DOOM (2016)

Thread Starter

Daddy's back...

We have a release date. May 13th.

We also have a brand spanking new campaign trailer to go with it.

It should be noted that Machine Games, who gave us one of the best FPS's in recent memory with Wolfenstein: The New Order, helped fine tune the shooting mechanics.  So it should be pretty tight and really fun.

The whole remake is justified by being able to rip a Cacodemon's eye out with your bare fucking hands.

Obligatory...and more relevant than ever before by the look of things:

One day, when omnipotent aliens put all of humanity on trial, they will say, "Your species has been guilty of greed, war, bigotry, and genocide. How do you defend your existence?"

And humanity will say, "We made the DOOM comic."

And the aliens will turn around and go home, defeated.

I really want to play it, but I know it'll run like crap on my PC. I don't think the engine supports SLI.

I hope constantly doing those special melee things isn't mandatory. I'm still wondering if offscreen monsters are frozen in position or something while all that fancy crap is going on. Besides that, it looks badass...double miniguns.

No The Rock no buy.

"Kill 'em all.  Let God sort 'em out"

Just FYI, if you are on the Twitter, the DOOM page is taking votes for what the reverse sleeve art should be.

The options are this one:

And the CORRECT one:

I need that artwork as a Wallpaper pronto.

The fact that the second one isn't the actual cover is straight up horseshit. As someone who doesn't really do multiplayer anymore for several reasons, I am really stoked for this.

I do quite dig that first one - it's got kind of an 80s Black Metal album cover vibe to it. But to be sure, the second one is a thing of glory.

Aw, hell yeah.

I couldn't get into the closed Multiplayer beta but anyone that does should let us know how it is.

I'm in it but I couldn't get on a server last night. I'll try again this weekend.

Front end runs like dog shit, and is unskippable. So weird, I thought I was playing something off the Microsoft Store with how janky it launched.

Gameplay has a frame rate cap on pc so it just feels sluggish, with a perceptable amount of mouse lag when running around. The arena is dark and boring looking, I swear the lava map from 3ds hyrule legends had more definition.

Haha, okay, I'll tone down the hyperbole. The announcer isn't annoying but not Halo/UT2k4/Quake good, he's just there in his generic kind of way. Shotguns feel good as they should. Player models are just weird and don't seem Doom-ish.

My main problems is this was designed as a console game first and ported to pc without any customizability that takes advantage of my hardware efficiently. No FOV slider, the fuck? Running around killing people is mostly okay, but doesn't bring me back to the classic ID days of Quake and Quake 2. Running around could be a smidge quicker to get to where the action is.

Kind of meh to the beta, uninstalled it after an afternoon. Don't know if I'll bother with the mainline pc release now.

with this and Overwatch hitting in May, it is time to see if my twitch has any fast left.

What he said. I'd pay maybe $15 for a good single-player story mode.

The 4 matches I played were okay, about what was I expecting, which was to be just an ok shooter with purdy whizz bang modern graphics.  It was fun getting to play as an OP demon every so often.  The customizable armor though is too close to Halo armor.  I don't remember Doom Guy or the space marines in the other ones looking so like reject Spartans.

I have no interest in playing it again.  Maybe the single player will be better, but from what I've seen and read about it so far, that will most likely be just ok with shiny purdy modern graphics too.  Yeah it looks nice, but the gameplay looks so throwback that I see myself getting easily bored of it.  And the developers have said the it will be purposefully light on story, relying mostly on the tropes of environmental and audio logs.  Meh.

The best thing about this beta was that the code for it came free with my purchase of Wolfenstein: The New Order.  Now that had a great campaign.  2 technically.

If you couldn't tell, I was never big into arcadey arena shooters like Doom, Quake, or Duke Nukem.  My preferred first person shooter was always stuff like Deus Ex or Bioshock. I did really like both Half Lifes and Prey though.

Multiplayer looks like Halo 3 with blood spurts.  Community should be vibrant for a whole two or three weeks.

Is anyone really surprised? You can only do so much with DOOM at this point. Loved DOOM/DOOM II back in the day but they're not exactly reinventing the wheel here.

Yup. The beta's alright, I suppose... I'm not the biggest competitive online FPS guy in the world, so I tend to give these things the benefit of the doubt. I can see they're trying to go for an old-school feel like with the original, I just don't know if they've nailed it. And like mongy said, the character models look weird - more like offcut Spartans than anything Doom-y. Graphics are nice, I guess? It's hard to tell when the environment they chose is so bland.

Give me a good balls-out mental single-player campaign and I'm happy.

Hey, who are you calling mongy? Is that a new hip insult amongst the youth of today?

For those that missed this gameplay showing during last weeks Nvidia 1080 showcase. Singleplay looks so much better than that phoned in MP offering that they used for the Beta.

God fucking dammit.  This, Overwatch, Witcher 3's expansion, No Man's Sky in a month and I just bought Battlefleet Gothic: Armada.  FUCKING HELL GAMES I HAVE A LIFE YOU KNOW?!

That looks AMAZING!  Doom's never been a Multiplayer franchise so I don't rightly know why they half-assed an MP mode on this one.  Machine Games knows their SP shit.

Looks good but the embargo on reviews until launch day makes me think this game has problems besides the lacklustre multiplayer.

Ok!  Well, it looks like this has become an instant purchase for me.  Guess I'm buying less X-Wing models this month.

Bethesda's reasoning is that they want to wait until the game's servers are up and the MP is active enough to be reviewed fairly. They used the same tactic with Wolfenstein: TNO, and that game also turned out great.

Initial impressions after the first two hours of the campaign: fucking awesome. It's got the speed of classic Doom, the polish and dynamic animations of Rage and the 'glory kill' mechanic works surprisingly well, giving the game a bit extra tactical depth. You have your normal health/ammo pickups strewn about, but also need to weigh up the ease of just blasting demons against going for glory kills to keep your health topped up, or whipping out the chainsaw which generates extra ammo. It actually ends up being really fun, encouraging aggressive but methodical play. Also, it's smooth as butter and looks phenomenal, even on my ageing rig.

Also, I don't want to give it away but in the Foundry level, I highly recommend diving into the molten steel at least once. Something pretty damn cool happens.

Well that's encouraging to hear.
Looks like the Polygon dude is playing this on easy.

I'm surprised at just how good this is running on the xbox. Mostly, near-ish, 60 fps with some slowdown during more gibbier moments. On pc it is fucking aces blazing along, if you're on nvidia hardware.

Already found a couple of cool little easter eggs tucked away. SP stuff warrants a weekend redbox/gamefly rental. Too bad the mp is ass.

Yeah, as pretty as it looks. No one is going to drop $80 (Canadian) on this.

Remember the infamously hilarious Doom comic?
This game is exactly that.
And I love it.
Fast paced, bloody and all about skill, keeping moving and killing everything on sight.
This is pretty much what Doom 3 should had been, and by the looks of the story/references, it actually is.
Absolute worthy of its name and legacy.*

* Love that they updated enemy AI and level design in a way that modernizes the game but keeps the feel and gameplay of the original, making the action relentless.
So this isn't a cluster fuck? Because this had all the makings of cluster fuck.
Yeah, I'm honestly shocked by the complete 180 in people's opinions on this. In a good way, mind you, the world could really use another true DOOM game in this age of indistinguishable dingy khaki chest-high-wall simulators and other so-called "shooters," but still, holy cow.

It's essentially the same deal as the new Wolfenstein: it takes what made the original work, adds a fresh coat of paint and updates the mechanics a bit, but not at the cost of losing the spirit and feel of the original game.

You move fast, shoot demons non stop with a variety of weapons, explore a bit if you want in search of secrets, then go back to killing demons non stop.
You can upgrade your suit (meaning more ammo, damage resist and so on), and you can unlock mods for the guns that are essentially alternate fire modes, but that's it: it's all Doom, in its gory demonic carnage filled glory.
The only clusterfucks potential here are the melee kills (that you can turn off if you want, but they are fun and add a bit of a tactical aside to the killing) and the multiplayer, which is essentially doom/quake with some added powers and mechanics.
The map making tool seems to be amazing, and the potential for user created content is pretty huge.
In short, this is pretty much what Doom 3 should had been: a relentless, fun and gory FPS.
And the love/respect for the original is everywhere.

It's pretty much a huge fuck you to modern FPS, showing that classic gameplay never goes out of style.
Is it deep or complex? Nope, but it's the most fun I've had with a FPS in ages.

The one thing I saw in the Giant Bomb Quick Look is that the almost endless melee attacks could get old.  Perhaps they should have made that possible every third demon instead of practically every time.

Dude.

This game is so metal.

That whole bit when you fall into the lava

Holy shit. this tucking game.

As soon as that SLI patch is out, I'll be in there with you guys, at glorious Medium settings.

Get it for the consoles. ACCEPT MEDIOCRITY
post #40 of 65

Sorry broski, only got a Wii U.

I need my mouse aiming and my options tweaking, anyways. It's cool that it runs well on the consoles, though.

So metal is right.  When the guitar riffs kick in and I'm just wasting Imps with the Super Shotty...one of the best gaming moments I've had this year.

This game is a ton of fun.  The whole weekend's just been a carnival of gory demon viscera.  And I don't want it to end!

Between this and Overwatch we're doing pretty spectacularly on the FPS front.

The death animations are really something to experience.  Shit just dies so pleasingly here.  Whether it's crushing possessed skulls with your boot, or double-jumping to put a chainsaw through a Cacodemon's eye or the glorious symphony of gibbage unleashed by firing the BFG it's just so good to kill things.

Last night, I had a Hell Knight charging straight at me, so with my Gauss Cannon out, I charged up a Siege Mode shot and CUT THE FUCKER IN HALF!  His little legs still ran forward for a bit while his torso was flung back to die slowly with his arm extended to me.  And I was cackling like a blood crazed psychopath throughout.  And the game is just littered with these great little moments that make the violence so much fun.

Technology has finally caught up with the DOOM comic and does it justice.  If you've ever enjoyed an FPS, it behooves you to see the grandfather of the genre return to show everyone how it's done.  id Games has really knocked one out of the park here.

You should Jump into a freezing chamber's deadly floor as well.

I'm essentially clearing a level, then hunting down secrets before moving on, but it seems you need that double jump ability for some secrets/routes?

Better clear more levels.

And damn, finding the super shotgun secreted away in a level felt Gooooooooooooood.

I love this damn game.

I would pay good money for a Doom comic quotes mod for this game, specially force berserker pack moments alone.

But what voice actor could make the Doom comic's glorious dialogue justice?
Either Bruce Campbell or Kurt Russell.

Clancy Brown gets my vote.

The whole way Doomguy's characterised in this game is actually quite impressive, especially without uttering a single noise. Right up there with Gordon Freeman when it comes to silent protagonists. This gets even better when you find out more of his history.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
You essentially freeze to death but manage to take a couple steps, breaking your legs into pieces, like the T-1000 in Terminator 2

Or you could just revisit a level with an cryogenic room? There is mission select in the game.

Also, it's not exactly the same scene as in the movie, but the reference is there; you freeze and shatter into pieces Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Lol, I know.  Just looking forward to the prospect of playing it again after I finish it because it's just SO FUCKING FUN!

I really want to get all those Classic DOOM maps.  Only stumbled across one so far for the whole game.  I usually never 100% a game because finding collectibles usually bores me but this one I'm really tempted to get everything.
