Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) Pre-Release Discussion brought to you by Overlord

Thread Starter

I mostly just want to see my name attached prominently to a thread that undoubtedly will reach into the thousands of pages.

Very surprised to hear that Harrison Ford will be returning.  Have we ever had a flashback or vision/hallucination in a Star Wars movie that wasn't Force-based?  Interesting to see how they'll manage that.

TR-8R better be returning in a larger role.

Prediction: The First Order has created multiple clones of Anakin Skywalker using the remains they recovered on Endor. EPISODE VIII is Rian Johnson's version of THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL.

As a giant fan of TBFB, I'd be very OK with this idea, so long as the clones don't have a problem pronouncing their "u"s.

EPISODE VIII: SEND IN THE CLONES

Yeah, I know.  I'll just step out now.

I know they're incredibly gunshy about it after the reaction to the politics in the prequels, but I think we need to see some kind of presence from (whatever is left of) the Republic.  Unless the idea is that, with the Republic and the First Order both wiped out, it's the Wild West in the galaxy and anything goes.

That would be kind of great, actually.

As for Ford, we'll see a flash or two of his death while Kylo is angst'ing over it.  Maybe Leia smiling at an old picture.  Nothing substantive makes any sense.

There's your Del Toro Villain right there.

My wild guesses for Episode VIII...

Clones are back in the picture.    Anakin is definite possibility but it would be even stranger if there's a Luke clone from the hand that cut off on Bespin.   After all, the saber is found so it's only a small leap to think the hand was found as well.

Kylo Ren gets a new look for Episode VIII.   Either he's unmasked OR he gets a look even closer to Darth Vader.

The movie picks up 6 months later and the first scene is Rey still trying to give Luke his saber back.   He finally says "You have been trying to give me that saber back for six months without any dialogue between us.   It is time to begin your training."

Opening shot: Luke force grabs the lightsaber out of Rey's hand, powers it up, and decapitates her in one smooth motion.

A moment later, he stares down at the blazing lightsaber in his hands in utter disbelief. A look of shock and disgust washes of his face, followed by rage. He leans back and screams to the heavens...

"DAMN YOU, NANOMACHINES!!!"

Two hour one-shot of Luke, alone on his island, waking and performing domestic chores and rituals before taking a walk to the top of his favourite cliff in the last 3 minutes.

I keep hearing that phrase every now and then. Where the hell is that from?

I hope Rian Johnson has come up with something more creative than Rey being Luke's daughter, but if that isn't the case, than cast Julianne Moore as her mother. She is the right age, talented and a damn fine looking woman to boot.

It's an actual song.  Even Sinatra did a cover.

Heh, I somehow avoided that then. Thought it was a quote from some film that was lampooned long ago and people remembered it when making fun of the title of ATTACK OF THE CLONES.

This. Oh, this.

Julianne Moore is great...

...but for some reason, I don't see her fitting into star war.  Mostly because she has SUCH a great established mainstream career (deservedly so), I would never really be able to see her as anyone but "It's Julianne Moore in a star war!!!"

I kinda had that feeling with Sydow... and at least that was a small role.  Also makes me think of Sam Jackson in the prequels.

I'd rather they stick with relative newcomers and people who aren't such huge stars.

Julianne Moore is great ...

... but Lucy Lawless is SO Rey's mum.

These just sound like uncreative fan-castings!

Nathan Fillion as Rey's mum!

Look, we all know Rey popped into existence when Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman wandered into one of those machines from Cronenberg's The Fly and things went horribly, horribly right.

Your mum is an uncreative fan-casting.

Everyone knows there are New Zealanders in all the best Star Wars films. Only a clueless buffoon would deny that Lucy Lawless should be in one.

I kinda like the Felicity Jones theory.  On the one hand, yeah, really trying hard to tie the Anthologies into the main series.  On the other, we're gonna get that regardless, and we could do worse.

What I want for Ep. 8 is for this thread to reach 500 pages before release.  That's less than a page a day!  Ambler, Nooj, and Freeman alone will be worth half of that.  The rest of you, get to work.  Except you, Barry.  You can sit this one out.

There's only one way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of star war: Bring back medichlorians!
As long as we find out Mon Mothma wasn't on not-Coruscant when not-Death Star went bananas I'm good with whatevs.

The reveal that Supreme Leader Snoke is just a hologram created by BB-8 in order to enact his agenda of creating Force-sensitive droids, who according to his calculations will up assembly-line efficiency at the blaster factories by 5%, thus creating manufacturing growth across the board for the next few fiscal quarters, will be called out as "predictable".

Yep. Written by the great Stephen Sondheim for A Little Night Music.

Judi Dench does it best.

According to Rian Johnson, the two films that have had the greatest influence on EPISODE VIII are Letter Never Sent and Twelve O'Clock High. Thoughts?

Interesting. I could see Letter Never Sent inspiring the search for the Jedi temple. Maybe Twelve O'Clock High will inspire Poe's journey?
Finally caught INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, I'm really hoping Oscar Isaac has a substantially increased role in the next. They can kill off Boyega Boba Fett-style for all I care if it means getting more Isaac.
Isaac really did make the most of his small amount of screen time. The guy is pure charisma. Looking forward to where his character goes.

My thoughts are that Rian Johnson is a known rapscallion and could be talking bollocks to throw us off the scent.

After the film releases, he'll reveal that Armageddon and The Truth About Cats And Dogs were his real influences.

Maybe it's a sneaky way of getting people to watch some underseen gems?  Next month it'll be something like, "It's really more Woman in the Dunes meets California Split."

Johnson has a deal with Criterion to help advertise their library.

"No, no, it's really My Darling Clementine meets Five Easy Pieces!"

I hope Johnson does the slashfilmcast before episode eight comes out. The Chen devindra trolling is stuff of legend.

Having not seen either, I can't speculate with any confidence. Both movies appear to be about people being worn down through grueling circumstances.

But maybe, just maybe, they're gonna do something with the Kiber/Kaiburr/Kyber crystal thingies that Lucas toyed with in early STAR WARS drafts.

Ford is back? News to me.

He's back, it's just part time.

Based on Rian Johnson's influences, could his film deal with the Resistance suffering a huge fallout at the beginning of the film due to the First Order that strands them on a dangerous planet/solar system, and somebody has to raise the morale to survive?

I kind of love that Johnson is bringing Ram Bergman, his producing partner, into Episode VIII with him. Strikes me as a sign that he's really taking ownership of his entry, which is exactly what I want to see. The fact that Johnson is apparently involved with the script for IX is further indication that something very interesting might be happening here.

I like not knowing where this is all going.

I hope so.

The Trevorrow factor really has me concerned.
