The Dark Tower (2017) Pre-release - Page 4

I hope we get a god damn trailer for this during the Superbowl. I'm frickin' dying here.

Is the Superbowl the right venue for this?  I mean, for film/book geeks, this film (good or bad) is a big deal, but the average football viewer won't have any idea what they're looking at, or why they should care.

I'm predicting a trailer when WONDER WOMAN is released.

If trailers for movies like Seventh Son and Tomorrowland can debut during a Superbowl, I don't see why this can't. Just stick "From Stephen King" at the start of it and even those guys wearing the beer hats will probably give it some attention.

It depends, are they going after the same demo as The Last Witch Hunter was?

Ugh.

This is doomed.

Official Poster up.

Sorry, Dark Tower, Doctor Strange already beat you to the Inception nostalgia.

I can a few moviegoers bending their faces sideways to read that.

Awwwww yeah. This means the trailer is almost here, finally.

If they use Behind Blue Eyes again I don't think I'm going to get it.  I mean, yes, book Roland does have iconic piercing blue eyes...

If it doesn't pop up online sooner, I'd wager the trailer will be in front of LIFE.
Way better than floating heads. The Tower exists in negative space!

Holy shit I didn't even see that. Definitely makes that poster jump way up in my estimation.

Works well with the whole The Tower is everywhere and nowhere and we are all inside of it because it holds up the universe deal.

The Tower is The Force, basically.
SlashFilm is reporting that this isn't standard NYC, but Lud. I kinda doubt that but it's fun to speculate.
Maybe they will play with that idea. Differences between "levels of the Tower" can be as subtle as the name of the world's favourite cola...

God, I hope both the trailer and the movie are good. I'm probably more excited about this than anything Star Wars related this year (and I'm pretty damned excited about The Last Jedi).

THAT is unwise expectations.

My expectation that this will be on VOD in about three months after it's release.

:D

I love love love The Dark Tower series, my favorite books, but yeah I have the sneaking suspicion this is going to be an Amazing Spider-Man 2 and be full of setup for a sequel that will never come.

Probably.

Your favorite ever? ...  Huh.

FORGET IT FREEMAN

IT'S BARTTOWN

Yes, my favorite book series ever.

My favorite book is probably Snow Crash.

I can live with that choice.

I also really dig Stephenson's Cryptonomicon, but I can admit the book is smarter than me and bashed my brain into mush for most of its page count.

CRYPTONOMICON is cool.

I dunno how to rank Stephenson's novels. I couldn't get into the Baroque Cycle, but I admire it from a conceptual standpoint. The other stuff I've all enjoyed, even when it's weaker stuff (like REAMDE). His latest, SEVENEVES, is awesome.

I'll be digging into ANATHEM later this year.
The poster is great, it gets better the more you look at it.

I won't be comparing it too much to the books, if it lives up the entertainment potential of an Elba vs McConaughay fantasy western that's enough for me. I'll be optimistic to the last.

Hey, I didn't even realise this was from the director of A Royal Affair. That's a good movie!

I swear though, no amount of time or fame or oscars is making "McConaughay" any easier to spell. I have to google it every time.
I'm making my way though "The Stand" now. So Flagg is also the villain in "The Dark Tower?!"

Very cool poster. Trying to figure out what's going on at the top. Is that Flagg there? Looks like a... ninja? on the left and a nosferatu on the right. Highest resolution I can find is from King's twitter and it doesn't go into enough detail to be sure.

Flagg is the villain in a lot of things, The Eyes of the Dragon for instance.
Does he still die in "The Stand?" He better. The book's long as fuck.

In a way.

So he gets married?
Is the trailer out? Cause I thought they released it months ago but when I went to check there's nothing!
No trailer. Which is insane given how soon this is supposed to be. They could have done some really interesting marketing but they've botched promotion on this. I'm thinking it will be this weekend with LIFE.

There was a leaked rough cut of a trailer months ago. A few unfinished effects shots. It wasn't good. It's still on YouTube and Facebook.

I have that script I should read it.

It's the shooting script? Revised by King?

Life I meant.  I would LOVE to see the Dark Tower one.  I think I had it sent to me maybe...

Ah, damn. I'd love to get my hands on DARK TOWER. I read a draft from when Howard was directing. It was bad.

I swear we talked about this before and someone had it...

Hmmm. I directed a bunch of people to Fukunaga's IT script.

I'll send you a link to the 2014 draft.

He's a villain, but he's technically not the "big bad" of the series. And he's not always Flagg, either. If you remember in The Stand, he goes under many different aliases, this being especially true in the Dark Tower series, as he goes under two other personas besides Flagg. And he seems to be able to jump to different worlds in the Stephen King universe. In Eyes if the Dragon, he still calls himself Flagg, but he's a wizard in a medieval setting.

It's actually interesting that they're calling him Flagg right off the bat. Are they hoping he'll play Flagg in that long rumored Stand remake?*

* Or are they? He's listed as the man in black on IMDb.

Flagg seemed to be an evolving concept as King progressed through the series.

In The Gunslinger he's Walter O'Dim and Marten Broadcloak, something that's treated as a twist (although that may just be in the re-edited version King did in the 2000s).

He's presumed dead there, but shows up again at the end of The Waste Lands. Through the description, talking about a denim jacket and buttons, it's clear he's Flagg but he refers to himself as Richard Fannin (RF).

Wizard & Glass sees Roland & co. cross worlds into The Stand briefly, so when Walter/Marten/Fannin reveals himself at the end as Flagg it's kind of a duh-doy.

Then he doesn't really appear again prominently until the last book, The Dark Tower. To say it's anticlimactic is...an understatement.

I'm not sure if this was put in when the book originally came out, but in the Drawing of the Three, Roland mentions Flagg by name, and the two characters who pursue him at the end of Eyes of the Dragon. I wonder if at some point King thought to himself that Walter/Marten sounded much like Flagg and decided to make them one in the same.

Flagg is King's archetypal guy who's up to no good. He's a commentary that we have as much or more to fear from crooked opportunists as we do from cosmic evil.

I kind of remember that.

Since he wrote the books over 30 years, you can see him really debating with himself. In some of the afterwards he talks about how MiB/Marten/Walter is also John "The Good Man" Farson from the flashbacks in Wizard & Glass, but that obviously turns out to not be true. I believe it's even implied in W&G and Wolves of the Calla that Flagg could be the Crimson King, but that also turns out to not be true.

He both conflates and bifurcates too many characters as he goes.

Walter is one of the best things in the script Freeman directed me to. They deal with him being all over and having many names, he even gloats about how he once destroyed a world with the flu.

But his personality is great. He and Sayre are maybe the only people with flair.

I would be okay with Flagg being the major master mind, especially if we only get a few movies (wishful thinking). In the books he's an opportunist, but he seems relatively loyal to the Crimson King. It wouldn't be a stretch to have him just be the Crimson King, and Richard Sayre, and most of the other big bads that pop up and rarely get a satisfying comeuppance.

And maybe leave out Mordred...or really tweak him...
