The Predator (pre-release) - Page 4

I think Dutch's warpaint scene and subsequent barritus, may just be the single most butch thing ever put on screen. The entire film is so over the top macho, it's a minor miracle that it achieves an incredible balancing act of being a smart genre film that never feels like a joke.

It's especially interesting that the film closes with Dutch completely drained and dead-eyed. Mere minutes before you watched him crank out a couple of one-liners whilst going toe-to-toe with a monster, yet McTiernan and Schwarzenegger sell that Dutch is in shock from his unprecedented experience.

It creates an unexpected gravity when you realize you're looking at a man who has lost all of his closest friends.

I love McTiernan just for how he inverts the classic 80's macho guy trope here. The first act is basically the climax to any Golan/Globus film where afterwards it basically turns into a slasher with said macho tough guys playing the roles of the teen victims. That goes a long way to making the characters feel more human and relatable despite this.

They cut out a large part of Dillion's death scene when they aired it on TV here in Singapore. He's just shown being shot by the Pred. The next cut is his death cry heard by Dutch.

The entire part of him trying to aim against the Pred with his arm blown off? Gone.

Are they cutting out the scene because you can see Carl Weathers' real arm under the severed one? :)

Think the best death is Mac's. That twitching foot still creeps me out.

Wish we got more mainstream Bill Duke.

Just realized after reading the last few posts about the pro macho aesthetic of the film( which leads into the dead eyed stare of the man that lost his friends) this film ends with an aircraft taking off...

...only to lead to McTiernans next film, Die Hard, of an aircraft landing.

And out comes a subverted version of the 80s action hero: The Everyman Mr. John McClane.

Awesome.

Clearly the "Cortana" analog should be female. ;p

What's great about the final third of the movie is how little dialogue there is and that the story is just told visually.
I like how completely organic and unobtrusive Elpidia Carrillo is as Mrs. Basil Exposition. She illuminates the antagonist's motivation and the other half of it, the "no sport rule", is established via Dutch making a reasonable deduction.

It's really screenwriting 101, but also a basis for further argument that Predator is a "perfect" movie. Three decades later, there's almost nothing in it that wouldn't work if it were made today.

I like to imagine Anna's conversation with the general once she gets to the chopper.

"Who the hell are you?"

"I'm Anna. Dutch told me to come find you."

"Dutch?! Where's Dutch?"

"Well, that's an interesting story..."

It looks like Oliva Munn is in talks to join the cast.  Prayed The Lord, I hope not.  With Del Toro gone, Boyd Holbrook isn't a dealbreaker for me.  But latest insight is that the setting is going to be in ''suburbia.''  Not sure about that but I trust Black and Dekker, haha.  Also, other tidbits of multiple Predators.

THE LAST BOYSCOUT was pretty much set in a suburbia setting and it was a hoot and a holler.  Time will tell if the new movie will involve a character kicking a Predator in the nards.

'Predators in suburbia' is...honestly, kind of cool.

What's he going to hunt?  Chubby dads who use hedge clippers?  Moms who use a knife to chop vegetables?

DEM GODDAMN MILLENIALS THAT'S WHAT!

If they do go that route it's probably going to be a Predator that crash lands in suburbia or something like that.

And then...maybe set it in the 70's...and have a certain duo of Private Investigators show up to investigate these strange disappearances in suburbia...

BAM! STEALTH NICE GUYS SEQUEL!

You guys should read the script for Black and Dekker's Shadow Company to see how they handle suburbia. Very Carpenteresque.
Predator meets ET meets Stranger Things.

Baby Predator crash lands in 1978 Midwest suburbia, kids hide him out in basement.

Predator parents (Predarants?) come to collect. Main kids cop Dad steps in to serve and protect, while ex partner now working for shadowy government agency needs baby Predator for experiments.

Hijinks ensue.

Hmm, the setting and casting announcement has me thinking that the film might be about how a special forces division tries to navigate a fantastical covert operation in plain-sight. This is all speculation coming from the fact that the two (suspected) lead characters have nothing to do with the supposed location.

Anyways, this is kind of, underwhelming? Munn is no bueno, and I really don't look forward to a sassy child outsmarting the Predator.

I have this script!

I haven't read it. But I do have it.

No you don't.

BUT I DO!

No, I bought it on eBay because I was like, "Hoy shit, an unproduced Shane Black script!"

Then I remembered how little I enjoy reading scripts.

You have a hardcopy?!

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu--

God, Jacob Tremblay is just the worst. The absolute worst. Eddie Redmayne of child actors worst. The rest of that cast is great, though!

Olivia Munn will be the Blaine of the group.

My eyes immediately roll each time I see Olivia Munn's name in a cast listing. I can't even control it; it's an involuntary reaction.

Feel the same way about Munn. Loved her on Attack of the Show.

Can't stand her now. Completely void of charisma.

Olivia Munn is great! Far better than Jacob Trumblee.

I guess Jane is playing the Predator because I can't find him in the cast photo.

Munn is excellent at being hot. Super talented.

Cast on this is pretty bad. If Black wasn't involved I would assume this would be even worse then Predators. We shall see I guess.

Dude, cloaking device.

Still trying to figure out who Munn is blowing to keep getting cast in anything.

Other than her it's an excellent cast.

It'd be great if Shane Black's mythical gf from the first film were in this.

Rape Culture up in here.

Yeah, let's just stick to what we know about her. We have no right to speculate on her dick sucking.

Just her performance blowing.
I guess you guys haven't seen "Office Christmas Party." She's pretty good in that, playing the most idealized love interest character since "There's Something About Mary."

The first cast photo doesn't inspire much confidence.  However, Trevante Rhodes seems to embody a certain energy and panache to his role.  Holbrook channeled a certain swagger for LOGAN and I know it's a just a photo.  Just going on by what I see.  This is what we fanboy/fangirl's do, right?!  Not sure about the comedy guy playing a badass.  We still have Thomas Jane and the Predators to judge.  If that lil' boy kicks a Predator in the nards, I'm throwing my popcorn & gummy bears in disgust at the screen come Feb 2018.

Also, reports in story say Holbrook's character is in Cuba during the first parts of story.  There had better be a reference to Val Verde somehow, someway.

Howbout speculation on shellfish and Ratner? Is that (to use a Predator motto) "fair game"?

If Ratner had anything to do with this movie, sure.  Thank God he doesn't.

Having just watched Logan where he was probably my favorite performance (which is no easy thing in a movie filled with strong performances), I'm incredibly excited by the presence of Boyd Holbrook in this.

Weird how I just saw this comment, when yesterday I was just bringing up Rat-Man's shrimp cocktail debacle in another thread!

Anyway, Edward James Olmos has joined the cast. That's all I came in here to say.

Jake Busey is going to play the son of Gary Busey's character from Predator 2.

When's the last time Jake Busey was in anything? Starship Troopers?

He was on the From Dusk Till Dawn TV series. He also co-stars later this year opposite Danny Trejo in DEAD AGAIN IN TOMBSTONE.

He'll always be the murderous ghost from The Frighteners to me.
