I'd be okay with Streep. Weaver is too different looking for me to accept.
Isn't Sigourney like 6'3"? They'd have to pull some LOTR type trickery to make her not tower over Luke if they ever met again, and I know ILM is pretty good, but let's be real here - they're no WETA.

What about Daphne Zuniga?

It's a tough recast. Obviously there are plenty of actresses in Fisher's age range that could play the part, but would any of them feel right? That's why I think the voice only option is the classiest way for them to close out her storyline.

Anyways, I expect this at least be well above ROGUE ONE's caliber. Sure that's low, but I'm happy to get away from that.

Star Wars pre-release threads are like waiting rooms for mental hospitals.
Recasting is a terrible idea. It would be way too distracting. Iconic characters played by the same actor over multiple films are too solidified to screw with. This isnt Batman. And the focus would be on the actor replacing Leia and scrutinizing her performance rather than the film. Its just not smart.
Plus who would WANT to step into that role? At best, it would be, "Well, she didn't ruin Fisher's legacy." At worst, it would be, "Well, she ruined Fisher's legacy." I can't see them wanting to throw someone to those wolves.

And like Ambler said, the minute you recast, THAT'S the story of this film. Fisher's death is already going to hang over it. Why add to it?
Any professional actor knows roles are recast all the time. We're all seeing this from a very personal point of view because we all grew up with Carrie. But any professional actor who would be approached for the role would take it on in a professional manner and 95% of the public who don't have a personal connection to Star Wars would roll with it.

No one is replacing Carrie Fisher but someone would be recast in the role she left vacant. It happens.

Hey, did you know my friend's dad dated Daphne Zuniga in high school?

Seventh best movie of the 21st century?

Pitch Perfect.

Its not going to happen. Lucasfilm doesnt want Ep9 to be known as "the one where the iconic role was played by somebody else" which is whats going to be topic of conversation overshadowing everything. Its the kind of attention they would want to avoid.

How has no one suggested Daniel Day Lewis to play Leia?

The man disappears in every role he takes!

as long as he plays it with a thick mustache!

Personally....I only mentioned Meryl Streep in the context of "if" they recast. I don't want them to recast. I hope they pull a Dark Knight Rises and make Episode 8 Leia's send off and then come up with something else for the next one. It can't be impossible. I know that The Joker's not pivotal to Nolan's trilogy in the same way Leia is to Star Wars as a whole but still, TDKR is the gold standard when it comes to a tragedy altering a series' plans and handling it with class..

This whole thing is shining a harsh light on how I don't really need Star Wars in my life.

no more star war

It all depends on where VIII left Leia. I'm going to trust the filmmakers on what the best course of action is. Whether Leia is recast or writtten off, Carrie's absence will be distracting no matter how handled. You just have to accept it and move on. I'm open to both options in a manner that is respectful to Carrie and works best for the the story.

But CGI necromancy is still out of the question.
Like I've been saying, a few lines from Tarkin and a single line from Leia are one thing. A sustained co-lead/supporting role is another thing entirely.

They can avoid the appearance and performance continuity issues altogether by hiring a great voice actress to play Leia after death. Sure, they could just kill her, but this way allows the character and audience more closure. If the footage Fisher filmed for VIII is setting up more for Leia to do in IX, it's really doing a disservice to her work to truncate the storyline.

Exactly.  It's going to be conspicuous either way (written out or recast).  I'm in favor of whatever option can - in the most tasteful way possible - at least attempt to preserve some of the storytelling intentions that Leia was meant to service.  Given that we won't have a picture of what those intentions are until we see VIII, I think most of the speculation is kind of pointless until then.

I agree. I've said all I care to on that particular subject and more than I intended to.

I wish they'd drop a teaser or a title or something so we could shift the conversation elsewhere..

Actually, from what we already know, it's not too difficult to extrapolate the broad strokes of what they had planned for Leia in EPISODE IX. Lead the Resistance, salvage what's left of the Republic, and try to save her son.

I'll be doing my damndst to avoid teasers and trailers this time.

I'm happy to continue spinning my wheels until December.

Perhaps Barry can post more random pictures of actresses within 20 years either way of Carrie Fisher's age.

I think her being recast would be way, way more distracting than just writing her out with some plot exposition or off screen death, but that's just me.

Billie Lourd, Carrie Fisher's daughter, is said to be playing a substantial role in EPISODE VIII as Lieutenant Connix, Leia's right hand. What if they set up a scenario that leaves Connix in charge of the Resistance with the spirit of Leia as her guide?

I was just going to say... that's where this is headed. Barry has a crush.

At least he's not demanding that Anthony Ingruber play Leia.

He did. But he then edited it out seconds after posting.

It makes all kinds of sense. The government of the Republic has been wiped out and the Resistance is hanging on by a thread. If Leia's out of the picture, none of the other characters could easily take her place story-wise.

If we ever stop hearing from Barry completely one day, it probably meant the girl in his basement in the metal bikini got loose and strangled him with her shackles..

So when does Marvel announce Taylor Swift as Ms. Marvel?
Rewrite/reshoot the last couple of minutes of VIII so that it ends with Kylo Ren making a vow to hunt down and kill his mother.

Start IX with Leia undergoing a face transplant to disguise herself from her son.

Solved.

Now we can FINALLY move on to discussing the far, FAR more important matter of whether or not Rian Johnson GETS Star Wars enough to have righted a terrible, TERRIBLE wrong committed by the shoddily-made Episode VII by having Leia and Chewie hug in Episode VIII.

the opening of IX set to 'Eyes Without A Face'
