TFA did huge BO but then dropped like any other blockbuster. AVADAR played for months and then was re-released to make even more money. ADVANTAGE: AVADAR!

I don't even remember it getting a re-release.

It was for the extended edition, which gave us this subtle image.

The extended version played in theaters?  I thought that was a home video thing only.

I feel like Poe is the character who will benefit most from the alleged rewrites.

Lightsabers, Dameron, action!

I know. Even I was like "okay, Cameron, we get it, you love the color blue soooo much!"

Will Benicio Del Toro's character in EPISODE VIII have blue hair!?

Why are people so fucking obsessed with having new characters ACTUALLY be other characters because TWIST?

I've seen a million "Snoke is actually X" or "Rey is really Y" posts around the internet since the movie came out.

And now a character we have literally no information about, is supposedly the kid from Rebels because reasons?

Are people physically incapable of thinking of movies without twists anymore?

Anyway, Phasma definitely survived the trash compactor.  Will return in Ep 8.  And is in all likelihood, not related to any previous characters.

All these Star Warring threads are like the forum equivalent of M. C. Escher drawings.

Pretty much. We're in that age where fandom tries to think ahead of things, as if figuring out a twist before it happens makes one more enlightened. If BATMAN BEGINS came out today instead of 2005, I bet a lot of people would have somehow come to the conclusion that Liam Neeson was actually playing Ra's al Ghul. I mean, when Marion Cotillard's character was revealed to be Miranda Tate on a news bit, fans immediately jumped to the conclusion that she was Talia al Ghul. People already knew Kylo Ren was Han and Leia's son.

Which kinda makes me wish that Rey will be revealed that she has no lineage with the Skywalkers or whatever, that she really is just some random girl. But the fact that Abrams just keeps bashing audiences' heads with "HER BACKGROUND IS A MYSTERY, THERE'S A TWIST AHEAD" kind of implies that whatever it is was intended to blow our minds, or at least in the way J.J. hoped like he hoped John Harrison IS Khan would. Hopefully Johnson looks at that and just goes "aw, fuck it, there is no twist!".

Rey as just some girl, with her background clearly not important and not a mystery was clearly the way to go.

When confronted with what was wrong with jurassic world he had q really grown up adult response about realizing the difference between intentions and execution.

I might have hated that movie, but at least he's man enough to want to get better. I at least respect him for that. We'll see.

Pass.

I think references to parts of the EU that are going to be made canon (of which there have been quite a few) are largely going to stick to Rebels, and maybe the anthology films (I'll seriously be shocked if Kyle Katarn isn't a character or at least referenced in Rogue One, considering Gary Whitta is an ex-PC Gamer UK writer). They're not going to be in the main saga.

Star Wars Rebels is going to have as much impact on the movies as Agents of SHIELD has on the Marvel Movies.

Meaning fuck all.

Dude, you're going to look SO damned stupid when the next movie arrives and Benecio Del Toro is playing that furry green guy with the Australian accent from the show!

Well, looks like principal filming has begun.  This should wrap up in what, 3-5 months?  Maybe 6?  So that's nearly a year and a half of post-production?  I mean .... unlimited budget, absolutely zero time crunch, that can't happen very often.

They'll have zero excuses if it turns out looking like shit.

Yeah. Johnson had a year and a half of pre-production (from June 2014 until now) and probably a year and a half of post.  That's a pretty great schedule to be on.

There was a terrific article in this month's Vanity Fair about Kathleen Kennedy (where, among other things, she mentions she really wants Tony Kushner to write a SW film).  According to the article, everyone at Lucasfilm is raving about Rian.  Hopefully they're right.

Official announcement and video. Looks like the second Skellig Michael shoot from a few months back. If this film literally picks up from where the last one left off it will be the shortest ever narrative gap between episodes to date.

Plus, Laura Dern???

Holy fuck Luke in that video looks fucking awesome. Fuck I want Luke back now!!!!!!

I'm guessing they're just unused alternate angles from Awakens rather than new footage, but either way, dig the profile shot.

No, they actually went back for a second time and reshot the end scene for the start of ep8, with extra dialogue etc.

Yah, they did that a little while ago.

It does make you wonder what the hell the opening scrawl will say.

Yes, in September. For conservation and weather reasons. I know a few people who worked on the shoot.

wow dern!!!

Was aware of the shoot there, just didn't think they'd release actual new footage so soon, even if it's a rehash.  But that profile does feel decidedly un-Abrams, so, who knows.  That approach could be an interesting opening shot, though.  Tilt down from the crawl/space to that, and we're back with Luke and Rey.

First two paragraphs set up where the galaxy is going in a larger context - what the First Order is up to, what the Resistance is up to, etc.  Then the third paragraph goes into something like “Meanwhile, in a far off system, a young woman has ventured to the location of the first JEDI TEMPLE, in hopes of learning the ways of the Force from the last living Jedi…”  You can make the passage of time (or lack thereof) vague enough to still set the table in the crawl.

Yeah, but then it's just telling us all stuff we already know. Which isn't so bad, I guess, just kinda weird.
First scene is Luke rooting through his cupboards.

"I wish you'd have let me know you were coming. I haven't got much in I'm afraid."
You know it's not an Abrams film when they release a video like that. I wonder how lenient they'll be about doing videos like this, releasing behind the scenes video blogs while not giving too much away. Just enough to whet our appetites.

If it does pick up immediately from the end of VII, they'll maybe use it to do a bit of worldbuilding, something that'll quickly clear up the nebulously defined geography of Ep VII.

The galaxy is in chaos. Having murdered the leadership of the New Republic, the once fledgling FIRST ORDER has revealed a hidden starfleet, built in the decades since the Battle of Endor. System after system has fallen under the control of the mysterious SUPREME LEADER SNOKE.

Yeah, exactly, world building.

Having been struck a devastating blow by a small resistance force, the First Order scrambles to regroup in order to get revenge.  General Leia Organa Solo, using the obliteration of the Republic as a rallying cry draws allies to her cause.  Meanwhile, Rey having found Luke Skywalker, takes her first steps towards a larger world....

Seems like the first order had poured everything they had into Starkiller Base, and we only saw the one cruiser, but I do like the idea of a secret fleet out there.  Sorta like the second Thrawn novel.

Secret WOOKIE fleet

Come on Rian, make it so!
