It doesn't.

It just wouldn't really work. All the emotional and dramatic power they'd hope to get by using Leia would go out the window.

Some of you are being more precious about this than Carrie herself would be.

You're right, let's just Tarkin her up. Cuz it won't be distracting at all.

Or, recast the role.

Tilda Swinton as Leia!
Yeah, let's get Stevie Nicks!

Cause she kinda looks like Carrie.

Precious is a hell of a word for you of all people to be tossing around.

Tell me, right here, that your first thought upon news of her passing wasn't "OH NOES! MY STAR WAR MOOBIES!!"

They didn't write Dumbledore out of the Harry Potter movies when Richard Harris died, they brought in Michael Gambon.

That's not even comparable.

Sure it is, I just did.

We need to stop normalizing Barry.

If you support recasting Leia in Episode 9, you support corporations over art.
Is this a parody thread now?
Sure.

I'm just saying, they recast or digitally pull a Tarkin I will boycott.

So hold me to it. January 5, 2017 at 6:40 pm I threatened to boycott Episode 9.

Yes, I am better than you.

The rather prevalent rumor about Episode VIII is that Leia ends up in a coma.

So, y'know... setting aside the real-world tragedy of losing that awesome woman, you rewrite the film and reshoot so that Leia doesn't recover. Writers could deepen the drama by having it be Ren who called the attack that put her in the coma. Or have him lose his shit when he finds out about her death, a la Loki in The Dark World. We know he hated Han and thought that killing him would make it easier for him to embrace the Dark Side. We don't know what his relationship was with Leia, other than the fact that she felt she lost him when she sent him to train with Luke, and he felt abandoned or shunned. Her being gone could be a powerful moment, and Adam Driver would knock it out of the park.

There's some moving stuff you could do with Luke being at her side while she's in the coma, what with Jedi telepathy. There's a million ways to make the character's passing heartbreaking and give the character worthy closure without needed Fisher present, or rolling out some CGI creation.

I would wager that, despite how important and iconic Princess Leia is to the franchise as a whole, we're inevitably heading for a confrontation between Luke and Rey against Ren, regardless of whatever steps are necessary to get there. Losing both Han and Leia in the process would be devastating for Luke, and he's bound to be the heart of these next two movies.

Episode IX: The Force Is Unresponsive

Every single solution is going to be distracting 'cause we're privy to the process.  CGI, recast, restructured film... all of it is going to be noticeable, no matter how good of a job they do.

I'm for whatever is best for Leia as a character.  She's one of the most important characters in all of cinema.  Don't just retire her off screen.  Which I guess tentatively puts me on team recast if there isn't any dramatic resolution to her story in Episode VIII.

Quick thought... if she really is injured in VIII and ends up in a coma, maybe now she doesn't wake up until IX, and her reunion with Luke and/or Ben is what finishes the story?

Bart, will you lend me your sword? Shall we sack and pillage Anaheim and burn the Mouse to the ground?

Kylo's gotta get got. That fucker killed Han Solo right in front of Chewie. You don't get a happy ending after that shit.

I'm willing to bet money that you do.  Kylo's being set up for a redemption arc.

We are the two that haven't seen Rogue One. It's possible, people.

Fictional characters are not real. They're brought to life by people. Writers, directors and most importantly actors.

Be loyal to the people, not the characters.

I wouldn't argue with this if you were railing against a CGI puppet, but recasting?  Come on.  You're saying you'll throw a temper tantrum if Disney prioritizes telling a story instead of shoving a character off-stage because you can't handle it.

Not a temper tantrum. I simply won't watch it.

That's about the most passive form of resistance, fellas.

Let's just see where things are left standing after we see the finished film. A lot to speculate on but we don't even know the general plot synopsis of Episode VIII, let alone IX.

I recall similar concerns after Heath Ledger died before The Dark Knight opened and as it turned out, they managed to work around that just fine with The Dark Knight Rises.

Walt Disney Studios is in Burbank. The theme park is in Anaheim.
What if something terrible happens to Leia and they put her in a Vader-like suit where you can't see her face. We'll all know it ain't Carrie, but they won't be using her likeness so they can continue with the story.

Everybody happy? Bart will Disney get your $12 or will they have to file for bankruptcy?

Tricky bastards. Well, we can blaze a trail of destruction to wherever their little necromancer cult has its black Masses.

No. But if knowing you contributed $12 to some faceless CEO's annual trip to Brazil to fuck little boys helps you sleep at night, more power to you.
Bart, I know you're probably not sleeping well these days, but...?

Just don't worry about me. If I boycott I boycott, what's the big deal?

But hold me to it. Somebody take a screenshot or something.

We're in this together, Bart.

Sorry, mate. We can't finish your house because the guy pouring the foundation passed on, sudden like. He was everyone's favourite cement truck driver. Like royalty, he was. We couldn't possibly keep on because it would disrespect the memories we have of other people's houses. Nobody's building here for a good long while, as is proper.

So Bart would be okay with financing a studio executive's sex tourism under ordinary circumstances?
I mostly get movies from the library. So I guess my taxes pay for adolescent sex trafficking.

And I really liked that cement truck driver.

Meryl Streep has played Carrie Fisher before. She's also a pretty good actor.

Frankly it'd just be rude if the solution isn't that they recast Leia with her.
Easy question, boyos.

If Mark Hamill drops dead right now, do they recast Luke for Episode 9?

Sure.

Ew.

As opposed to writing the character out between movies and derailing your entire narrative?

Yes. Fuck the movie.

Are you also really mad that Wedge is played by three people in the original Star Wars?  Or that different people played Vader depending on whether he was walking or fighting?

You seem to be under the weird assumption that recasting the part as a desperation move for the story would be disrespectful to the actor.

Wedge is not Luke or Leia. People covered in costumes are not the same and you know it.

You guys don't know why you like the things you like.

I'm not talking about what Disney does for their bottom line. I'm talking about the moral thing.

Or are you a Disney stockholders?

So it's okay so long as you're not attached to the character or you can't see the difference.  Got it.

Yes, and that's why your POV is so fascinating to me.  Recreating the actor with CGI?  I can see that being a moral thing.  Simply recasting the role?  It's theater with cameras.  Lighten up.
