2016 College Football Thread

So, USC and Alabama are playing in the opener at the Jerry Dome. In anticipation of the event, USC released the following shirt:

Alabama decided to reply, citing OJ Howard's performance in last year's national championship game:

College football's almost here!

Wow. I can only imagine what the FSU/Alabama game will stir up next year. When they played each other like 10 years ago, the FSU propaganda was "Roll Tribe". In an interesting twist, although FSU won the game on the field, there sort of is no winner of that game "officially". That game was one of the wins that FSU had to vacate because of the music class thing, and then a year or so later, Alabama got hit with a similar punishment for some text book scam and had to vacate games as well. So on the books, I guess that game never happened.

And Appalachian State takes the lead against the Vols 7-0 already. I HATE YOU FOOTBALL

13-3 Appalachian State HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA I'm pretty sure this is the Joker's origin.

13-3 Appalachian State over Tennessee at halftime.

Looks like my Saturdays will be free.

Even if Tennessee comes back and wins this, no way they stay Top 10.

They won in overtime, thanks to a fortunate fumble by the quarterback which was recovered by the running back. Goodness gracious. This promises to be a season of inexplicable highs and lows.

The Beavers were defeated by the Golden Gophers.

Notre Dame-Texas was incredible. Maybe the first time I've ever seen a two-QB system actually work. (and I'm not talking about ND, who decided on Kizer way too late.)

Hey, did you guys know Torii Hunter was at that game??

I did not watch a second of the FSU/Ole Miss game live. We had to get up early to head out from Dragoncon and I knew there was no way I could sleep if I tried to watch. I went to bed at 10, and then I guess something called to me, because I woke up at 1:45 AM and was wide awake. So I decided to turn on Sportscenter to see how badly they lost...and wow was I surprised. I have since watched the DVR'd game at home. And the first half didn't look as terrible as I thought it would have been. But good for Francois--he's worked super hard and it's good to see it come together for him.

Francois may be quicker than C. Ward, but he's not as big (obviously) - if he bulks up a little bit he will be scary in two years.

Hell, he's scary now. REALLY scary in two years.

That Ole Miss-FSU game was quite something. Apparently, Alabama is the only SEC team who plans on making halftime adjustments this year.

Vols fell to 17th. They're 10 point favorites against Va Tech. I'm not sure why.

That might be a challenger for the 6-3 barn burner Wake won against VT a few years back, that started with them going to OT with a score of 0-0.  #GoACC

If it makes you feel any better, Mangy, VT was at one point losing 13-10 to Liberty.

LIBERTY.

FALWELL UNIVERSITY.

As delighted and gratified I was by just about everything in how ending the Beamer era played out last winter (if maybe a season or 2 late), I'm still nauseous we provided effing Liberty with the exposure and $$ of playing FBS. And then to flop about so badly in the opening quarter to give up a lead? Bleargh. No blowout final score would have been enough to compensate. Inside, I'm still in the shower, unable to get clean. So unclean.

But hey, at least we're not UVA. And I was so looking forward to some semblance of a renewed, relevant rivalry, but it's gonna take a long long time for Bronco to dig those bastards out of the Groh-London hole.

Anyway, Go Hokies! Beat that spread! Beat that spread! Beat that spread!

One of my favorite photos:

I think (hope) UT will ultimately win, but I think Fuente's a better coach than Butch Jones. The Hokies will be at the top of the ACC in short order.

Central Michigan beats ranked Oklahoma St. on a Hail Mary lateral.

The last 3 minutes of the Arkansas-TCU game were insane.

Man I love football.

It's a shame that storm rolled in and stopped the Battle in Bristol after only one quarter. But what are ya gonna do!

As long as our opponents turn it over 5 times a game, calling it now, Vols will be national champs.

Trav, the future of VT looks bright. They ate UT's lunch until they imploded. UT didn't really do anything special offensively. Hilariously, they handed out a trophy after the game . . . At least my team gets to raise one this year.

That apparently shouldn't have happened since the rules don't allow for an untimed down after an intentional grounding penalty.

Derwin James has a slight meniscus tear that he's having surgery on today--expected to miss 2-6 weeks and will not be on hand for the FSU/UL game this weekend. So naturally panic is setting in for FSU fans.

I though Louisville would win a close one, but it's surreal seeing the Noles getting beaten this badly.

Meanwhile, Tennessee again struggles at home. 21-19 over Ohio in the 4th quarter.

I watched the Showtime series about Florida State this morning - it covered last week's game, the injury to Lewis and a couple of other things, but the one thing I thought was interesting is that they went into the personal relationship that Jimbo Fisher has with his DC. He's known him since he was a GA.

Which of course doesn't mean he's a very good defensive coordinator. It just means he's a friend. And we all know how that goes.

Charles Kelly looks to me like he'd be a fine positional coach but as a DC for a major national contending college team, he is clearly overmatched.

I'm sure FSU is overrated but they aren't 63-20 overrated. All that talent shouldn't lose that badly.

So have pro scouts weighed in on Lamar Jackson yet? I can't imagine he is with all that running.

Jesus Christ. I wonder how that guy will feel when the Vols are 3-4 a month from now. (NOTE: I'm a Vol fan, and I guarantee that will happen.)

I'm sure he thought it was clever, six beers in.

UT-Florida this weekend. I already have an ulcer forming.

On the bright side, Casa De Mange should be loaded with foodstuffs: dip, wings, sausage balls . . . if I time it out, I may be able to stay in the kitchen for 3 hours and avoid the game completely.

In the darkest timeline Trump's support of Paterno narrowly gives him Pennsylvania, and thus a man molesting little kids in the shower indirectly leads to the downfall of the United States.

p.s.  Is it worth noting that the announcer for the Ravens (traditionally seen as a messenger of death) shares the name Gerry Sandusky?

That first sentence is forcing me to take a shower on a Friday night. Thanks for that.

I remember an article where that announcer talked about getting death threats when the story first broke.

It won't approach the Choke at Doak, but McElwain's conservative playcalling in the second half trying to nurse an 18-point lead for 30 minutes is close. It takes like five minutes nowadays for teams to score three touchdowns. This isn't the NFL. You can't salt the clock away.

Congrats to Tennessee for ending the streak. Pretty impressive for a coach who was essentially fired on Social Media at halftime.

LSU just booted Les Miles.  Seems kind of sudden, but then again, LSU doesn't want to be competing for December bowl games.

It was pointed out by someone else first, but there is a sense of "who in the fuck does LSU think they are?"

They seem to believe they ought to be RIGHT THERE with Bama, but historically, they've been a solid also-ran program.

This Saban/Miles run? These ARE your glory days, LSU.
So where does Les go? Can we start Les to ND rumors?

If he goes outside the SEC he could be really successful
post #41 of 150

Saban back to LSU would be the ultimate Saban thing to do.

I think I'd rather have Brian Kelly than Les. Kelly is a much better offensive game planner. And Les can't do that SEC style recruiting up in South Bend.

Yes it does. Just ask FSU's defense at the end of that USF game.

I don't know if Kelly has lost the team, or the respect of the defense, or what's going on. But giving up an average of 35 points a game through the first 4 games is not a good stat. And idiots are spouting "Les Miles for Defensive coordinator!" when he's never coached a defense, ever.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! The Vols have shaved 20 years of my life already this season. INCREDIBLE!

Is it bad that I sat here as the UNC kicker lined up and said, "I hope he makes it. FSU deserves to lose this game."

Lots of crazy endings today so far.

My wife was watching him run down the field doing the chop and I said "If you're career long is a 49-yarder and you nail a 54-yarder to beat FSU at their place, yes, you can do that."

Will probably be the biggest kick of that kid's career.

Yeah, I was mad at first, then was like, FSU couldn't do anything about it. Next week could be mighty ugly. If the FSU D lays an egg vs Miami, Kelly has got to be done. Especially after Fisher just went on and on post-game about the blame is with the coaches.

Games are being moved/cancelled because of the hurricane--FSU/UM might be one of them.
