RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 (2018)

Thread Starter

Figured I might as well start a thread so we don't clog up the 'wtf are they making' thread. I'll change the title as soon as we...you know, have one.

So Rockstar has released two promo images so far:

Some of you might remember the build-up to GTAV going a lot the same way. An image a day was released till the big reveal trailer. If Rockstar are doing the same here we can probably expect a trailer by Sunday.

And today it was (unofficially) revealed that Take-Two have registered the domain name RedDeadOnline.com

A lot of people are jumping to the conclusion that this means the game will ONLY be a multiplayer one. To which I say 'Nuh uh'. I get that gaming companies fucking us over in recent years has made us wary but I have yet to see any reason to believe that. Especially based on Rockstar's history. GTA Online might have made a lot of money in recent years but let's not forget they only got that chance thanks to the INSANE amounts of money that the name Grand Theft Auto V made. And you can bet that Rockstar knows this as well. So even though I don't have any concrete proof I feel comfortable saying that this will be a full Single Player AND Multiplayer game. Same as RDR and GTAV were.

Is GTA Online fun if you give it a chance? I kind of gave up on it after I was killed trying to get to a race, then sat in a loading screen for three minutes only to get my ass handed to me during said race.

I suppose I like my sandbox games with a degree of control and curation, ala Witcher 3.

In any case, this game will be a lock for me regardless. Red Dead Redemption is a stone cold classic.

No PC port...fuck. Looks like I'm buying a PS4 I guess. I am NOT waiting another 4 fucking years for this. Fuck that.

Still the biggest load of horseshit ever but yeah...

Was hoping for an HD port of RDR to hold us over.  That game's the sole reason I'm still hanging on to my PS3.

But don't know if that'd be a smart move with a sequel coming next year.

Fuck yes.  RDR is in my top 5 games of all time.

Just say it also doubles as a second/back up Blu-Ray player/streaming device and rationalize the purchase guilt away.

Also, damn....a whole year cant pass fast enough

Yeah, it's something I've mulled over for a while now cause I do like the look of a lot of PS4 exclusives like Uncharted, The Last of Us and Horizon: Zero Dawn.

I'm still not fucking happy about it though...

Yeah, sorry, I liked RDR as much as the next guy (OK, maybe not that guy, he's crazy) but unless there's a PC port I'll just have to admire from the sidelines. $460 (or whatever) for a machine that plays games worse than the PC I currently own would require a level of "eh, fuck it" money that I just don't possess. Also, gotta second the "lame" for RDR 2. Come on Rockstar, that's weak.

Yeah, I'll get a PS4 for this.

Y'all are either crazy or crazy rich, but if you're really willing to grab a console for this, might not hurt to wait and see what the Scorpio has to offer. If any company is going to take advantage of that increased horsepower, it would be someone like Rockstar with money to burn on a "bells and whistles" version. Plus, it's got the 4K Blu-Ray thing, which is...something?

Eh, there probably will be a port two years later. Same as GTAV did. And that's probably gonna result in dumb fucks like yours truly double dipping for it.

And my initial reaction to the name was the same...till I realised that nobody remembers Revolver and it barely has any connection to Redemption which this one seems to be building off of much more so it makes sense.

Honestly, Microsoft allowing me to play those games on PC anyway means I'll probably never buy another X-Box, so the PS4 will have more value when it comes to exclusives for me. But honestly, I just love RDR so much. I wish I could still fucking play it. So it IS crazy...but we do crazy things for love.

It makes sense, but it's boring.

Also, Redemption kind of fit the first game's story to a T, so I'm curious whether it will work here as well, or if they're just going "fuck it, brand recognition baby!"

All you need is 'Red Dead' in the title for brand recognition.

Are we assuming that RDR2 will follow the adventures of the son?

Seems unlikely. Wouldn't that set this world in the 1920-30's? RDR was framed around the "last days of the Wild West" trope.

Yep, but let's be honest here, they could call it "Red Dead Fuck You, Pay Us" and if it came with a PC release of the original I'd buy two copies. Still fun to whinge though.

As for the kid, I'd be surprised given that the original in large part was about the end of the "Wild" West so it would be weird to go even further down the road.

EDIT: Damn, scooped.

I was lucky enough to buy my younger brother's PS4 on the cheap because he decided he wanted the Arkham special edition console with the Bat symbol emblazoned on it. No shit-- some dork's pathological Batmania was actually good for something.

Problem was, I had finally, finally gotten around to playing RDR and had logged a significant amount of time on it, and it was great. But when the PS3 got shuffled to a side room the game went with it and I kinda forgot about it. Which is really stupid because I haven't been using the 4 for anything other than a blu and streaming device since.

So I think I'll now just wait for this new one. I'm glad there is single player, because I wouldn't buy it if my only option were getting murderized by some 9 year old within two seconds of breathing virtual air.

Guy on the far left could be a young John Marston.  Second from center looks like Bill Williamson from RDR. In RDR they mention the gang would rob and murder, but they also gave to the poor before their leader flipped out.  So it could be a getting the gang together Magnificent 7/Butch and Sundance/Wild Bunch mash-up.

I'd prefer they just leave Marston's story alone.

I hope its not a GTAV situation where you play as all 7 of these guys.  It worked alright for GTAV, but in the end made the overall story feel smaller than it should.  I'd rather they focus the story around one guy.

Oh, I'd love to play as the whole ensemble. That was one of my favorite aspects of GTAV.

DANCE DANCE RED DEAD REVOLUTION

So can we tie each other to train tracks in the multiplayer or what? And what the hell ever happened to using the trailer to announce the game? "Trailer coming on the 20th." Fuck off.

I don't give a shit about multiplayer. The priority of this series should be single player, and then multiplayer. Since this is my favorite game evar, I couldn't be happier. The next year is going to be a looooong wait.

Rumor I heard is that it's a prequel of sorts, so you're still playing John and not his son. I'm all for that.

Anyone else feeling the need to fire up their old XBox 360 and play the original again?

Between this announcement and Westworld...  absolutely.

Betcha Gamestop sells out of used copies of RDR over the next day or two.

I did this a couple of months ago to see if I could finally get a few beaver pelts after giving up years ago. I still love it and the experience I had, but I think it didn't age as well as I hoped. It's just obvious that it's last generation in some less than desirable ways. I was also very rusty. Took me a good hour to relearn the ropes.

I played through RDR again last year. Still plays like a dream.

Yeah I was actually going to say this same thing. It's kind of a moot point as I gave away my 360 when I built my gaming rig, but part of the reason I'm hoping for a PC release of the original is so I can do a Grim Fandango style "wow, now this is how I remember it looking!" rose tinted nostalgia playthru.

EDIT: Also, the original came out in 2010 good lord.

Wouldn't mind a sequel to GUN while we're at it.

We basically need a shit ton more Western games in general.

Yeah, I'd love to play RDR again if my 360 didn't die and I sold all my games.

I'm pretty sure I beat that game, and yet I can remember absolutely nothing about it other than Thomas Jane was the main character (I think?).

That said, if anyone here hasn't played Call of Juarez: Gunslinger HOP ON IT. It's the tequila shot to RDR's cold beer.

I've said it before: if they ever come out with a well designed Western MMO, you'll find my dried up corpse in front of my computer.  The idea of doing a raid (rob a bank, rob a train, etc) with gunfighters, riflemen, knife-throwers, bow/arrow users, and other classes simply sounds like too much damned fun.

Good to know on CALL OF JUAREZ.  I always meant to play that.

Good ones, though:

Aghh, that fucking game.

There is Hard West on PC

Not perfect, but pretty great if you in the market for a supernatural desperadoes/x-com type of game.

And it may have ages like crap (and it wasnt that good to begin with), but damn if music and story didnt made this my favorite western game growing up:

I mean , check the main theme:

Damn, Darkwatch is another one I remember liking but I'm having a hard time remembering any specifics (cue: "I've wasted my life!" clip). I grew up with PC before getting into consoles during college, and for a while I was going to garage sales and just buying up stacks of Xbox and PS2 games to see what I'd missed. I remember being pleasantly surprised by that one, but I think Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath is the better entry in the "Western-ish" FPS console niche. I also really liked Desperadoes (the sequels...not so much) so I may have to check out Hard West.

Yeah, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath slipped my mind when it came to Weird West games.

And didnt Darkwatch had a good/bad morality sistem based on a demon/angel playmate looking girls thing/mechanic?

Hard West is, like i said, good, but it has its flaws. I enjoyed, personally.

But in retrospective (and the experience3 at the time of release), I think Lucasart's Outlaws was my favorite western game until RDR arrived.

Visually and gameplay wise it was just ok for the time, but it was the animated cutscenes/story (Dr. Death was one creepy bastard of a villain, and his demise is the best scene in the game) and that bloody brilliant soundtrack that is such an evocation of Morricone that elevated the game for me.

Loved Gun.  Bit short but a few memorable sequences, particularly the riverboat rescue, and a great score.  Also, blowing people up with the exploding arrows.

Honestly, that sequence riding into Mexico as Jose Gonzales plays is the most incredible gaming moment I've ever experienced. Just stunning beyond words.

Yeah, I think I just came to Outlaws too late because while I appreciated those elements, it definitely felt really dated, which is kind of crazy considering it came out just a year before Half-Life. That said, I actually went to Wikipedia to see if there was some big game we were overlooking: Nope! It really does seem like there's a crazy dearth of Western games.

EDIT: Oh, forgot to add, great box as well, that was a cool one to have on the shelf back before I divested myself of worldly belongings. You know, physical ones. Digital hoarding is so much easier!

Along with Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, I would also recommend the older - but very good - Call of Juarez Bound in Blood. It probably doesn't play as smoothly as Gunslinger, but it tells a pretty good tale of two brothers in the old west.

Yeah, loved that boxart; PC games were all class back then.

Also amazing that Outlaw was the first FPS to have a sniper zoom. Did not know that.
