On the half hour or so's worth of evidence I saw he didn't spend a whole lot of time at all building that set.

WaPost has a nice article about the new "Comedy Industry"

"Comedy is being taken more seriously now. Top-billing stand-up comedians are treated as public intellectuals."

Ugh.

Yeah, that's not great.

I haven't read the article, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's laid at the feet of Jon Stewart. Also, there's nothing to freak about. There are cycles to these things. Once upon a time, the Beatles began the tract of "rock star as revolutionary". It's not unusual that, in times of political upheaval/uncertainty, that we lean on luminaries outside of the realm of conventional politics.

Also, unlike film and music, stand-up comedy hasn't been gutted as an art form by the internet. There's still a tactile sense to the thing that hasn't been downloaded, remixed, chopped-up, repurposed, and rehashed.

Oh I think that's happening as we speak.

FYI They don't pin it on Stewart: it's more reporting on the Stand up scene.

I'd actually lay it at Louis CK's feet before Stewart's.  Political comedians have always been a thing, but he had his moment where all of a sudden he was not just a stand up, but a philosopher and auteur, and now every comedian wants to be taken that seriously, even if they maybe should be more focused on earning the laughs to back up the rhapsodizing.

Pablo Francisco falls off stage during a weekend show, later has to leave via ambulance - http://www.sacbee.com/entertainment/celebrities/article161645738.html

I've heard a couple of anecdotes about Francisco's drug use. That video is pretty cringe-inducing.

This is 100% why you should see live comedy.

It looks like Pablo Francisco's dates at the Ice House in Pasadena this weekend have been cancelled. That would've been a paparazzi nightmare.

Just tried to watch TJ Miller's HBO special. I made it to the nightmares joke and said "Nope."

This has become the "Comedy Special Recommendation/Warning" Thread.

TJ Miller is not funny. His rise to fame is inexplicable.

I prefer the "Live Performances and Us Who Don't Leave Home Much" Thread.
