2016-17 NBA Season

Thought Nick Young might help set off the new season.

Seriously, I can't believe this idiot is still on our roster.

Kind of lost in all the wild Free Agent splash, it looks like Duncan is retiring. A generational player. A quiet champion. As competitively driven as all the great superstars, all the while remaining a nice guy. He beat Kobe and LeBron, and if the Bulls had stayed together he might've ended Jordan's run (Bulls would've had trouble with twin towers). I think I undervalued him for most  of his prime - he was never must see TV for me like some of his peers - and that's on me.  My respect for him only grew as he got older, and he became someone i rooted for. Now i'll miss him as he fades into sunset; i'm glad it's on his own terms, and i'm happy there was no undignified coda like Hakeem In Toronto or Ewing in Orlando. The greatest PF ever? I don't think there's any question anymore.

Thanks! Bookmarked. I'm always complaining that NBATV doesn't run classic games in the Summer anymore now that they go heavy with the Summer League.  Looks like just about everything in their library. Good lookin' out!

Lakers shining in summer league. New additions Ingram and Zubac both looked amazing. Watch out for undrafted rookie Zach Auguste as well.

RIP Hardwood Classics on Youtube. Too much heat!

I really wish NBA would get their digital options lined up. I will pay a modest fee to stream Summer League games. I will pay a more significant fee to legally watch Hardwood Classics, that shit was fire! 76ers were the original Superteam.

What I'm not gonna do is pay $200 a month for a bloated ass cable package I don't want any part of. Free yourself, NBA! Give the people what they want!

RIP, Nate "The Great" Thurmond

Maybe the most underrated big man of all time. Doomed to be overshadowed first by Wilt and Russell, and then Lew Alcindor, his dominance was still in rarified air of those legends.

(He averaged 21.3 and 22.0 rebounds per game in the 1966-67 and 1967-68 seasons — season averages exceeded by only Russell and Chamberlain in NBA history)

He is one of five players in NBA history to average at least 15 rebounds per game for his career.

He is one of five players in NBA history to average at least 20 rebounds per game during a season.

One of four players to get 40 rebounds in a game,

First player in NBA history to record a quadruple double.

Record for most rebounds in a quarter: 18

One of the greatest defenders of all time.

His coda with Cavs was one of the first great Veteran leadership role splashes.

He is kind of what I expected Patrick Ewing to be.

Pour one out and give the man his propers.

Also, LeBron's dad

Since free agency is pretty much over, with only a few stragglers left (J.R.'s about to get paid) I've decided for my way too early rankings.

East:

Cavs

Boston

Toronto

Indiana

Chicago

Detroit

Charlotte

Orlando

I honestly think the Hawks will implode. Howard is a cancer and they'll have to completely change their system to accommodate him. Korver is only getting worse and I don't think Schroeder has the shooting to make up for the space they'll lose switching out Horford for Dwight. With Horford, Brad Stevens is going to have fun. The team is only going to get better and with an actual defender at five they will be even better than last year. Miami without wade and with Bosh's future up in the air isn't a player. I think Orlando just nips them for that last spot.

Chicago is the one I'm most unsure of. Hoiberg is probably pulling out his hair that this is his first go around as a coach. None of the players fit his system, but damn. An engaged Rondo throwing no looks to a cutting Wade? If he can make it work that team will have fits of magic in between shitty hero ball. They'll only score 95 points a game but most of those points will be highlight plays. Toronto and Indiana will be pretty interchangeable, it just comes down to if Ellis can find his groove with the Pacers. I think him taking a Crawford role would be the best for both parties.

West:

GSW

Spurs

Clippers

OKC

Portland

Houston

Utah

Minnesota

I don't see much change in the west. GSW will dominate, Spurs will chug along, and while Tim Duncan is my favorite player ever, Gasol is an improvement over what Duncan was last year. I'm just sad Boban and Boris are gone. The Clippers are only going to get worse, but there's not really anyone to challenge them beyond OKC. The two of them are pretty interchangeable, it just comes down to if OKC can find an answer at SF. Oladipo will be a great running mate with Russ and Illysaova will ease some of their spacing problems. I love Portland's chances to get better and better. Retaining everyone was a smart move, they just need to find some defense on that roster. Houston will score a ton but won't be able to stop a single soul. Losing Howard was ultimately a plus as Capela does a very similar job without the clash of egos. I think Memphis is going to get hit by injuries and won't be able to keep up. The Jazz and Twolves are young and hungry and will be punishing everyone who plays them. Dallas just didn't get the firepower necessary to stay in the playoffs. Here comes the reign of KAT and Gobert.

Spurs are going to struggle mighty.

Yall have no idea how good Carlisle's system is gonna make Bogut look. So long as he can stay healthy (and yeah its a big IF but Dallas' medical staff is also top-tier), Mavs finish 1 or 2 in the division, depending on how quickly Houston pulls it together.

How much do you want to see the OKC v GS matchup in the second round this coming year?

I imagine it would be reminiscent of the Phoenix/LA series when Phoenix was at the height of it's power.

My man KG retired?

There goes my last hero.

Props due: The ultimate teammate and competitor of his generation. His passion was a joy to watch. Backbone of what I consider one of the 10 greatest teams of alltime: the '08 Celtics.

(if he doesn't get hurt, I think they 3 peat)

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think we'll ever get a superstar with his intensity again.  Especially mixed with the abundance of charisma he had.

A superstar and a do dirt guy. That's his legacy.

Also, dude was super funny!

Far be it for me to say anything good about Houston. But their new alts are super nice. I think the Nets just recently announced a very clean uni as well. Its kind of making me upset. Mavs need a re-brand, the glossy blue shtick just doesn't work for me.

Between that and the incoming D'Antoni-fueled MVP season for Beardforce, I just don't know whwat to do with myself.

Those jerseys are sweet.

Yo, Z, I'm so down on the upcoming season. I feel like the Clips missed their window. D. Rose is being investigated for rape. KD in GS. The Bulls, an absolute mess. And I don't know what to expect from the Rockets.  The only good news, Giannis Antetokounmpo got paid. And Bird assembled a pretty dope Pacers team.

New Era. Load up on TWolves. I think D'Antoni is underrated as a coach, so I think that team is going to perform tremendously. I would like to see Paul George attain his potential and for the Pacers to finally knock off LeBron (asking too much, I know).

I do agree, things feel a little stale in the moment, like there are only two teams that matter and everything else is incidental. I do think the KD movie is being hugely overrated, mostly because of his foot. Here's a fun way to frame it: the Dubs took a team that was 1 game away from repeating, and blew up their roster to add a guy who has screws in his foot.

Also I want to see Westbrook turn into a werewolf.

This season will be beautiful if we can get a OKC v GS matchup in the playoffs.

I do think the Rockets should be better without Howard, but they will not threaten to do anything significant with their one way MVP and one way coach.

And just one way everything. Anderson and Gordon can't defend and Capela's not exactly a terror on offense. They'll be fun to watch, but with Harden being announced as point guard the offense will be lots of dribbling at the top of the key and a drive at the end of the clock to get a cheap foul. If anything, D'Antoni might be the one to finally get Harden to learn ball movement and using the clock wisely.

Thinking about it more and more, I think it will come down to time management during the regular season for the Warriors. Being shallower than last year will not help and if I was any team with a bullying wing I'm going straight at Durant during the regular season. I think people are underestimating how tiring Barnes' role for the Warriors is. He may not be anywhere near as good as Durant, but he was sure as hell a lot more durable. If only the Thunder could have get someone like Stanley Johnson or Jae Crowder. They don't need a transcendent wing just someone who can beat down Durant and wear him out.

Zach Lowe's back:

Angry, loner Westbrook is going to be scary for other teams. I feel bad for every defender he's going to blow past with impunity.

I know the Knicks needed shooting, but jeez.

Is D.Rose going to jail forever? Is this the ugliest story to ever come out of the NBA? What the hell, man. I sincerely hope the Chicago streets aren't pulling Rose into total destruction, but I have a bad feeling about it.  He's just never surrounded himself with the right people.

okay, D.Rose before hoes. My bad.

Harrison Barnes is so bad. Cmon man!!

I'm glad the D. Rose story doesn't end with prison, but i'm not sure i'll ever be able to root for him again.

Definitely one of the more gross chapters in league history.

Warriors playing beyond sloppy. Gonna take time for them to gel but this is plain bad tonight.

So, I guess the Spurs are just never gonna be sub-optimal ever again. Great Value Simmons looks like a beast and Kawhi is on some MVP shit. Even LMA is looking like a solid fit.

I ain't even mad.

Kawhi killed it tonight, Simmons playing in beast mode, and Aldridge just playing efficient basketball. The Spurs looked great.

And Damian Lillard got his MVP run off to a solid start.

Well, there goes 82-0!

And the rumors of the Spurs' demise may have been exaggerated.

And now I go back into NBA hibernation until Christmas!

Stat whore Harden was his usual clutch self at the end of the game. Despite the refs putting him on the line every time someone breathed on him he managed two terrible turnovers and gave up basket after basket in the last 3 minutes. If my young Lakers could play against the D'antoni shit show every night we could finish with a winning record. Too bad we have to go to Utah on Friday and play against an actual basketball team.

Free Trevor Ariza, dude deserves better.

Steve Nash school of MVP. But yeah, I didn't see him give up on any plays, he was contesting shots. He just got outplayed by Jordan Clarkson and the LA Heckler really did have an impact.

All in all the start of the season could not be any more exciting. I can see purists lamenting the lack of defensive intensity. Its October tho. Good offense beats good defense anyway, and so far we have seen some incredible displays. NEW AGE OF HEROES

I'm also gonna take this as further evidence that players were sandbagging last season, waiting to get paid and holding back until a new deal got worked out. There's just too much money for everyone to be making. I'm really being forced into a reconsideration of my longtime haterism for LeBron. The NBPA got shit taken care of, he put together a hell of a team in Cleveland, he did it for the Land. He's still a weird dude and more media than man, and he's definitely been on the gucci juice. But its puritanism, to say that discredits his accomplishments in a real meaningful way. If the science is there, maybe all them dudes should be living better through chemistry. LeBron's never been seriously injured, after all.  I think mitigating injuries should be the next major undertaking for Adam Silver and the NBPA. Mark Cuban should throw down $100 million in the name of ULTIMATE MEDICAL SCIENCE. And realistically that approach would surely involve some fairly serious supplementals.

The league is in such a fantastic place right now. Its electric. Even the ESPN broadcast has stepped up!

Reggie Miller is steady garbage tho. That guy has to go.

Oh good I was starting to worry we were gonna miss out on the horseshit refereeing.

Fuck the Clippers.

KG joining the TNT gang is a dream come true! I had no idea. Should be fun.

Yo, Z: Rockets/ Mavs tonite. I might be down for that.

Against our defense, I would expect James Harden to go for something like 40 & 20.

And still lose.

Ahahaha!!
