Hey this is NOT Michael Hoffman. This is Splat. I just watched Michael's movie and I know that several of you got copies as well. I think that feedback is a good thing, so I'd like to hear your comments. I personally emailed my critique to Michael and would like to know what you have to say.

I want to make sure that you know that the Bill that Mike is talking about in his posts, is the Bill from the movie and not me. Since I posted this topic, I thought that that could be confusing.

Okay here is my review:

Scary Tales is a film with three short stories and a wraparound story dealing with a guy going to an employment agency. Apparently at this employment agency they have the ability to see what might happen to one if they accept a particular job. The first story has to do with our potential employee doing a hit n run number on a little girl. This is on his way home from work which is the only thing the job has to do with this particular story. Overcome with guilt our hero starts to see dolls everywhere in his apartment. The scenes with the dolls have some nice creepy whispering that adds a nice effect. The story is not bad but it suffers from slow pacing and scenes that tend to drag.

The second story deals with our hapless unemployed hero finding a job a book store. Alas cupid strikes our man but he can’t quite seem to close the deal on a voluptuous vixen that frequents the bookstore. A book on astral travel may be the answer but things don’t turn out as planned. I really liked the set up of this story but it doesn’t have a strong enough ending to make it work. I especially liked the scenes with Jamie running down the beach in a bikini top in slo-mo, good stuff.

The third one is the strongest of the three and deals with our man trying to peddle his script around town. I liked the use of variable speeds of the camera to convey a sense of anxiety and frustration. The payoff you can see a mile away and I am not quite sure about our writers motivation when it comes to his violent acts but it was a fun trip.

This is a low budget film that suffers from the usual low budget constraints such as poor acting, effects, sets, etc. Despite these limitations the movie is surprisingly watchable and the music is very good at setting the right tone. There are interesting camera angles and effects that draw the viewer in and sometimes create a feeling that is similar to what the protagonist is feeling on screen. As I mentioned earlier the pacing in some of the scenes is not quite right but a good editor could fix that up with some generous snips. Also the writing could use some punching up in areas especially in the second story. All in all a good effort and I would be interested to see what Mr. Hoffman does next.

BTW Michael I consider myself somewhat of an aficionado when it comes to breasts and I believe the breasts shown for the two different girls shower scenes are in fact the same set of breasts. I would even go as far as to suggest that they are neither actresses breasts. Is this true?
