The Ballad of the Oregon Militia

I know there's a discussion of them in the Gun Forum but these special people deserve a thread all their own. To recap...

Armed militia men led by Aamon Bundy secure an unoccupied wildlife sanctuary

72 hours later, they send out a call for supplies including food and socks.

One of its members goes AOL and drinks away the militia's funds.

We find out these "patriots" benefit from government assistance.

The mom of one of the militia men send out a call to send them food and cigarettes.

One of the leaders of the the militia posts a rant on Facebook about getting sent a bag of dicks

And the list goes on..

As hilarious as all this is, it's hard for me to accept how long this situation has been allowed to go on. Power hasn't been cut off, phones haven't been cut off, and (judging from the bag of dicks) the mail hasn't been cut off. There is not one doubt in my mind that this would have been over by now if these simple steps happened.

Why are we tolerating this and when will somebody drop the hammer on them?

I'm sending them fleshlights and awaiting an angry response video...

(3 weeks later)

And....still nothing.

Based on what this Oregon ex-pat has heard, it sounds like it's a combination of mild local sympathy with the cause the occupiers are claiming to espouse (while still opposed to their methods and the fact that they're almost all outsiders), and the extreme fear on the part of law enforcement of risking another Ruby Ridge/Waco incident. So caution seems to be the name of the game.

Man, just cut off power and Internet and mail, wait three days, then have a big cookout right outside. No bullets need be fired.

I fucking love this country.  I really, really do.  I scoff a lot at people claiming to clearly know the intent of the Founding Fathers in all respects, but you can't tell me that this isn't precisely the sort of thing John Adams envisioned for the First Amendment to guarantee.

Is there any way to make these people like, ANTI-folk heroes? Is that a thing? Can we sing songs for years to come that revel in their embarrassment, stupidity and failure?

Leader of Oregon occupation Ammon Bundy, at least 8 others detained

...but what of all the dildos?

What state should they go to? Nobody wants them!

Officials said it all began with a traffic stop while Bundy and some of his followers were en route to a community meeting in John Day, about 70 miles away.

This has been the most limp-dicked police stand-off ever. Is County Sheriff an elected position there?

Yup.

It offends me that people keep calling these guys Vanilla ISIS when I thought we were agreed they should be called Y'all Qaeda.

Yokel Haram is also accepted.

It works well since both groups seem to be completely against Western education.

The man who died in the shootout was Robert Finicum, who had made headlines earlier when he gave an interview from a firing position under a blue tarp. Finicum said then that he was ready to die rather than face arrest.

ETA: Two eyewitnesses who were taken into custody with the secessionists and then released are already reporting, on Facebook videos, that Finicum's vehicle had crashed into a snow bank after trying to flee the scene and that he was charging the authorities on foot when he was shot down. In a pretty succinct example of how exploitation by chickenhawks works within the militia movement, two people who were not there, rancher Cliven Bundy and Arizona state legislator Michele Fiore, are already using Twitter to spread a fiction that Finicum was executed by the authorities after he had surrendered peacefully.

It's never going to stop the "truther" style idiocy, but I REALLY hope there's conclusive dashcam footage of how that went down just to deny these idiots any potential ammunition.

Haven't they already made overtures about how they would "defend themselves if necessary" (not actual quote) should their little uprising actually pit them against law enforcement?  When you make public statements like that and the Feds find you armed, I'm guessing it's not going to take much more than a nervous twitch to get yourself lawfully shot.

If you're interested in updates I suggest following @leszaitz on twitter. He's the Oregonian's reporter in the area, and has been covering the occupation.

Also Oregon Public Broadcasting's Think Our Loud program interviewed the now-deceased Militant several times, including yesterday afternoon.

Aaand there's a live stream from the compound. Aaaand its being riffed on by twitter folks, who are clearly MST4K fans:

FBI has released the video showing the events leading to and then, the shooting of Finicum.  Good move, I say as this ends the whole attempt at making him a martyr.

This won't stop the tinfoil hat brigade from seeing what they want to see in the video.....<cough> 9/11<cough>

In the video Fincum is clearly reaching for a sidearm when he gets dropped by an agent who has been camping the edge of the road block.  I'm glad to see that the FBI easily outmaneuvered several of America's most high-profile terrorist in one ambush, and I'm also glad that Bundy ran his mouth lying about being "peaceful", because it limits his credibility.  Clearly the FBI was on top of shit the whole time, and I feel silly for ever doubting they'd tie a nice bow on this thing.

It'll be fascinating to see people who think it's acceptable to shoot unarmed black men because they look threatening try to explain why shooting a white man visibly reaching for a weapon against a federal agent is some kind of outrage.

Having read the thoughts of several such people last night, I can assure you there's nothing fascinating about it.

I've already seen conspiracy theorists going over the video like it's the Zapruder film on sites like Disinfo.com, trying to find something that will exhonerate Tarp Man and indict the authorities for shooting him. I've yet to hear a consiray theory that explains why they would execute one defenseless man and take the eye witnesses in alive, if martyring the secessionists was their supposed goal.

Here's an elected politician who's joined the tin foiled-fight:

http://www.rawstory.com/2016/01/republican-who-compared-lavoy-finicum-to-jesus-claims-public-would-care-if-he-wasnt-white

Between the occupiers complaining that African-American protestors were somehow treated better than them to stupid claims like this, I'm just hoping this whole story goes away as quickly as possible.

I just watched the video. Tarp Man got a hell of a lot more leeway than Tamir Rice got despite publically saying "you'll never take me alive copper" a few days before.

FBI began circling the refuge earlier..or rather, early Wednesday evening. Cliven Bundy has been arrested and is sitting in a Multnomah County jail cell.

They're finally shutting these assholes down.

Cliven Bundy's arrest is particularly hilarious, to me. He's facing conspiracy and weapons charges, probably over the 2014 standoff on his property, and was picked up at an airport in Oregon when he flew there to visit his son in jail talk the four remaining squatters into giving up milk the situation for publicity.

ETA: Daily Beast is reporting that the last of them have announced their intention to turn themselves in to police custody at 8 AM Pacific Time today (that's in an hour and a half, as I post this).

10:04AM and from what I read in The Oregonian, they're STILL THERE. Goddammit.

ETA: Only nutcase David Fry remains. And he's "feeling suicidal".

They've all surrendered, apparently.  And that's a wrap.

Crooks And Liars has a full transcript of Cliven Bundy's indictment. The charges include "Conspiracy to Commit An Offense Against the United States; Assault on a Federal Law Enforcement Officer; Use and Carry of a Firearm In Relation to a Crime of Violence; Obstruction of the Administration of Justice; Interference with Commerce by Extortion; and, Aiding and Abetting."

One commenter below the article deserves a prize: he said, "Looks like him and his kids will get their wish to live rent free on federal property after all."

The one downside to all this will be that he will become deified in the eyes of all those adult children playing army.

Not half as much as if he'd gotten his dumb ass killed, though.
It's really kind of a shame that Bundy is probably too racist to become prison pen pals with Mumia Abu-Jamal.

I haven't confirmed this myself but from what I understand, Cliven Bundy has requested a public defender for his legal problems...you know, the kind of lawyer that is paid for by tax revenue.
I wonder if CB knows what 'irony' is?
I know the fucker was denied bail, and will stew in jail until his trial date. That's absolutely the right call on the court's part. There's no way that Bundy was going to report to the courthouse peacefully for his trial without another armed standoff.

I was unaware at just how terrible of a rancher Cliven Bundy really is:

http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-ff-bundy-bad-rancher-20160218-story.html

Unfortunately, while Bundy sits behind bars, his cattle (well, the state's cattle, technically) are fending for themselves and starving:

One of the last militants to leave will get to stay at home while waiting for his trial:

http://www.rawstory.com/2016/05/ashamed-oregon-militant-released-from-jail-despite-berserk-bloodbath-rant-after-sheriff-vouches-for-him/

Also, there's this mother who forced most of her children to sing for the militants.  Her children escaped and went to the police because of her abuse:

http://www.rawstory.com/2016/05/mom-who-took-kids-to-sing-for-oregon-militants-claims-biblical-right-to-beat-her-children-bloody/

One of her daughters witnessed the death of LaVoy Finicum and said that the federal government "murdered" him, despite the video showing otherwise.

Bill Keebler, a Cliven Bundy-supporting militiaman, was arrested for a plot to blow up a Bureau of Land Management building in Arizona:

http://www.seditionists.com/keebler1.pdf

Here's an article on Keebler:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/06/23/1541779/-Utah-militia-commander-arrested-for-plotting-to-blow-up-a-Bureau-of-Land-Management-building

Quote:

Prosecutors say undercover FBI agents became members of Keebler's Patriots Defense Force for several months. Keebler gave them military, firearms and survival training, and on May 15, 2015, talked to the undercover agents about "putting teams together and 'going on the offensive,'" the indictment states.

Keebler allegedly scouted out the BLM office in Salt Lake City near The Gateway shopping center, but decided to target BLM facilities in more remote locations. He then decided on the BLM facility in Mount Trumbull, Arizona, police say.

He had one of the undercover agents make a pipe bomb for him, the charges state.

"Keebler made it clear he didn't plan on blowing people up for now, but he wanted his group to be prepared to escalate things and take people out if necessary," according to the indictment.

Radical Keeblerism!

Not guilty.  All counts.
