Kanye West LP7

Anyone interested in this? Supposedly it comes out on Friday, but you wouldn't know it from the ever changing title and tracklisting, and the reports that he's still working on it.

There already seems to be a vague air of disappointment surrounding it, not so much because anyone expects it to be bad but because for the first time ever it seems like he's putting out an album that isn't trying to do anything except collect a few new tracks. A lot of people didn't like Yeezus, but there's no denying that album was an in-your-face statement.

This time around he's been dripping out songs for a year ranging from sort of iffy to pretty good, but with none of them sounding like any kind of mission statement. I dunno, maybe he's too into making shoes to want to achieve much with records now?

Apparently none of those songs that he's been leaking are going to make it into the final album. I felt the same exact way during the lead up to Yeezus. And then, well, Yeezus happened.  Trust in Yeezy.

I'm going to embrace my inner Grandpa Simpson and say "I think Kanye is a highly overrated entertainer".

Now I know music taste is entirely subjective but I don't think his music is all that special in the grand sense of the music industry.

Maybe it's a generational thing but can someone explain his appeal?

Well no one has to like him. But his early productions are pretty much timelessly great, with a fantastic ear for samples and clever arrangements. Case in point.

I wasn't following him early on but if you think of the kind of macho gangsta posturing that was standard in early 00's hip hop and then think of how Kanye could put out humble little tunes like this under his real name and actually be more successful, you can see how he changed the game for the better. If you can make it through the first five or six tracks of College Dropout without conceding that he had it going on, I don't know what to say.

And then after that he just kept evolving and changing up his sound, putting out a dopey synth pop ballad album and then an epic prog hop album and then an electro punk hop album. He's just highly entertaining figure to follow. I won't use the 'genius' tag that he attaches to himself, but do I think he has genuine vision.

Yup. I always ask people who claim to hate or don't understand Kanye's popularity if they've ever listened to his "College trilogy." That's a really good way to gauge how I'll respond to them. Without a doubt Kanye's entry from the early to mid 00s are some of the best in hip-hop during that period. But his MBDTF is straight-up a fucking perfect masterpiece and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.

Okay, with one day to go it now has the enigmatic title The Life Of Pablo and the tracklisting looks like this:

So all of the previously released songs are missing except Real Friends and Wolves, a couple of dark, atmospheric tracks that should make for a solid ending. Also there's a live bootleg of Fade on youtube that sounds pretty cool. The fact they cut a decent track like No More Parties In LA suggests confidence in the rest, which is a mystery. Looking forward to this now!

Yeah. Me and my friends calling this day "Yeezy-Day" the day when our lord and savior, Yeezus, shone upon us and blessed us with such merciful gifts.

Praise be to Yeezy.

Yeezus saves.

Edit: Streaming here in an hour or two.

Listened to a bit before the stream crapped out on it. Definitely seems like a sequel to MBDTF--that ain't a bad thing.

Heard the whole thing and it has a 808s
Vibe to me. I'm not sure what to think. Have to hear it again, but on first listen it doesn't blow me away like MBDTF or anything before it.

On the supposed day of release it's now 17 tracks long:

Any bets on him changing the title again at least once? It's not too late!

It's still not out. What a shock! I think it's time to put this album in the "expect it when it's out" category and forget about it for now.

I listened to chunks of the stream and it seemed okay. With a few exceptions I'm not a big fan of his autotune stuff and there seemed to be a lot of it on there, but it seems like there's some good stuff on there. If he's going maximalist and even considering a dumb track like Facts he'd may as well stick All Day and Only One on there as well, why not?

Speaking of which, he's making a video game about his mother flying to heaven, because of course he is:

Okay it's out! Now with 18 tracks and with the worst cover of all time replaced with an even worse one. Not sure where to actually get it, though. I'm not signing up to Tidal.

Listened to it. It's good--it's real good. If there's any disappointment it's that it's not a complete evolution like MBDTF was from 808 or as completely bizarre as Yeezus was. It's solid Kanye. But solid Kanye is still pretty damn great.  Famous is a personal favorite of mine.

It's pretty much entirely solid except for the occasional eye-rolling lyric that's pretty standard for Kanye at this point. My personal issue is that some of the styles in it are not to my personal taste (e.g. any time it goes into Trap territory with vocoder vocals), but a strength of the album is that nothing outstays it's welcome, if you don't like one thing something good and different will be along in about 30 seconds. Ultralight Beam is something special.

It's been suggested (even hinted at in one of the lyrics) that everything after Wolves is basically a bonus track, and either way they kind of feel like it - a little bit tacked on and not as well sequenced as the rest. I'm kind of amazed Facts made the cut.

Good album, he's still got it.

Edit: LOL he's now pulling it from release so he can tinker with it some more.

No fucking way. Holy shit, dude.

Is it bad that I kind of want him to keep going?

George Lucas syndrome! In fairness he says he's 'fixing' Wolves which I would say is weaker on the album than the earlier versions.

He's truly bats. On his Twitter feed right now he says he's 53 million in debt and is pleading with Mark Zuckerberg to back his big chart of ideas which includes stuff like holograms, wallpaper screens and his patented 'emoticon autocorrect':

Thing is I can't help but wish him every success, because honestly, how bonkers would Kanye West with a billion dollars be like?? He basically wants to be the new Steve Jobs, and good luck to the chap.

He really is bat shit crazy.  Who knows what to believe with this dude.  53M in debt because of a clothing line is proof point he needs someone to manage his money.  He married the right family to do so.

I like pablo, but I don't love it...yet.

Anything he does coming after MBDTF is going to be a slight let down.  That album is such a creative as hell masterpiece.  I just listened to it again last night and man....It's so damn great.

How well do you think this album is going to sell in the country of Africa?

My next album is titled   "Turbo Grafx 16"   as of now…

Interesting bit of trivia:

the Turbo Grafx 16 dropped in the US in 1989, read into that what you will

Eh, Kanye doesn't strike me as one to go for an indirect approach, chances are his 3-minute attention span got directed to old games and that was that. Based on his twitter he'll probably rename it "Will Ferrell Is God" next. Also if he actually releases another album this year I'll eat my hat.

Yeah. No way he will.

So the day after everyone's free 1 month Tidal trial ends, he updates the album restoring the best bits of Wolves that were originally left out for no reason. What an amazing coincidence!

He's made at least one major change to the album since this thread was last active.

I have to hand it to him though, it gets slightly better with each change - a flaw of the album was it just stopped abruptly, but now it has a solid closer with Saint Pablo.

Now all he needs to do is flesh out tracks like Waves and Fade so they don't feel quite so insubstantial.
