse me if I'm not too broken up about it.

Besides, Firaxis aren't in the habit of making Crysis-level Rig Busters so it's unlikely you'll need a top of the line machine to run it.

Here are some in-game screen grabs for us to ogle.  I expect we'll have more info and gameplay footage when E3 rolls around.

Besides the Snakemen I'm digging the Sectoid/Human hybrids.  Those must be what all those abductions and experiments were trying to achieve.

Other things I'd like to see:  Grizzled battle-hardened Bradford, Mad Scientist Dr. Vahlen and Dr. Shen's floating head mounted on a SHIV.

I bought/preordered it for Xbox 360, then bought Enemy Within when i switched to a PS3.

I have no regrets, and even if it runs at minimun on my PC, I'll get this.

INFO DUMP!

http://za.ign.com/xcom-2/91209/feature/xcom-2-welcoming-our-new-alien-overlords

Some key points.

- Classes seem to be more or less the same with some changes seemingly inspired by The Long War.  Snipers are now called Sharpshooters and can specialize in using pistols.   Heavies are now Grenadiers, Assaults are now Rangers (guys with swords) and Supports are now known as Specialists (guy with the Gremlin Drone).  Also, there is a fifth       mystery class yet to be revealed.

- Customisation is greatly improved.  Individual body parts can now be changed and Veterans will unlock unique customisation options.

- Combat now gives you the option of using stealth and waypoints to get your team into an optimal position for an ambush before opening up on those pesky X-Ray's.  This         seems to allow you to get the jump on enemies before they do their bullshit 'scamper' moves.

- Missions will now have multiple ways to be completed.  No need to kill all the enemies to get a win.

- Operatives will have a backpack to store looted items found in missions.

- Operatives will be able to carry wounded or dead teammates for evac.  Thus saving their equipment.

-drool-

About that fifth class:

I was thinking it would be a Psi-Operative but having aliens working with X-Com would rock.

THREAD UPDATE:  One week out from release.  There are a few vids out there of TB, Angry Joe and Beagelrush etc. playing it.  And it looks beautifully brutal.

Just how brutal is it going to be?  Well...

- Sectopods can walk through buildings now.  And their new Wrath Cannon can fire through several troops at once.  Also has a "High Stance Mode" which increases it's range and weapon reach.

- Advent Shieldbearers are capable of putting multiple enemy units in cover with a shield bonus.

- Advent Stun Lancers can actually stun your operatives and render them useless.  They're also real Kama Krazy Warboys who will rush the fuck out of your guys.

- Run-of-the-mill Sectoids can now BRING ENEMIES BACK FROM THE DEAD.

- Chrysalids can now BURROW THROUGH THE FUCKING MAP!  And once they kill your soldiers they don't come back as zombies.  Oh no, that'd be too easy.  Now they spawn a cocoon that births THREE whole extra Chrysalids.  PANIC!

- New enemy type 'The Faceless' disguises itself as a random civilian till the moment it strikes.

- Archons (upgraded Floaters that look like Final Fantasy summons) can fly and unleash a devastating barrage attack.

...and that's just scratching the surface.

This is gonna suck...in the absolute best possible way.

 NONONONONONONONONONONONONONO.............

(Falls to the ground in fetal position as flashbacks to Whaling Town mission start....)

And then the guys that made Long War are going to be cranking out mods for this? How could it get even more merciless?

No, the LW guys are busy developing a completely different alien invasion strategy game.

I am this close >< to finishing LW.

Replacing XCOM's weapons with muskets.

Really hope this ends up coming out on Xbox One. Enemy Within was my first xcom game and I had an absolute blast.

It's like chess...but more awesomerest.

I'm pretty sure they said it's going to be PC only because Enemy Unknown sold poorly on consoles but did two million sales on PC.

They've said they're open to doing a port, but were concentrating on the PC.

Day one mods from the folks that did the Long War and as far as I know the first review...so hype.

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/02/01/xcom2-review/#more-344583

EDIT: I'm wrong there are a shit load of reviews on Metacritic so you might want to browse and see if your preferred outlet has their opinion up.

Thread Starter

Yup, the reviews are pretty much unanimous and overwhelmingly positive.  The worst crtitique I could find was EGM who gave it a 7.5/10 due to the critic not being a fan of the crushing difficulty and large amounts of stress caused by dwindling resources and growing soldier casualties.

Well...that's X-Com baby!

The general consensus is that they improved on EU/EW on pretty much every level, especially the strategy layer.  The story is also getting a lot of praise.

Now we just need to wait until Friday.  :(

Might have to overcome my cheapskateness and preordered this one.

Pre-loading this so hard right now so I can spend the next two days staring at the shortcut on my desktop.

C'mon you apes!  You wanna live forever?!

Is everyone too busy playing to comment or wtf?

So lots of good stuff, a lot less irritating stuff and a lot of stuff in general. I don't want to get all crazy about it if the thread is dead.

In honor of WasteofTape and since he can't play the game on a console I put him in the game. Behold!

There's Walt "WasteOfTape" Chewoski laying into a Muton with his sword...let me tell you it didn't go well but he survived.

And that's his bio. You'll notice in the top right corner he was Gravely Wounded. That was the outcome of the Muton swordfight, heh.

That's about as close as I could get to his likeness.

I hope you aren't pissed Waste, I just thought it would be cool if you could fuck some aliens up until they hopefully pull the trigger on a console port so you can enjoy it for yourself.

To be honest he's pretty fucking badass compare to my other rangers, I'm not sure why but he's always getting beat to shit and making it out alive.

Oh and the biography says when Advent outlawed alcohol and raided your homebrew stash the officer called it "mediocre". When the backup arrived they found the entire team dead and the Officer in a keg.

I was going to make Codename too but I haven't unlocked a T-Rex head yet.

That's awesome. My poor Macbook Pro probably can't handle this so I'm stuck waiting on a console port as well.

*sigh*

I'm pretty sure Mongy could or any of the other PC Master Race horde here. I didn't even bother checking the specs and it's defaulted with just about everything maxed out (I think). Then again I didn't even realize my monitor resolution was fucked until Mongy mentioned it. Meh.

The gameplay itself has been fine, no crashes and the fps is smooth. During the transitional screens, I'm assuming it's when the game is loading it's choppy as fuck though. It takes nothing away from the game though since the cutscenes have all been fine too.

Drop your cock and grab your socks. You're going boots on the ground. I swear to god I'll put every chewer in this game goddamn it.

It's a Plex server, it's got the specs to run the game, I just have no idea about the graphics side of things:

My laptop's specs are too low :\

It dropped already? Bummer, I'm going to have to wait until after mid-month.
I wish this game wasn't so buggy. Was getting crashes in the first couple of hours. Mid way through I'd run into an odd scripting bug on the emergency missions where triggers wouldn't execute the next mission bits. Game performance isn't all that great even with an uber pc of the ages. And then at the end of all things (running two unique save files, playing from different points in time before the finale) the game won't trigger the last boss fight sequence in the game. I'm just stuck wandering around the empty arena going wtf Firaxis?

This is in need of a patch or two. I was enjoying it when it wasn't a fucking jankfest, but shit has taken it down a few notches when next years goty lists become a thing.
I haven't seen any real bugs so far (after about 7 hours play) but reports I've read have been all over the place in terms of the severity of the issues. Maybe I've just been lucky so far, though I have noticed the game straining a bit here and there performance-wise. I did notice a 600-or-so-MB patch dropped yesterday, but haven't had a chance to play again yet.

Apart from that, the time I have had with the game has been great. Still trying to get my head around the turn limits and changed pace of the game, but it's fun. The character pool is a stroke of genius and restores the fun of renaming characters: now going to the trouble of editing soldiers isn't a total waste when they get wiped out in their first mission, and they're saved permanently so they can keep coming back in subsequent games.

I think I broke the game.

My last Advent mission the last three enemies froze on me for some reason, they just growl and point. So I figured it's a bug, mowed them down and went on my merry way. Back at base everything was fine and I went through the busy work, building, etc. I got a raid mission, suited the squad up and headed out so I started with my typical conceal/screening run with a couple rangers and spot a few enemies right off the bat. I grab high ground with the rest of my squad, set a few on overwatch to pot shot the runners after my heavy drops a grenade in the middle of them and then all HELL BREAKS LOO....nope it doesn't. They don't trigger the overwatch and they just stand there, pointing and growling. If they're all stuck it looks like my Commander+Ironman playthrough is going to be preeeeeeeetty easy.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. I was hyped up to be playing too after doing Dad stuff all day and the kids are knocked out.

I chatted with some helpful posters/people and did some more research and decided to try running this without a dedicated graphics card.

Running okay so far.  Yeah, it's not the prettiest, but I don't need it to be.  It is a little slow when the computer is thinking about something, but at least I can play it until I upgrade my laptop someday or it ports to consoles.

My biggest issue right now is my wireless mouse/keyboard.  I have this: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Combo-Mk550-Keyboard/dp/B003VAHYNC/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1454859347&sr=8-4&keywords=logitech+wireless+keyboard+and+mouse

but the range is about nothing.  I'd like to keep my server where it is, about 20' from my couch, but I don't seem to get half that range - I had to move the server to test everything out :\

Awesome. It's fun even if it doesn't look that great. I played the first one on my phone too and it didn't look as good as the pc version but it was still fun...made my phone hot though.

Only my mouse is wireless. It's a Logitech G602. It works alright for around 20', I haven't had any issues and there's no noticeable latency.

If you turn the tutorial off you can play on a higher difficult if that's your thing.

I've got  a Commander + Ironman game going and one on normal, I think it's Veteran. The normal playthrough is pretty breezy right now, I haven't lost anyone outside the tutorial soldier that gets smeared. In Commander though, heh, lots of dead assholes that miss 75-99% shots.

I talked my girlfriend into starting a game on easy and I don't think she'll be finishing, it stresses her out.

Life got in the way over the weekend so I only got to play about two hours last night.

This game doesn't even lube up first or anything.  First proper mission I did post-tutorial I only had one survivor.  Mission afterwards my squad gets taken out completely.  X-COM BABY!

I see a few restarts in my future.  Although I was pretty fucking tired last night so my tactical acumen may have left something to be desired.  Will give it some proper love tonight.

Game has been playing well hooked up to the TV.  Have only played a few more missions.

Since I've had trouble with my mouse and keyboard, I decided to try RDPing to it from my laptop, but XCom just bombs out when I try to do that.  Would be nice to move the server back out of sight and be able to play while also watching TV.

I've been having really strange issues with the steam overlay and the game. For some reason when I hit f12 to print screen it's reading it as Alt+Control+F12 in Xcom2. So that turns on recording in Afterburner. I got on my rig today and saw I was 250gb short on my steam HDD and thought, "Hmm that's weird." So I started snooping around and I had a folder full of gameplay videos that when I started watching them I realized were the times I was trying to take screenshots. So yeah, very strange. I uploaded a video but it's out of sync and I've deleted the videos from my drive so meh. BUT, it did level my steam profile up for sharing a video so go me, I guess.

I haven't had any issues outside of the framerate dropping now and then.  -knocks on wood-

Been having a ball.  You really feel like you're just hanging on at all times and spread even more thin than EU/EW.  Still, so far, so good.

And may I just say:

FUCK STUN LANCERS

I finished my Veteran playthrough and the final mission honestly makes me not even want to fuck with my Commander + Ironman game anymore. Jesus Christ. It's still absolutely great but I can't imagine going through that again since on Veteran alone one of the big baddies was dodging EVERYTHING and by the time I got there I was nearly tapped out of explosives and other guaranteed damage dealers.

Some general thoughts. Psi Soldiers are amazing, granted the way they level up conflicts with every other class it makes it hard not to use them to soften up targets then let someone else get the kill toward their next promotion but they're so fun to play and really, really satisfying when you've been dealing with mind controlling assholes since the second or third mission.

I have no idea how to build radio towers. I've never done it and I really have no idea what it even means as right now I'm too lazy to Google it.

Stun Lancers are pricks but the damn Archon dodge constantly. 98% shot, yeah, no, dodged.

Serial is amazing. A static sniper with good elevation for los can mop an entire map up.

The character pool is fantastic. There's nothing as funny as watching my girlfriend freak out over some badass looking Rookie she got then the look on her face when I tell her that it's one of my soldiers.

I want to try SMGs. I've avoided them until now but I think I'm going to give them a shot on a clean start.

Every single class is built really, really well and with things like the W.A.R. and Wraith suits you can take a middling Specialist or Ranger and make them a terror.

Andromedon are the best VIP security ever. Mind Control one and absolutely ruin the Advents day with their own asshole unit...and there's a twist with them that makes for a more challenging risk/reward than say a Muton Berserker.

The UFO hunt Dark Event mission is my favorite XCom mission of all time.

I only played on Friday over the weekend.  Did a Retaliation mission where Chrysalids show up for the first time...

It went full Klendathu not long into the mission...I noped the fuck out of there and played Metal Gear Solid the rest of the weekend as a sort of comfort food.

I'll jump back in soon I guess.  But I can ill afford another Klendathu.

30 hours in, and I still haven't quite gotten my head round how you play the strategic Geoscope metagame. I like that it's more varied and less locked into one optimal path than EU, but it still has that feeling of forcing you to spin a whole bunch of plates simultaneously but not giving you time to keep the most important one spinning. Okay, so the main priority, at least in the early game, is making contacts and building up your income, but for that you have to keep building comms stations, and for that you need engineers, but you can't throw all your effort into finding engineers because you have to keep upgrading your equipment and for that you need scientists, but once you have scientists then you need to gather resources and build facilities to research new equipment and for that you need engineers, and so on and so forth. And while you're doing all that, you have to be working out what missions you should be taking and which you should skip because you can't even finish scanning anything without the game going 'LOOK! MORE SHIT YOU NEED TO DO!'.

Mod support is a godsend, and to be fair the game is encouraging me to learn its systems a lot more than EU did, but I think I have some homework to do.

I think all of you must be doing better in the geoscape game than I did my first playthrough. I was under the impression that the Avatar bar filling meant game over so I sandbagged until there were three boxes left and started storming every blacksite I could get into. From there it was a whirlwind of research, skulljacking and the next thing I knew it was over in about twelve hours total. I think Mongy finished even faster.

I'm tempted to try one of the mods that adds ticks to the Avatar project bar based on difficulty just to have more time pissing around.

Lately I haven't been actually playing and just seeding the character pool with new faces and custom biographies for my girlfriend to stumble across in her game.

With the character creator on the pool letting you set your creations to be VIPs, etc. I have some fun making random game characters like Big Boss and then listening to her reactions while I'm painting.

"Hey honey!"

"Hmm?"

"The VIP looks like the snake guy."

"What snake guy?"

"You know the cigar guy with the thing..the eyepatch."

"Big Boss?"

"Yeah! That's weird huh?"

"Yep."

She also hates every custom Nation flag I've added except the Jolly Roger. That one flag has gotten her completely into the concept of making your own characters. She got a random spawn that looked like a librarian and proceeded to spin this whole narrative about her. "Her kids were sick and they were chosen for genetherapy. Then the doctors told her there were complications and she won't be able to visit them. Then a year passes and she's a mess and her husband is talking about a divorce. She still hasn't seen her kids so she starts looking into other disappearances and the next thing she knows she's in someone's basement across town learning about the crazy, sketchy stuff Advent is up to. Now I fly in and make contact and boom, she's my new rookie. Look at her hair! Could I cut mine that short? I wonder how it would look if it was red."

Xcom 2, bringing couples closer.

I don't stress recruiting Scientists that much.  I think I only have like 3 at this stage.  Less Scientists just means your research takes a bit longer.  For me it's all about the Engineers.  You save a lot of space on The Avenger by putting them in Power Conduits and Resisitance Comms.  And a engineer in the Advanced Warfare Centre is an absolute must because it increases your soldiers healing by a 100%.  Oh, and make sure you get the upgrade from the Advanced Warfare Centre that lets you use Gremlins as Engineers.   Frees up your boys and girls to do all the other important shit.

I do focus a lot on hampering the Avatar Project through storming sites and doing the relevant Guerilla Ops for Avatar Project Dark Events and just dealing with what the others do.  That gives you a lot of time to do your research and build your troops and facilities up.

Ended up finishing this last night after a bit of a break from the tension.

Actually kicked ALL the ass on that gauntlet of a final mission.  Only lost one soldier (RIP Major Tariq 'Teardrop' Perkins) and managed to straight up execute TWO of the Avatars on the first shot!  I wish I recorded it because I can barely believe it happened and I WAS THERE.

Overall, a goddamn blast of a game and as worthy a sequel to Enemy Unknown as that game was a worthy reboot to a beloved franchise.

And that ending made me super excited for what comes next...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
TERROR FROM THE MOTHERFUCKING DEEP!

I actually hope the sequel takes a page from X-Com: Apocalypse's playbook and puts you in a position of relative power in the new, liberated Earth government.

While I love the underfunded and outgunned aspect of EU/EW and the Guerilla resistance of 2, it's going to take a lot to make you feel like an underdog again.  And I just don't see them going the "You lost, AGAIN!" route.  So try something different Firaxis.  It couldn't hurt.

Well, I'm sold.  My kids and I still play Enemy Within, and it hasn't gotten any less fun with the passage of time.  If XCom 2 is as worthy as all that, I'm in.
