2015/16 MLB Offseason thread

Today was the last day teams could make offers to their Free Agents.  You will see many 1 year offer sheets to guys like Daniel Murphy and Dexter Fowler because when those players reject them their teams will get sandwich picks between rounds 1&2.  Very valuable.

http://www.sbnation.com/2015/11/4/9665970/mlb-free-agents-rumors-rankings-2015-2016-offseason

Top 40 list.

Pitchers will lead the way this offseason-Price, Grienke, Zimmerman, and Cueto at the top.  No other pitchers should be signing before them as they will set the Market.  I would expect Grienke to stay in LA as they spends loads of cash and either Price or Zimmerman to come to the Cubs.  Expect $160+ mill deals easy.  I don't exext the Cubs to go over $175 so they may still get shit.

Hitters not as much but you can make a splash with Jason Heyward, Alex Gordon, and Yoenis Cespedes.

Here's hoping to some great trades and Free agents.  I'm hoping for 2 SP for the Cubs and a couple of vets.

Who is on your teams wish list?  And where will Heywood go because I want him out of STL.

Things should start gong off soon.  Fre Agency in about a week.

Grienke's the big story. He'll shift the balance of power in the NL.

And while I figure LA's the most likely spot for him, it's hard to guess exactly how much loyalty he feels, or whether an extra 5M or so on a 150-200M contract really matters to him. If he doesn't love it in LA, he can move in a blink w/o sacrificing much of anything.

Grienke said he loves LA and I don't expect him to move.  From I remember he doesn't like the big market spotlight, but with Kershaw it shields him.

What I'm trying to figure is who are the other teams that are in the hunt.  With 4 pitchers I'm just wondering who are the teams that will bid?  Dodgers, Cubs, Yankees all have the money to buy one of the 4.  But who will be the other?  Some teams that could like Boston or Philly are rebuilding so would they bother?  SF could.  Then you have to try and figure the out of the box team like Washington last year.

One of these guys maybe out of luck and get less than they wanted.

Blue Jays are in desperate need of pitching. Unlikely to resign Price, and they might lose Estrada, and Buehrle.

Can't believe the Red Sox traded their #4, 6, and 13 prospects for a closer.  Kimbrell is good but no way do you trade that for a closer.  You do that for a starter.  Now I know why the Cubs didn't tradewith them.  They want way too much.

And I kept hearing the Padres were still going for it this year.  Why trade an ace closer if you are still going for it?  I'm guessing many more will go then.

That's a haul for the Padres.  Wow.

I hate to see what the price is for a good starter.

Word is David Price wants to stay in Toronto if the Price is right.  That price being $200+ million.  Heard this on Chicago tv show.  No thanks.  I'd rather have Heyward, trade for a young arm and Jeff Samardija.  Our pitching staff can fix him.  Plus they would have both players back from the Russell trade.  Suck it Billy Bean

The Dodgers made an interesting choice for a manager.  They need to win now and they pick Dave Roberts who never managed before.  And he's on a team that can't steal a base.

I heard that also and don't believe it for a second.  All I hear is that Jays aren't going above 140M this year.  Heyward gonna cost 170M or more.  I'l 100% cool with Shark coming back.

As for managers when the hell is Dave Martinez going to get a shot.

I believe the $200+ million number though.  He should never get it though.

I'm not sure who the hell is going to pay out that much?

Yanks

Boston

Cubs

Dodgers

San Fran

Jays

I can't think of anyone else and I don't think any of them are going to deal out that much money.  I'm thinking he's trying to leverage the Jays to drive up the price or at least give a starting base.

Max Scherzer got it.  Someone will give it to him or very close to it.

I'd be very, very surprised if he gets that much.  Most of the big spenders are pretty tapped out in team salary.   Dunno.  We will see how this plays out.  Kinda surprised nobody of interest signed yet?  We usually get 2-3 before turkey day.

Yeah, I'm getting antsy. Do something!

I know it always works like dominoes, but that first domino is being surprisingly stubborn.

The first pitching domino is Price/Grienke.

Heyward is the first hitter.

They have to set the market.  I would bet the players union won't let anyone sign before these guys do.

And if Lester got $155 mil, $175 would have to be the minimum those 2 get.

Happ signs with Jays.  I think that closes the door for Price going to the Jays.

ESPN keeps saying 5 teams are in it for Price.  Red Sox willing to overpay by 30-40 million.  They can have him if that's the case.  I don't necessarily believe ESPN esp when they also say he can attain a 200 million deal.  No way he's worth that.  He's really good defensively but you need to put up major numbers offensively.

I saw that too and don't believe Boston would just come out and say that.  Smells like bullshit.

I think it's more Price's agent getting things out there.

Tigers signed Zimmerman.

Edit:  6/126M  20M a year for Zimm.   That'll set the market.

Edit II:  5/110M

Such a Tiger move.

And they guy reporting says the deal is around 100 million.  He probably worth that which surprises me because I'd thought he'd get a 120-140 million deal.

Maybe baseball teams are getting smarter?

I mean it's still over 20M a year.

5 years/110.   Not surprising.  By those numbers Price would need an 8 year deal to get to 200 million.

Price will get 30M a year, but the Zim deal isn't all that bad.

I'm just glad Zim didn't go to my team - way too high of odds that he'll never be the same.

Now if Price wants 5 years/140 he can have it and come to the Cubs and be in contention for a title every year and play in the best atmosphere in baseball.

LOL!  Money always wins out.

I'm content with Shark and resign Fowler.  Every thing else would be gravy.

7 Years 217 million for Price  And he goes to the Red Sox.  Can't say I'm surprised.

So glad the Cubs didn't do this.  Way too much money.

Looks like Heyward, Samardija, and a trade or two.

Wow!  Well, everytime I think there's no fucking way a team pays him <insert stupid money> someone does.

I didn't expect it to happen this quick.

Grienke will get near the same now.  He'll stay with LA and they will still lose.

Not sure if he'll crack 200M.  He's older and is not going to get 7 years?

Then again, I wouldn't be shocked.  I think Giants are going to make a run at him.

Grienke's worth it. Price isn't. He's had a lot of playoff starts now, and a terrible postseason ERA. I'd never want to pay someone that much, then be terrified when they make a playoff start.

John Lackey to the Cubs on a 2 yr/32 million deal.  I'll take it.  He'll make a solid #4 assuming we get a 3.  I hate the guys face but he did pitch well against the Cubs last year.  He also had a stellar ERA of 2.77.  He would have won 20 on the Cubs instead of 13 with the Cards.

I like it! I think unless they can snag a pitcher via trade hes number 3. With that wee can make a run at Heyward.

Baseball wise yeah but the guy is a dick.  Sent divorce papers to wife while she was battling cancer.  Then again those papers may have lifter her spirits.  I'm just glad Ross and Lester are there to keep him in line and teach him what's up in the clubhouse.

Also the Samardja to Cubs is now dead.  He has a 5 year $90 million offer out there.  Cubs wanted 3 year/4th option.  Oh well.  Trade time.

The cancer divorce stuff sounds crappy, but my Wife said last year you never know what's going on in a marriage. Seems like Ross and Lester love him, so I'll take their word. Still a great move and money to spare. We are a better team today. More moves coming!
I bet shark goes to the cards. Just seems like a cards move.
Thread Starter

No way.  Cards think players will take a discount to come there.  Cueto maybe.

And now Grienke to the DBacks.  He can make them a .500 club if he's still the stud from this past season.  I also weakens the Dodgers.

I'm kind of stunned the Dodgers wouldn't outspend the DBacks.  Wow-just heard it's a SIX year deal.

MLB Network talk

If anyone gives Heyward a 10 year deal they are nuts.  He has no power.  Great defense but that will fade after 4 or 5 years.  Then you are stuck.

Dbacks can have him. They'll still stink. Dodgers are now weaker. It's all good.

Wow!  Dbacks?!?!  Wow!  6/206.  Fuck!

That's insane. Cueto is the only one left. Haven't heard any teams.

Lester contract looks like a steal now.

Yeah, I'd have loved for SF to get him, but the LADs losing him is a fine, fine result.

I fully expect the Dodger to panic like a horny drunk at last call.

"If I squint REAL hard, this Cueto cat looks SUPER HOT!"

And Cueto turned down the Dbacks offer earlier.

Cubs still overpaid by $20 million but it got us Ross so it's a wash.

Giants signed Samardzija pending physical. 5 year deal, money not yet known.

I think it's 5/90

Yeah, he was saying he had a 5 year/90 mil offer.  The avg salary is about right, but it's a year too many.  As long as the Giants have an ace pitching coach to fix some things it should be a decent addition as long as they see him as a 4th starter, borderline 3.

Cueto is the big name/arm left.  Got to be the Dodgers or Cards, right?  That or the Nats go crazy again.

*Turns out cubs offered 5yr/85 and wouldn't go higher.  Id rather have Lackey with the 2 yr deal.

Cubs offered him the same amount per year, but less years.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN is reporting the Cubs are exploring a trade for one of the top closers.  Better not be for four prospects like the Red Sox.  And no Palpebon.  Chapman would be nice.  with Rondon/Stroup the 7th,8th,9th would be very strong.  With what they have adding an ace close would make their bullpen great.
