Shit, between the two of them, quite a large number of fans were assuming that Domhnall Gleeson was going to be the lead and Luke Skywalker's son.

Wait....two new STAR WARS films have featured ethnically diverse casts with women placed front and center for the first time...and there are complaints that it's not diverse enough...?
Star Wars has always been ethnically diverse.

Or have you all forgotten Chewbacca? Racists.
And if they follow up on Finn getting his spine sliced out they could have one of the leads in Ep VIII as a black guy in a wheelchair!

I do wonder how significant Finn's injury is going to be in Episode VIII.

2 *white women. Baby steps.

Perhaps if it turns out that gay is Rey. A Progessive Star Wars Story.

I like the cyborg spine idea.

Johnson expands a little bit more here:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2017/01/09/star-wars-episode-viii-rian-johnson-mark-hamill/96351428/

Mostly, again, really emphasizing that the heart of the film is going to be the Rey/Luke storyline, and his interest in figuring out what would most challenge each of Rey, Finn, and Poe, and putting that at the center of each one of their storylines (which says... nothing, really). Also, it does have a title, but he's not telling us yet.

Star Wars: All In Good Time My Friend

I have this feeling Johnson wants the title to be revealed on the trailer.

Which will hit the morning of April 13th - the first panel of Star Wars Celebration 2017.

It'd be hard to top "Chewie, we're home," but if the final shot of that trailer is Jedi Master Luke igniting the green lightsaber, the Internet is going to break in a microsecond.

He also says in there that we wants the movie to be "fun" and a "blast."  Some may interpret that as undercutting everyone's assumption that VIII would be a "darker" installment, but I'm not so sure.  EMPIRE is a "darker" episode (though really I'd say it's just more emotionally mature than it is truly dark), but it's still a ton of fun.

I just can't imagine Disney waiting all the way until April to start selling the film.  Why drop two huge revelations (the title and the trailer) at the same event when they could space them out and get twice the amount of glowing press?

I also can't imagine we're not getting something in front of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.  Perhaps an atmospheric teaser (sans title) to prime the fans for Celebration a month later, where a full trailer (plus title) would arrive...

My complaint was that Finn seemed to be a less than ideal protagonist, as he is always needing saving and seems there to keep Rey's lightsaber warm for her.  And Rey is an underwritten embarrassment.  I don't remember hearing the rule where you can't complain because you have a diverse cast.  That is veering dangerously close to "what more do you people want?!"  Not talking about you specifically, but just something to keep in mind.

The Force Awakens had its first teaser in November 2014 and its second teaser in April 2015.

Episode 8 is lagging behind!

TFA teaser came out just after Thanksgiving 2014, more than a year before the release date.  April is 8 months before Ep.8 comes out.  I can MAYBE see them waiting until then, but I find it hard to believe they wouldn't drop some kind of tease before that, as we are long out of the shadow of R1, so any concern with overshadowing that film should be moot.

EDIT: Bartleby beat me to it.

They don't need to release anything, really. Hell, they could withhold all marketing until Thanksgiving and this thing will be huge, due to it being Star Wars and Fisher's death increasing interest.

That said, I bet we'll get something no later than the Superbowl.

They don't need to, but I want them to.

So get on it already.

We all bitch and joke about this, but a friend of mine - a guy I've known since childhood - went on a dead-serious rant last year about Rey being a lead character. "Star Wars is for BOYS!" he declared with utter Republican sincerity. I didn't really push it, but I almost recommended that he take the conversation up with my daughters, who might have some problems with his desire to make SW all male, all white, all the time.

Yes, I've said this before, but carpetbombing ads of already established franchises seems like a waste of money, but studios indulge heavily in promoting sequels even more than the last one.  So Disney being Disney, I kind of expect them to start ramping up the promotional campaign for Ep.8 sooner than mid April, if TFA was any indication.

Ah, the ol' friend who turns out to have skeletons (of former misogynists and slave owners) in his closet.  No offense of course!

Superbowl, February 5, sounds about right. Probably a brief teaser. Then a longer one in front of Beauty and the Beast, March 17? Or Guardians 2, May 5?

I just hope they don't end the trailer on a shot of Leia, effectively using the loss of Fisher to sell the movie. I'd like to think they wouldn't..... but you never really know, do you?

Forgot about Superbowl.  I would be surprised if they ignore it.

But Superbowl is important! It's when all of the movie trailers come out, and there's usually a commercial that everyone talks about, and I think there's also a live performance on that day. Not sure what else happens. Think someone might throw a funny-shaped ball around occasionally but nobody cares about that. Trailers! Music! Commercials! SUPERBOWWWWWL!

My only reservation with the Superbowl idea is that Lucasfilm might see it as too crowded and want to keep the "specialness" of Star Wars by dropping something when there's no other traffic.  I'd argue Star Wars has already lost it's specialness but Lucasfilm obviously doesn't think that.

Not sure if this already got reported, but Adam Driver was on Larry King and dropped some juicy tidbits about Kylo Ren in Ep.8

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Driver said fans will see more of Ren's "humanity" in the upcoming sci-fi film.
Driver was also asked if Ren survives Episode VIII, to which he responded, "Depends on what you're idea of living is..."

Oooooohhh..

I'm guessing the R1 blu-ray will be out early by April - Ep VIII marketing will begin shortly after that.

None taken! He's a good guy but due to personality and a long time working with other conservatives, it's kinda tough getting a message through.

Can you look into your crystal ball and tell us if the movie will be any good?

Star Wars Celebration is April 13 - 16. There's a trailer dropping then for sure.

So...teaser at the Superbowl, full trailer for Celebration?

The first full trailer for TFA premiered at the 2015 Celebration, so I expect the same this time around.

Between that, the 40th anniversary of Star Wars, and Carrie Fisher's passing, it should be a pretty memorable event.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
What Driver is hinting at is that by the end of the movie he's so badly damaged that he needs a pressure suit to survive, like his mentor...  that would an interesting parallel, since they've already starting sharing similar scarring...

Hey, Old Anakin doesn't have the scar on the right side of his face that Young Anakin does.

Way to go, George. You've ruined Star Wars all over again.

It's like poetry, they rhy- hey, that scar is all wrong.

And the first Rogue One trailer was that same week in April as well.

I could maaaaaybe see a title announcement in March, but I would definitely say trailer in April.

Isn't it wonderful the way our years are broken up?

Wishing away months until April for maybe a teaser. Then wishing away months until comicon where there'll definitely be a trailer. Then SuperBowl and Thanksgiving where'll there'll be TV spots.

Can't wait. Can't wait to buy more product.

Then the hypes train begins again the next year.

Wishing away.

Wishing away.

Choo choo...

I seriously doubt anything for VIII will be at the Super Bowl. Disney will probably want to sell BATB, Pirates, and/or Guardians 2 there. if they have teasers for anything.

Has Star Wars had Super Bowl stuff in the past or something?

I don't think so - certainly not for the Disney December releases, but I don't think even the PT did anything at the Super Bowl.

Don't the studios use the Oscars now for new film trailers during commercials?  If the SB isn't on ABC this year, why not the Academy Awards which Disney has ties to?

They did show the (full) Ep. VII trailer at halftime on Monday Night Football last season (on Disney-owned ESPN).

Though both will have big audiences, the Super Bowl will have far more eyes watching it than the Oscars will.

All the sexist and racist ranting about Rey, Finn and Jyn were delicious to read. So much pent up nerd rage.
