OK, here's my alternate draft:

Snake: Zack McGowan

Hauk: Frank Grillo

Duke: Rick Yune

Romero: Iko Uwais

Cabbie: Benedict Wong

Brain: Jamie Foxx

Maggie: Beyonce

Everything else was taken.

I can't believe that nobody drafted Zack MdGowan or Frank Grillo.

I drafted 50 Cent as The Duke, but I strongly considered going with a Rapper I actually like. Almost went with Big Daddy Kane.

Read somewhere that Chuck Norris (along with Tommy Lee Jones) were also up for the part of Snake. That got me thinking what would a Cannon Films ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK look like circa 1987. Came up with this:

Snake: Michael Dudikoff (cast just before filming when Chuck Norris bails over refusing to wear eye-patch for entire film)

Hauk: Charles Bronson

The President: John P. Ryan

Cabbie: Ed Lauter

The Duke: Steve James

Maggie: Sybil Danning (Sorry, Lucinda Dickey. It was close)

Brain: John Glover

Romero: Billy Drago

I miss Black Sails. Hope to see McGowan in lots of projects going forward. Real breakout role.

No Brion James????

When I first decided on a gender switch, Charlize Theron was my first thought for Snake.  But then Michelle Rodriguez came to mind and that was my go to ... until Pither stole her from me.  By then, Theron felt a little tired to me, so I considered Lucy Lawless for a bit, but I finally settled on Sackhoff.

Frances McDormand was my Cabbie for a while, as was Leslie Jones.

Thought about Kate McKinnon for Brain, but that seemed too soon and too close to Ghostbusters.

I get the sense that Zack is close...this close...to breaking it big.  BLACK SAILS showed his heavy side, but SHAMELESS showed his laid back side, and somebody needs to cast him in something that lets him use both personas correctly.

Kathleen Wilhoite as Chock Full O'Nuts girl?

Julianne Moore and Winona Ryder (like her as Maggie, by the way, Elvis) were my alternates for Brain, and Mary J. Blige was a possible Duchess. I also thought about going with a straight-up comedy, with Sean William Scott as Snake. In that case, I was also planning to try for Danny DeVito as Cabbie and Terry Crews as the Duke. Maybe Will Forte or Bill Hader for Brain.

Forte would have been a great Brain.

Btw, just to make it official, I'm picking Kathryn Bigelow as my director.

Glenn Fleshler was a Romero I was going back and forth on, but ultimately I thought Romero works better as a smaller guy.

I wouldn't mind if he stays on TV, because he does really well at slowly revealing character. He would be such a great fit on shows like Banshee or Justified. So hopefully people at Starz, FX, Cinemax are also considering him for their big projects going forward.

But of course, though I'd have to figure out some way to get her in a scene with Bronson's Hauk. No way I can deny an audience a chance for more of that witty MURPHY'S LAW banter.

One of you guys mentioned you had him on your List: I'll go ahead and call John Hawkes the GREAT undrafted Brain.

I had Hugh Jackman as my Snake for a while.  I ended up using Zac Efron for the simple fact that Hugh is too damned old right now for what the part calls for.  I kept Hugh in my pocket in case I lost Russell Crowe, but I got Crowe for Hauk.

I also had Lady Gaga and Beyonce set up as alternates for Maggie or Chock/Nuts woman, but I never had to use them.

There are lots of rappers who could've been Duke. I considered Dre as The Doctor of New York.

The two actresses I thought would get picked as Snake were Charlize and Emily Blunt.

My alternates:

Charlie Cox, Ryan Gosling, and Ben Foster were possible Snakes.

It was Cranston or bust for Hauk, but how did Kevin Costner go unpicked!?

John Travolta was my first idea for Cabbie before it went down to Goodman and Reilly.

I agonized with Edward Norton, Christian Slater, Jon Hamm, Raul Esparza, or Bill Hader as Brain.

All my Maggies got taken.

I almost had Gina Gershon as Romero, or Crispin Glover, Lee Tergesen, and BD Wong.

I'm surprised that nobody went with Manu Bennett for Snake.  That's another one that seemed a shoe in for the role.

That reminds me, I thought of Kanye as The Duke for some time. Him and R. Marcus Taylor (Suge Knight from Straight Outta Compton).
Surprised no one took Gina Carano for anything either.

Karl Urban was the Snake I was surprised never happened.

I thought Macon Blair would be your Romero, Hunter.

My alternates included Chris Hemsworth as Snake, Albert Brooks as Cabbie, Stanley Tucci and John Hawkes as Brain, Lena Headey as Maggie and Dylan Baker and Bob Odenkirk as The President.

Blair has to be SoS.

Bob Odenkirk would've been a good Brain if Cranston wasn't in mine.

Aaron Paul would've been a good Romero.

Kanye would've been hilarious as The Duke, especially since he really believes he's A-Number One.

Had a lot of B-movie guys as Hauk: Lance Henriksen, Ted Levine, Clancy Brown, Michael Ironside, Peter Weller, Robert Patrick, etc...

Reginald Vel Johnson and James Hong where some more out there Cabbies.

For the Pres: Sam Neill, Malcolm McDowell (kind of a cheat), Gary Oldman, Rutger Hauer, Stellan Skarsgard

Undrafted Hateful Eighters: Tim Roth as Brain, Bruce Dern as Cabbie

No Dave Bautista as The Duke?

Had Bautista as a possible Slag.

Choi Min-sik was a President that popped into my head, but I don't know if he can really speak English.

I oh so briefly thought about Wilford Brimley as Cabbie. If he committed to the doofus quality, it could've been hilarious.

Flirted with using my bonus pick to take Sean Young as the revolutionary who crashed Air Force One. Only because I thought it would be a kick to see her destroy James Woods' plane.

Hahaha!

Thought about her for Slag, by I really wanted the wrestling connection.

Yeah, I had Sean Young and Anne Heche as possible revolutionaries. Lohan and Amber Heard as possible Chock Full o' Nuts. But Ididnt wanna be insensitive, you understand.

Oldman as President and Tim Roth as Brain would've been a cool thing.

Undrafted Hateful Eighters: I thought about Madsen for Rehme

Jake Gyllenhaal was a Snake I thought about, but I just can't see him doing the voice.

Considered Bradley Whitford for Rehme, for some reason. Couldn't get it out of my head. But I didn't really want or need a Rehme. If you want, you can imagine he's playing Rehme in mine. But it's uncredited.

Something I was considering all week but ultimately couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on was Jeffrey Jones as the President.

I thought about Costner for Hauk, but I didn't think he'd be cynical enough.

Colour me surprised Denzel Washington didn't get picked for Hauk. I was also thinking of him for the Duke, with the pimp walk from Malcolm X in mind.

Apart from that, most of my other shortlisted choices were picked. I had Helen Mirren as a female Hauk, and Pam Greer as a Duchess, as well as Iggy POP for the Duke.
So we got Swinton and Dwayne Johnson, how come we didn't get the triumphant return of…

As usual one of the harder parts of these drafts is finding actors of the right age.  Snake doesn't feel like the 30 year old Russel was at the time, so its hard to imagine anyone that young in the role.  I started to go with Jake Johnson in the Snake role.  I sort of think he could pull it off, but I couldn't find anything in his filmography that made me confident enough to back it up.  Maybe he won't just be a goofball in the upcoming Mummy film.

Karl Urban and Jeremy Renner were my other top choices for Snake.  Urban gets used a lot, so I tried to avoid that. And I had a tough time picturing Renner in the role.  He could probably kill the role, but for some reason, maybe his big nose, I couldn't picture him pulling off Snake's hair and not looking like a tough-guy version of Owen Wilson.

Donal Logue would've been a good Cabbie.  I mentioned earlier, I toyed with idea of Sigourney Weaver as Cabbie.  Geena Davis also came to mind for that role.  They seem to get roles as authority figures in these movies now, so I thought it'd be fun to have them in the older crazy "sidekick" kind of role instead.

Denzel was on my list for Hauk.  He'd have overshadowed the rest of my relatively working class cast though.

My alternate for Maggie was Gina Torres.

I considered an all-SNL alumni cast with Will Forte as Snake and Eddie Murphy as the Duke.

Charles Rocket as the copilot.

I'm not proud of it either.

August 5th, 1957, American Bandstand makes its network TV debut.  So bite your tongue on that Smashmouth sheeeit.

What about the Happy Madison version?

Snake: Adam Sandler

Hauk: Henry Winkler

Cabbie: Rob Schneider

The Duke: Shaquille O'Neal

The President: Jon Lovitz

Brain: David Spade

Maggie: Jaime Pressly

Romero: Nick Swardson

Chock Full o'Nuts: Jackie Sandler

Computer Voice: Drew Barrymore

"All Star" would work.

I was thinking "...Baby One More Time" or the Friends theme as Cabbie's music.
