So I normally don't post much in this section of the forum and I certainly don't start threads but this story bothers me just a bit. I have always agreed in a persons right to end their life if they have a painful terminal illness. This girl was probably going to be terminal and even if she survived her quality of life would have been terrible. So why does it bother me? Is it the fact she was only 5 and couldn't make that choice? Or maybe it's just the way they asked her the question, as if heaven is an absolute. It feels manipulative even though I completely believe that they believe in heaven and love their daughter. I don't know im just curious what people think. I will warn you though that article and the video contained within it is HEARTBREAKING.

On the one hand, I really don't think a 5-year old truly understands this kind of decision.  On the other, I have little doubt it's what the parents would have chosen had they not given her the choice.

Here's the thing, of course asking her whether she wanted to stay alive or go to heaven is manipulative. It's also the best possible way they could have handled it, in my opinion. There was almost no chance of survival. And this way Julianna was allowed to make her own choice and leave with a measure of peace (I mean seriously imagine asking a 5 year old to choose between remaining incapacitated and passing on into nothingness. It's unthinkable). The only other decent option would have been for the parents to take it out of their daughter's hands altogether and make the choice themselves.

Yeah I understand that, I do. Maybe it's just so fucked up I can't wrap my mind around it. And that's saying something coming off one of the biggest massacres in US history.
