The president's legal counsel is incompetent.

Matt Osborne: Trump's Lawyer: How Dare James Comey 'Leak' His Own Unclassified Memos

Quote:
Following the dramatic testimony from fired FBI director James Comey before the Senate Select Intelligence Committee today, Donald Trump's lawyer Marc Kasowitz issued a blistering statement of his own decrying Comey's decision to leak his memorandums of meetings and phone calls with the president to the press.

"Today, Mr. Comey admitted that he unilaterally and surreptitiously made unauthorized disclosures to the press of privileged communications with the President," Kasowitz said. In fact, his client waived any executive privilege by discussing those communications multiple times in public.

"Trump and Kasowitz come out of a world of pervasive NDAs and attorney-client privilege and want to think that people who work in the executive branch have that kind of obligation to the President Trump," Josh Marshall writes at TPM. "They don't."

Quote:
Media reactions to Mr. Kasowitz have been almost uniformly negative. "What a portrait of decline of professional services [his statement] is," MSNBC's Ari Melber told Brian Williams. The hosts of the Fox News show Outnumbered were unimpressed, agreeing that Kasowitz was "not the right person to send out."

They may be right. Marc Kasowitz is the kind of attorney you hire to intimidate angry creditors or women who accuse you of sexual assault, which is what he has previously done for Donald Trump. His full-throated defense and attack-dog style clearly please the president. But Kasowitz does not have a reputation in legal circles for effective representation in big federal criminal cases.

Looks like Sessions is going to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday:  Should we expect obfuscation and more perjury or falling-on-the-sword?

Because I think it's a safe bet we won't get any truth.

The former. Denial, not loyalty, is the glue that binds Republicans to Trump. No one who had a career outside his campaign is going to volunteer for fall guy duty.

Sessions won't fall on the sword, so that's off the table.

If history is any indication, expect easily disprovable lies. These are the situations where stupid people who think they're smart manage the almost impressive feat of stabbing themselves in the back.

We can just hope he manages to screw himself right into prison.

The interesting part in the polls is how well the non-voter/independent opinions match the clinton-voters. Drumpf is losing the PR battle badly.

That's where the needed votes to turn this tide can come from.

"She had a good/cruel riff mocking @Reince45 in WH staff meetings. "No leaks guuuys" she said, mimicking him in a dopey voice. "Seriously" ... "He should just be honest: 'I'm upset because there's someone working on a story who pronounces it RAYNSE instead of REINCE.'"

There was more genuine affection and respect in Selina Meyer's White House than in Trump's.

There's no correct way to pronounce Reince. It's not a name. It's a typographical error.

It was super fucking easy to find photos that matched. All I had to do was Google "Toad Air Marshall" in one tab, and "Trump" in another.

Yeah, I had to look to see if the artist was credited as John Baron.

I like that Trump's artistically inclined fans consistently imagine him into a fuckable body*. No subtext there at all.

*And before a Chudpublican comes in here trying to make a point with flattering artistic renderings of Obama, you should know that the former POTUS is eminently fuckable.
The realistic version of him grimacing in pain after throwing his back out after one turn wouldn't play as well with the base.

Fuckable Trump body is so bizarre. Not just slimmed down and nondescript. That's like Magic Mike Trump.

Is this a thing in all Trumpie political cartoons?

If that cartoon wanted to be accurate, he'd be sticking that wrench down his own throat.

In a follow-up to the story about a large number of Democratic House Reps and Senators preparing to sue Trump over the Emoluments Clause, the DAs of Maryland and Washington DC are filing suit this week as well. It seems like they may have the strongest standing to do so.

Goddammit, the AV Club sucks lately. Would it have killed one of these kids to do a little research and report the cast members?

Gregg Henry as Caesar! That's right, Grandpa Quill as Trump. And Corey Stoll as Brutus. So Yellowjacket kills him.

I saw the show last week and it was pretty incredible. They were definitely aiming at Trump, but also those who just want to tear the system down with no better plan. Henry was clearly having a blast, high-fiving people in the front row and doing the Trumpian point and smile thing at the crowd. Elizabeth Marvel was Marc Antony and she blew me away.

They did change one line, saying that Caesar could slay a woman on 5th Avenue and get away with it.

China and California (the 2nd and 6th-largest economies in the world) have signed a climate change and trade accord.

I think I'll start referring to him as President Brown. He's much closer to being a national leader, or even "the leader of the free world" than anyone in North Arkansas (aka Capitol Hill).

It does leave me w/o a title for Twitler. Governor seems too generous. Shift Manager, perhaps?

Mark Harris made the interesting point that Hamilton was developed by and originally performed at the Public, before going on to be the site of Mike Pence's "humiliation" last fall, so there's a sector of the Republican right that has it out for the Public. And also because Oskar Eustice, the artistic director of the Public and of this specific production, is a big time radical who exemplifies a lot of what they hate about the arts. The Public hasn't shied away from taking it to DT, either - just last week, we went to a big panel talking about art and activism with the focus, naturally, on this administration.

But the Public gets a cut of Hamilton's box office and adjusted gross now - about 2.5 million a year - that they're putting in cash reserves, rather than operating budget. And that's just with one production - the more open, like in Chicago, Los Angeles, London, and on tour - they're going to get more. And the Public has similar deals with other shows - chiefly, a Chorus Line, which brings in money for them every year. Pirates of Penzance. Fun Home. Hair. That Championship Season. Normal Heart. Everything they've produced, they get a cut.

So while it's concerning that Delta and BoA are doing their best impressions of Matt Damon in School Ties, I wouldn't be too concerned. This particular production closes in a week before they move on to HAMLET with Oscar Isaac and Keegan-Michael Key and MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, so I expect this to be old news pretty quickly.

There's no way that the lawyers will let Trump testify.  Getting him on the stand is the absolute last thing that should happen if they want to even maintain a hope of surviving this scandal.  I fully expect Trump to  be forced to say 'I want to testify but my lawyers won't let me.'
