Got Play of the Game with Soldier 76's ultimate. I missed making a team kill on my own by a hair.

Lol there is great counters for him!

The McCree combo, which is flash bang someone who's near and unload 6 bullets into their stupid faces is very satisfying.  Genji is hard to master but once you get things ironed out it's incredibly rewarding.  You feel so cool dashing in, securing a kill, deflecting when somebody fires on you and killing them, dashing out of combat and sneaking around.

Obviously the reason the game feels SO good is that Blizzard polish, but it also has to do with the super powers.  It's an Avengers game at the same time as being a shooter.

I found Winston to be satisfying last night. Especially on the bazaar/city center map with Objective Defense as the mode. The attackers were all funneled into one of two lanes/entrances. I would throw down a shield as soon as they came in sight, dodge to the side and kill most of them.

Also found Winston's leap and pound to be effective to getting behind not only most groups and finishing them off but very effective against Bastion for that very reason. I'd end up behind him and as he was transforming out of sentry mode he'd be dead before he got another shot off.

This game definitely will require a coordinated team. May have to drop by the Destiny thread and drum up some interest.

best counter to bastion is the ninja guy with his reflect power, send all that chaingun damage right back at him.

I am settling into a pattern where when I am on offense I like reaper or roadhog, and defense I go bastion, or junkrat. My kids make fun of me because they are all the low difficulty heroes.

My younger son is a savant with mei, he can solo the entire opposing team at a chokepoint. He throws up the wall to isolate a guy, freezes him, kills him. If he gets into trouble he goes to invulnerable icicle status, once he comes he comes out he isolates another guy with a wall. etc., he also uses the icewall as an elevator. It's amazing what some of these twitch kids who grew up with wasd can do.

Beta has been extended by a day.  So we get a whole extra 24 hours to be pissed that our teams have 3 Widowmakers/Hanzo's but no Tank/Support so I fucking guess I have to be Mercy for the 20th fucking game straight.

I actually love playing her and Lucio.  And I'm trying to get better with Zenyatta who's extremely cool.  But goddamn, once in a while I would like to get my Soldier 76 or Junkrat on.

Hurray!

I STILL haven't tried everyone.  The only healer I've even tried is Lucio, who I admit is actually crazy fun.  Blizzard is insanely good at that part.

Pretty much the only character I haven't tried yet is Symmetra.  Because I really don't like turret characters.  Torbjorn I've played once and that wasn't for me.  I prefer knowing the roster because it gives me a better idea of what heroes would work for countering another hero or even who works best on a specific map.  Mercy might kick ass on Temple of Anubis but on Ilios, Lucio is a much better support to play.

Some I play better than others.  Winston in particular I just can't seem to develop a feel for.  Same with Bastion, Widowmaker or Tracer.  But I've pretty much won games single handed with Reinhardt and kick ass with D.Va, 76, Junkrat or Pharrah.  The meta for this game is surprisingly complex.

Blizzard deserve serious credit for taking what could have been a run-of-the-mill TF2 clone and turning it into an amazingly well polished and balanced MP game that legitimately excites me to play.  And THAT'S a big deal for me.  The last MP-only game that hooked me like this was Unreal Tournament in ages past.  It takes something really special to make me want to come out of my single player-only cave.

I keep thinking I wasn't enjoying this, but then my Saturday disappeared, so it's definitely doing a lot of things right.

Mei is the only one I can get the combo right though.

Yeah, I cant figure out what I am supposed to be doing as winston.

Bastion is EZ mode, set up around corner, wait. Lay waste to entire team as they round the bend. Head self, set up in  new position. I think I went 32-2 one round with him. Widowmaker is standard sniper, like any other game.

Tracer is interesting. She has only 175 life, but proper use of rewind puts her around 300 life, she has great mobility, but can't change levels, so she is forced to get through the choke to fulfill her flanking/harassment duties. My older son was kicking ass with her, but I am at a loss.

Yeah, I played the beta for a bit. But it's basically just Team Fortress 2--which there's nothing wrong with that.

I kept thinking that something is missing, and I think it's player collision.  You don't run into anyone unless triggered by a special event.  I'll run into a crowd, swinging Reinheart's hammer, and it never connects.  I don't even know if I'm doing damage until someone (most likely myself), dies.

Hanzo can go to hell though.  Random-ass oneshot bastard.

Still irritated how slow anyone but Tracer feels.

So I fooled around with this a bit this morning and it really is a lot of fun with all the different powers. I'll pick this up when it's half off or on sale because paying anything more than $30 bucks for this seems excessive.

Are you really surprised by this?

Am I allowed to be a little? I dunno; I just figured I wasn't in the minority when it comes to not wanking over made-up wimmin.

Anyways, I've only given this a little bit of my time over the weekend and like what I see but I'm not sure if it's enough to prompt me to pay full price for this. Still, between this and Paragon which I've been playing recently, this is certainly the stronger title - although I'm aware that this has different gameplay elements (Paragon is much more like Smite) and Overwatch is much closer to release and therefore more polished. Blizzard have done a great job at making the characters unique and it's the little touches which matter (i.e Bastion chuckling when he unleases his cannons). I can see why it's captured the zeitgeist.

The fun factor is high for this one and that's what matters the most to me.  It doesn't take itself too seriously and Tracer? She's a very fun and good looking video game character, so of course there's art out there celebrating her.

Not that I've seen any you understand.

I have.  You guys made me curious.  THERE'S SO MUCH OF IT!

Lots of it gives her a dick I guess that's a thing.

Sadly that's been a thing for years. I don't understand it either but hey it's called "artistic license" for a reason I suppose.

I just played a game where everyone on my team went Tracer and bullied me into being Tracer.  I thought "this will be dumb fun."  Then I got to the point and realized EVERYONE on the other team was Tracer.  It was SO fun.  Absolute madness, twelve people zipping around like the Flash, bullets and bombs flying every which way.

Then the next round the other team suggested we all play DVA's.  So we all switch, and we rocket towards the middle...  Only to see the entire other team has gone Reinhart, apparently her natural counter.  So.  Much.  Fun.

Ha. I keep getting stuck on really, really bad teams.  If I'm making the leaderboard, you know the team sucks.

Switched back to TF2, convinced I wasn't having as much fun.  Felt like eating a handful of amphetamines, it plays so much faster.  But, I missed the gloss of Overwatch.  If they could speed the game up a bit, and cut down time between engagements, it would be great.

Overwatch is too SLOW for you?!?!?!

You haven't been playing Tracer.

Or have the Jamaican boom box guy on your team. That was my character the few hours I played today.
Thread Starter

I know it shouldn't matter, but I feel the need to point out that Lucio is Brazilian, not Jamaican.

But yep, his speed boosts are GREAT for getting to objectives and just bumrushing the fuck out of the other team.  Also his wall running has saved me from quite a few fall deaths.

Then you have Pharrah's jetpack, 76's sprint, D.Va's rockets, Widowmaker's grappling hook, Winston's leap, Reinhardt's charge etc.  Lots of ways to increase mobility in the game.

Lucio can wall run?!?!?!  How have I never discovered that?!

Also, Genji can double jump and leap over almost any wall or obstacle.  Couple that with his forward dash attack that lunges him 30 feet and you've got some hardcore mobility.  Outside of the Scout in TF2 there aren't nearly as many speed boost options.

How can I tell that Overwatch has more hype than Battleborn?  Because there's been a ton of rule 34 machinima of it the past few months, while there's basically been little to none of Battleborn.

Porn drives markets.  Hello Betamax and HD-DVD.

Yeah I know, OW and BB aren't  really the same type of game, but they are getting compared and debated a lot regardless.

*EDIT*

The stuff certainly got me more interested in Overwatch.  Been playing the beta the past couple of days, and its like, oh so thats the game the characters in those vids were from, and so that's what they look like with their clothes on.

There's even one of the big Russian chick.  Everybody has there fetish.

First thing I did before playing for real was to go into training and mess with all the characters. They handily tell you what each characters' abilities are.

I mean you can look at them during selection while queing into a game, but training lets you relax and practice.

How long has the Beta been extended to? Can't seem to find any details other than the 9th.

I guess I have more money than sense as I'm now considering purchasing the game just for the pre-release stuff. For a game I probably won't play that much.

Thread Starter

Beta ends tomorrow on the 10th.

And as the amount of posts I'm making here indicates...I am definitely buying it.  I really didn't expect to be as taken with the game as I am but I've already been playing for 20 hours and have no desire to stop.  When I'm not playing it, I am thinking about it.  I often find myself looking for something to play but pretty much my entire library is heavily story based single player games.  And a lot of them I've played to exhaustion.  However a few matches every night here is exactly what I'm looking for.  And it helps that I am just completely enamoured with the characters, art style and lore.  For the $40 it costs, I think it's a good deal.

That origins edition can fuck off though.  5 skins for $20 extra?  Since the only one of those I actually like is Soldier 76's one that's a hard pass from me.

Yeah, I'm just going to pick up the standard version, especially as I haven't played even half the characters yet so skins are currently worthless to me.

Would have added you, Codey but:

(A) I don't have enough experience with the game at the moment and am not really worth teaming with until I improve.

(B) The social thingy only seems to want me to add people I've played with.

I said the same... But I really like the Tracer Aviator skin and I likely won't be able to get if any other way... Plus it gives me tons of WoW and Diablo and Hearthstone stuff.
Hmmm. Now you've made me want to try out the characters you get skins for tonight in order to work out whether the Origins Edition is worth my time.

Damn Blizzard. I've gone from "Nah" to "Okay, I'll get the Standard Edition because I don't care about skins!" to "Maybe I do....? Origins Edition, maybe?" in just a few hours. I need to sort out my life.

Give me a few more hours and I'll be purchasing the Collector's Edition!

Well, you get one Overwatch themed card back for Hearthstone.  Tracer to use in HOTS.  Mercy's wings as a piece of equipment for Diablo 3, 6 portraits for SC2 and a baby Winston pet for WOW (which I admit is pretty tempting). Not quite what I would describe as "tons" but what the hey, I'm not your banker.  Your money, your choice.  It's just not worth it for me.

Yes I was fully aware of that and TONS is maybe a hard sell.  The Winston pet is neat, but realistically I don't walk around with pets out.  I've done my Battle Pet stuff, and I can't see myself becoming addicted to it again.  I already bought Tracer in HOTS cause I had the gold and she was AMAZING pre nerf.

Honestly the only thing I actually want is probably the Tracer skin in Overwatch, cause I think it looks cool.  But that is not even remotely worth 20 bucks.  Yup, thanks for talking me back out of it.  The 40 dollar version is absolutely all I need.

Tracer or not the characters in this game move slow as hell and the amount of time traversing maps from the spawn point is a major turn off to buying this outright.

Wait, there is a $40 version of this?  I might be persuaded to buy that but still not sure as no one else has seemed to be playing it on my friends list.  And I'm not buying it to have them buy it then not play it.

The 40 dollar version is basically just the game.  The 60 dollar "Origin edition" version includes all the shit we were talking about up thread, most of it for other Blizzard games, most of it not REALLY worth spending money to have.  At least not 20 extra dollars worth it.  Consider it a Blizzard super fan edition.

Ok if there's one character in need of a nerf it's not Bastion.  It's fucking Mei.  Seriously, that freeze beam is incredibly OP.

A combo of Mei and just about anyone else is devastating. She's a decent sniper too.

I played Lucio, and he's a lot of fun, though I haven't worked out his abilities yet.

Really tried to make Symettra work, but I was useless. Never even got a turret assist. Tele always arrived too late to help.
I'll have to play around with the more mobile characters, as coming from Titanfall I also found this game to be very slow.

Are there any levels that are a little more open? I felt like i was playing in Dishonored back alleys the few matches I played.

I felt the same way you did at first. But most heroes have abilities that speed them up  and will recharge by the time you make contact. The long traversals really mean that a symmetra in the early game should be included on every team, without the traverse distance she would be a useless character. Reapers teleport has amazing distance.

Just to be clear, the $40 version is only on PC. As far as I can tell, the only version currently on sale for the console versions is the $60 one.

Thank you for clarifying this. I guess I should have said PS4 myself but, yeah, I definitely had not seen a cheaper console version without all the extras.

I wish there was a TF2 style spy or pyro class. Might try reaper for my sneaky fix. Diva kinda fits the bill for pyro, but not enough.
