Looks like this movie will be coming out in December 2017 after all.

And a Pirates movie is coming out in Memorial Day in its place.

It's gonna be against AVATAR 2 for that Christmas money, though.  Will Cameron blink and move AVATAR 2 or will there be a bloodbath?

NEVER bet against Cameron as we know...  But come on.  Star Wars is winning that fight.  It's one movie that we're always arguing the cultural relevance of vs fucking STAR WARS.

While many will excitedly go to town on the Avatar 2 December showdown, that is probably not happening.

1) While I do not doubt that E8 beats Avatar 2 domestically, it still leaves money on the table.

2) I totally doubt E8 beats Avatar 2 internationally, so Disney would really be leaving a LOT of money on the table.

3) Disney's Animal Kingdom is opening up an entire Pandora section of their park, in partnership with Cameron.  Unless they have decided to table that (unlikely) and go BIG on Star Wars everywhere.  They have a vested interest in Avatar 2 doing well in the long run, since they are counting on Pandora remaining a HUGE draw.

So what happens now?  Who knows.  But if they do fight, it will be mutually assured destruction.

It's not in the best interests to have these films open against one another.  It'll hurt both films, and it'll also hurt the entire December market because all theaters will be solidly booked with both films, leaving one or maybe two screens for any sort of counter programming.

And IMAX?  No way both films aren't gonna fight over the IMAX screens.

AVATAR 2 will move...count on it.

Yeah AVADAH moving seems like a foregone conclusion.

But oh man it sure would be fun if it didn't!
Avatar 2 will be moved to december 2018. Cameron will sell the move to the public with an explanation about how they still have to invent the technology to realize his impossible ideas.

Episode 9 is coming out at Christmas too. Bet on it.

Ohhhhhhhhhh yeah, called that release date shift!

This is going to force Cameron to resurface way too fast and have to stay in a decompression chamber for a lengthy period, which will be Fox's excuse for why Avater 2 gets shifted to Summer 2018.

For this reason, I'm almost certain Disney has been told by Cameron that AVATAR 2 is not going to make its 2017 release date.  There's no way they'd make a confrontational move like this when they're working with him on the Avatar theme park stuff (and, frankly, that's a relationship that's been a little strained already).

As for shifting the release itself, it's kind of a bummer.  Not because I have to wait an extra seven months (which does kind of suck, but whatever), but because Disney isn't going to have anything in theaters to honor on the 40th anniversary of the first film.  And hopefully the move doesn't portend more serious issues, like the screenplay needing even more work.

Of course it does.

If I was Fox, I'd say fuck it.  I'd move Avatar 2 up to the 15th of December here, and open it a week before Star Wars E8 overseas in each respective territory.

Let's play.

Well yeah Johnson has been working on the script.

This has way more to do with $$$ than script issues.

As much as I think trying to rush the next movie to a date 18 months after the first could compromise it, this really bums me up.  How long must I wait to see more of Master Luuuuke!?

(7 more months, I know.)

On the upside, we have 200 extra days to get this thing to 500 pages before release... PUNCH IT!

Whatever happens, I'm pretty sure I can never hate Rian Johnson.

This smacks more of Disney demanding changes than it does of Johnson not having his act together. Yay for corporations!

Why?  Avatar grossed 2x what TFA has overseas.  Avatar would lose about $200M domestically because of Star Wars, hell, maybe $300M.  Episode 8 will lose more than that internationally, though.  Probably a lot more.  And Fox will have stuck it to Disney.  And no original Star Wars (1977) on Blu-Ray.

Scorch the earth.

Spielberg's Ready Player One is also set for the 15th.  Oh boy is this gonna be fun...

Well the reports they want changes are already out there, so of course it's about that.  But at least this way the talent will have time to work the new changes out.

Remember, it's all fanfic anyway!

Could it simply be "We like the film and we like where it is, we just want that massive Christmas success"?

Yeah, more script development worked out so well for SPECTRE.

GOTG 2 also comes out in May 2017 if I'm not mistaken.  And given that that's basically "Marvel's SW," Disney wanting to not have them going up against each other (not to mention the other summer blockbusters) makes sense.

To answer your question, you can't run a company and make emotional decision that could compromise the bottom line.  There are shareholders that will hold you accountable. Disney moved this to December, in my opinion, because they could potentially make more money in that time frame.  It would not make any sense for them to release 3 space movies (Rogue One, Gotg2, and Episode 8) within 5 months.

You also can't tell James Cameron his movie needs to be ready two weeks earlier.

It's a good business decision on their part.  I don't think there was any "let's screw over Fox" in their decision because they will definitely be competing with the box office take of Avatar 2.

If Avatar 2 is even ready at that point.

Do you honestly believe that this has nothing to do with the recent reports of delays for script changes?

Where there's smoke...

Release dates change all the time, no biggie.  Heck most people were expecting it to move anyway (May was a pretty rapid turnaround and it's only like 5 months after Rogue One comes out).  And the rewrites sounds relatively minor (supposedly filming was only maybe going to be delayed for a few weeks).  So again, no biggie right now/

The movie was due to start filming in the last week of January, then it was pushed back by a 3 week delay due to set construction taking its time. Nothing to do with the script. What can you honestly do in 3 weeks script wise? Also I'm sure the top brass at Disney must've read it waaaaaaay in advance.

I HAVE to believe that Rian Johnson knows exactly what he's doing and that he's going to fix this all, I HAVE TO.  I can't live in a fucking world where Star Wars is the biggest property ever and only TWO movies of fucking EIGHT are genuinely good!  Nine if you count the Clones Wars which is canon.

So because a movie that has nothing to do with this one apparently didn't improve given more time to work on the script, that means there is some across the board rule that more time to work on a script isn't helpful?  Why have a script at all?  They should just improv the whole thing!

Would it be better if Johnson had to try to incorporate the studio's notes on the fly while filming?  Of course not.

Rian has had two years to work on this script already, and JJ even made some changes to TFA at his request apparently.  So yeah, I think that he has a plan.

You want it to be good, don't you? The desperation is swelling in you now. With each passing moment you make yourself more Disney's servant.

This is why I have homemade Celine and Jesse action figures.  I'm still working on my playset of Vienna.  It's better to be a fan of perfect trilogies.

I was kidding, cat.  I wouldn't actually do that, because it would cost FOX millions, and cost DISNEY millions.  I do believe it would cost Disney more, though.

Yup. It's gone from starting in late January to mid-February.  That's...not much of a delay.  Now, Johnson does get an extra seven months of post time.  The Feb start would've meant they would be up against it in terms of post production, since they likely wouldn't have wrapped until the summer.  Instead he'll have about a year and a half for the edit/VFX/scoring/sound/any needed reshoots.  And that's time any filmmaker would be grateful for.

And there were definitely completed drafts of VIII all the way back in September, at the very least.  But it's certain that the top brass has been well aware of his broad strokes plans for a very long time, given that he's been working on this since Spring 2014.

All roads lead to Trevorrow. Hope is futile!

Yeah I think that they have the broad strokes already mapped out for the trilogy, it's simply a matter of filling in the details.  Also it seems like the directors have some level of involvement with each other, judging by their comments.

I keep forgetting Trevorrow is directing IV.

I can't wait to hear the Star Wars theme swell as one of the characters is browsing for deals at the power converter store.

Johnson tweeted pictures of babies with Werner Herzong and Quentin Tarantino's faces photoshopped on them to a friend of mine after my buddy tweeted at him "Even the biggest directors started small."

The man knows how to direct a film... and how to use twitter properly. I love the guy.

This delay is obviously because they didn't forsee the popularity of TR-8R and that's why the script is being re-written.

He'll probably replace Finn on the Chinese version of the poster.

They'll somehow rewrite it to where TR-8R was Gwendolyn Christie allllll along.
