Blizzard's OVERWATCH

Goes into beta on the 27th.

http://www.polygon.com/2015/10/14/9530637/overwatch-beta-launch-date-blizzard-entertainment

Definitely going to try this if I can get in.  Love the look of it all.  Hopefully I won't suck as much as I did on the Battlefront beta.

And a Blizzard game that's playable a year after it's announced?  What is this lunacy?

*CUMMMMS*

Oh man I was waiting for this...  I'm currently a Heroes of the Storm nut...  Heroes elements in a Blizzard FPS?

*signs up for the beta another 100000000 times*

Couldn't get into Heroes Of The Storm (Awesomenauts remains the only MOBA to ever captured my interest) and I'm really picky with FPS' but... hell, yeah, I'm looking forward to this. I look forward to meeting you guys on the battlefield and shouting "REKT!" (or possibly "SHREKT!") in the chatbox at you.

You don't DESERVE this game you swine!!!!

Yeah, I've never been a fan of MOBA's either.  If that's your thing, good for you but no.

I just love the character designs for Overwatch.  From Winston, the mecha-gorilla with glasses to the cowboy guy or the robot that turns into a turret.  They all look really fun to play.

It's the control scheme. I've never really been able to get into RTS games and clicking somewhere on a screen to order my character there, or clicking on who he or she (or it) is meant to be attacking, instead of doing all of this myself, is a barrier I find difficult to get around. I want to be the character, not a floating pointer, and that lack of immersion pushes me away from the game. I didn't even make it half way through HOTS' tutorial.

I never liked Moba's either, but it reminds me basically of Diablo 3, a badass hero unique abilities etc.  Not sure about the disconnect between character and action, but to each their own.

That being said the biggest appeal of Heroes is unique, funky fun characters with vastly different power sets that feel different from each other. This is what excites me about this game.  Team Fortress is nine unique cool funky characters, but this could be 100 by the time they're done.  With so many different Heroes that play differently the endless gameplay combinations are literally that.  Endless depth.  This game could EASILY last a decade if Team Fortress can do in on nine character dynamics.

I gave up Diablo III after a couple days of play for the same reason. If I could move with WASD in that game, I might still be playing it. I got the game for free for keeping my WoW subscription when Blizzard was offering that deal, so I didn't mind not liking Diablo that much.

Oh yeah, I really want to play this. Can't wait to see what Blizzard does with first-person.

The slower ability-based gameplay seems like it might suit my increasingly age-calcified brain. My days of being able to properly compete in an online FPS are probably behind me.

I'm one of those weird types that likes to play online games for the fun gameplay, glory, helping out the team, etc. Not grinding for hero unlock points or whatever. I don't know what they have planned for Overwatch with that.

I've noticed my own reflexes slowing as I reluctantly age, and that's a large part of what drives my facination with optimizing the user interfaces in the MMOs I play.

One FPS-style game that I've really enjoyed is Nosgoth, where the vampire team's ability to scale walls and snipe humans from rooftops allowed me to stay out of the crazy melee down below. It allows me to pick targets at my own pace, sparing me a lot of frustration. I could imagine enjoying good results in Overwatch if there are characters who can remove themselves from close quarter engagements in similar fashion.

For anyone who can tolerate Angry Joe, he's streaming this right now.

I don't think I want to watch any streams.  You don't want to invite me to the beta, but you'll invite basically all the streamers?  Fine.  Fuck you.

I'm sure it wasn't personal. Or maybe it was. Who knows?

Looks really good, this.

Stop saying it looks good I want to cry!!!

You'll pay Blizzard...  You'll pay...

I love the "Play Of The Game" feature after a match concludes, where it not only shows who performed best in the match but then gives you an example of one of their kills.

This game sounds AMAZING.

Just got the Battleborn beta key...  Not the one I wanted!  Waaaaaaaah!!!

Either this or Gigantic are probably going to be my next big time-waster methinks.

Best / worst scenario: I like them both, and then never leave my home again.

Holy crap. One of the characters can forward and rewind time! Have 10% health left and someone is about to shoot you? Rewind time to three rooms back when you had more health and try again! That's pretty cool.

Yeah that's the cockney female chick right?  She's like the Flash if he used time to move fast.

Yeah, that's the one! Such a cool mechanic. All of the characters have a nifty gimmick that makes them look interesting to play around with.

It's why I love Heroes and it got me into a MOBA hardcore for the first time ever.  The characters all feel unique and different with tons of personality.  They each have three totally unique abilities that are cool and fun to use and as choice of two ultimate epic super abilities.  It leaves room for endless gameplay combinations with something like 30 characters in Heroes.  Overwatch is so exciting because it's the first FPS I've seen that really takes that moba concept and runs with it in a high quality first person shooter.  Super Monday Night Combat not really counting, and Bloodborn aside.

http://strawpoll.me/5854161/r

Here's a fun poll.  Of 30,000 people who took the poll, 1000 got into the beta.

It would be interesting to know how many of those accepted for the Beta were streamers and journalists. I need to become Ultimate Flour-Based Food Product on Youtube and take Total Biscuit's crown so all the beta invites come to me.

This is what REALLY annoyed me today.  From what I can tell, most of the people who got in are streamers.  And EVERY streamer on Youtube got in.  Every notable one of them got an invite.  I get it, obviously why they did things this way but also...  Fuck that.

Yeah, that sucks.

Don't worry, Freeman. Once I get going, you can be the Other Joe to my Angry Joe.

The funnier better looking fitter beta male who, let's face it, probably shouldn't be the beta male in that dynamic?

Yeah, but to compensate for his other advantages, his Intelligence score seems to have been lowered.

Not to go all Coke vs. Pepsi or Nvidia vs. AMD, but man this launch day for Battleborn is pretty abysmal if my friends list is a worthy metric.

Most major releases I can count on the same 5-8 guys buying a major title as a sign of its popularity. Nobody has bought into Gearboxes latest, ouch. How long before we start seeing population drops on par with Evolve.

Meanwhile the Overwatch hype is real. So many people are marking their calendars for this weeks beta. Maybe I'll see if I can redbox Battleborn but no, nothing about it says its a must buy.

Too wordy. You want something memorable, but quick and easy to say when others discuss you.

You should become Nacho Daddy. Or Broth Neckstrength. Ya-Ya Battleface. Snog McNog. Hunk Sizzlechest.

I could do this all day. On one of WoW's roleplaying servers, I used to have a Goblin Shaman named Rick Rockroll.

How'd you get that surname going chief?

Glisten pushes his glasses further up his nose with one finger, and quietly sobs.

I'm sure everyone knows this (thanks to Codey for the notification!), but Overwatch is in Open Beta over the next few days, which means everyone can play it for free. I'm going to be dividing my time between this and Paragon - which is running a stress-test weekend at the same time - whilst trying to remember the last time I saw sunlight.

Hoping I can get in tonight.

This game is fun as fuck. Best time I've had with an online shooter since TF2.

You guys playing on console or PC?

Great cast of characters.  D.Va's proven to be my favourite so far.

I've already gotten three Plays of The Game thanks to suicide bombing the fuck out of the other team with D.Va's ultimate.

"Nerf this!"

Decided to try out Bastion before calling it a night. Just got my first Play of the game. There was a z corridor where I was defending, switched to turret mode, around the other corner 5 guys came marching in, 5 corpses lay on the ground. omgcat that was the best feeling of all times.

Seems like a safe bet to buy this on pc, cheaper too. I can count on Blizzard for going above and beyond when it comes to hackers and cheatengine fucks. Will probably end up picking it up for Xbox too for coop with family in Canada.

Tried Mei out tonight, I should talk all wooden and shit like Captain cold when playing as her. Probably my least productive session, maybe once I helped the team by funneling folk into going a certain way, didn't do any real damage until I got my blizzard ultra.

Downloaded this last night but not going to be able to jump on until tomorrow. Thinking of trying this out with my Steam controller, just so I can play it on my sofa via Steam Link.

Mei is cute as fuck.  She's also really good at disrupting the opposition.  Especially fucking Tracer.  Love throwing down ice walls at the attacker entrances.

Got my first PS4 matches in last night. Swapped mostly between McRee and DeathBlossomShadowWraith guy. Had a blast in the AI training sections but got lit up in actual gameplay. Team-building is paramount as well as I could see communication on mic being a must. Bastion kept closing off any return to gameplay during one match I was in.

A big problem I have is the respawn locations being so far from the action and the slowness of the characters. Half my game time was spent traversing the maps just to get back to where things were happening.

If you had a dedicated team who could swap characters as the map/gametype demanded this has potential as the wrecking shop I did in the AI section showed.

It is absolutely a different animal though. Don't go in expecting a CoD rehash. I am not sure I'll keep my pre-order just yet but it could grow on me. I imagine this is how Splatoon plays on the Wii U though.

God damn Bastion.  My first night he got play of the match EVERY time.

I've been playing with sniper lady and her cool TF2 style charge up sniper rifle.  It's INSANELY easy to get cools and fun as hell.  Genji is fun too but very skill based.

Very enjoyable. Abilities all seem well thought out and useful.

Would like a 'spaz' mode where things run about 20% faster. Seems like I spent an imbalanced amount of time just walking to the fight. Git gud, I guess. Such is the price of dying like a nub.

Are there teleporters? There has to be, but fucked if I saw any. Squarejaw McGraw was my go-to, seem like a pretty high skill cap on him. Enjoyed the DJ Rasta guy as well, switching between buffs. It looked like there was some sort of multiplier that was increased by .... feeling the rhythm? Not sure.

Symmetra is able to put down teleporters.

I've actually been finding myself mostly playing the support characters because NOBODY FUCKING ELSE DOES!  Not that I mind, Lucio and Mercy change the game up a hell of a lot and they are very fun to play with.  The multiplier Lucio gets is how many of your teammates are benefiting from your buffs and healing by the way.

And like Mongy says upthread, it's really nice when the other players shower you with likes when you're a battlefield medic god.
