Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil 7 is coming out next month, and if the glowing previews are any indication, it's going to more than make up for 5 and 6.  It's a first-person horror game in a derelict plantation mansion, with a focus on exploration and atmosphere to balance out the more traditional action elements.  Ethan, the protagonist, is not a traditional Resident Evil character:  he has no special combat or survival skills and has to rely on what he can find in the mansion to survive while he hides from the insane Baker family.

 

There will be VR support through the PS 4 Pro as well.  This looks excellent.

The demo on PS4 is really nice looking, but will probably wait for a cheap used copy of this. Not because I'm in any doubt of the quality of the game, more that I'm terrible at survival horror that involves stealth/hiding, like I'm in 'squeaky clown shoes' mode. I like the way this looks so different to the previous games, though, especially after the cancellation of Silent Hills...

I'm curious what people think of this series as a whole. Resident Evil 2 and 4 are some of my favorite games of all time. I hold that 4 is revolutionary in its game mechanics, just a flawless engine (for what it's trying to accomplish).

 

So much that 5 and 6 weirdly ape it but add way too many QTE scenes. But I actually dig 5, even if it loses much of its horror angle. The gameplay is clean and the graphics are great, and the co-op between Chris and Sheva feels really vital. 

 

Bringing me to 6. Does anyone know what happened here? I blindbought it in 2012 thinking it would be another great addition to the series, and it's just so damn sloppy. I admit to getting some enjoyment of the Leon segment because it finally feels like a return to survival horror, but it's so frustrating how much control the game has over your character: at times camera angles will be hijacked, extended driving sequences in which you're not steering the vehicle, and very little interaction with the environment (like there's a sequence early on where there's a dead body next to a desk and if you try to walk past it you hit the perfunctory invisible wall). 

 

I appreciate the game is attempting a more cinematic feel, but at times it's like watching a video game rather than playing it. Even the Jake/Sherry portions have some cool segments, namely the snow level, but the parts where the storylines intersect are so frustrating. You mean I have to fight this monster AGAIN? And the less said about the Chris segment, especially the voiceacting, the better. 

 

Again, I appreciate the tight mythology and obvious affection for these characters over the years, but why is 6 such a clusterfuck? And, like me, do you find any enjoyment out of it on any level? And does 5 really have a bad reputation, outside of it being straightforward action instead of horror?

 

As for 7, I'm glad it's getting back to basics and breaking away from ever-escalating international biological incidents.

I remember first reading about Resident Evil 1 in Gamepro magazine.  Wow.  I had a PS1 and a friend of mine let me borrow his copy of the game.  I remember being so obsessed with not using any of the ink ribbons for saves because I didn't want to run out of them.  I made huge head way in one play through until we had a power outage that wiped out all of that progress.  At the time though there was no other game like it and I was completely immersed.  Young teenaged me had no problem with the voice acting.  And yes, like everyone, I totally jumped the first time that dog jumped through the window.  I am absolutely in love with the GameCube remake.  I still have my GC so that I can play the remake, RE4, and Wind Waker.  I really dug the addition of the Lisa Trevor enemy and the expanded history of the mansion.  Plus this game got me again with a good jump scare the first time one of the zombies I thought was dead jumped up and chased me.  

 

What I remember most about Resident Evil 2 was that during the early development of the game there was supposed to be Leon, and a female character that was dressed in a motorcycle racing suit.  At some point in time she was replaced with Claire.  I owned the N64 version of this game.  I never did finish it though, for whatever reason.  I know it was superior to RE1, but I didn't get as immersed in the environments for some reason.  I am hoping the eventual remaster comes out and I can get back into it.

 

I have never played RE3 or Code Veronica.  

 

Resident Evil 4 is my favourite.  What a game.  I was completely obsessed with it.  I made sure I found every single jewel in the game that could fit into the crowns and necklaces so I could maximize the amount of money the merchant would give me.  I purchased every weapon and upgraded it fully.  I made sure I got perfect scores in the shooting galleries (not easy with the controller).  Everything about the game is awesome except for some of the controls, but at the time they were perfectly functional.  Plus the game ended up being way longer than I ever thought it would.  It is still the pinnacle of the series and will most likely never be topped.

 

Resident Evil 5 was a major disappointment.  At the time I was playing it I had just gone through a horrible breakup that absolutely crushed me.  I'm not sure if it's really as bad as it is, but I remember being completely emotionally detached from it.  I appreciated what they tried to do with the daylight gameplay, but it just seemed like a gimmick and it definitely made the game feel more like an action game than a survival horror game.  Maybe one day I'll give it another chance.  I still have it in my collection, but I've soured on the series because....

 

Resident Evil 6 is an epic disaster.  How is it possible that this game actually looks and plays worse than the other games?  I have no idea what Capcom was thinking with the development.  I can't remember what characters were involved in the motorcycle driving scene, but it looked and controlled worse than Ridge Racer did on PS1.  I finished the Chris and Jake campaigns and kept the Leon one until last because I knew I would like it most, but I just could not bring myself to finish the game.  It's terrible.

 

I never played any of the spinoff games, portable games, or on rails games.  I mostly just played the main series.

RESIDENT EVIL: REVELATIONS was solid course-correction after RE6. Well worth checking out.

I forgot Revelations and its sequel exist! They're apparently available on XBox 360, the last console I own.

Resident Evil amazed me on the Saturn, and until Silent Hill shredded me to bits shortly afterwards, was the scariest game I'd ever played. The novelty wore off after that, with a few hours here & there on 2, 3 & Veronica, until I picked up a RE4 gamecube console for peanuts on a whim years after it came out, and was blown away again. I lost interest in 5 after a couple of hours, and gave up on 6 in about twenty minutes, so am really hoping the diminishing returns are halted by the new-look 7. Fingers crossed....

(edit: reading that back has made me realise I only really enjoyed 2 games out of the 7 or 8 I've bought! I guess I must like the idea of the games more than the games themselves...)

For some reason I've never beat RE2, though I made a lot of progress in it when I rented it on N64. Also rented RE3 on PS1, thought it was cool, never went back and beat it. What's up with the half assing it, young me?

 

I was all in on Dreamcast, so I got Code Veronica when that came out. The game was fantastic all the way through, and deserves to be remebered alongside the main numbered series. I'm surprised I managed to beat it, seeing as I wasn't very good at games back then.

 

I was all in on Gamecube, so why didn't I get 0 or any of the REmakes? Dafuq? I guess I'll get REmake 1 on PC now.

 

RE4 I did get when it came out on GC, though. Awesome fuckin game. It was so evocative, some of the creepy early environments even popped up in my dreams once. This is another one I was surprised I beat. Then years later, I read it has secret dynamic difficulty scaling! Bwahahahah. No wonder I beat it.

 

And that's it for me. 5 looked cool, but I never got to play it. I just got the demo for 7 on Xbox, and I thought it was really cool. I'm very interested in the game.

I completely agree.  RE1 was a gold standard for game design.

You can feel this game disintegrate while you play it.  All of the best pacing and plot elements come in the first 10-20%.  By the time you get to the bizarre finale where you're mixing herbs on an elevated platform while fighting yet another tentacle beast, it's just a mishmash mess.

As a single player game, you are right.  The overlapping stories don't necessarily work and the change in tone from story to story are offputting.  As a co-op game, however, it is magnificent.  I played through the entire game with a close friend and we're actually gearing up to do so again.  Everything that is retarded and dumb in single player is a hilarious, howlingly good time in co-op!  Zombie shark!  We laughed for an hour.  The ridiculous plot points?  Never stopped guffawing and cracking jokes.  It was one of the best, if not the best, co-op experiences of my life.  It was like living a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode.

There really is no way to top RESIDENT EVIL 4.  Hell, RE 1-4 are some of the best survival horror games ever made. 

 

Staying up late finishing RE 2-3 in the middle of the night were some of my favorite gaming moments ever.

For me, I would love if Capcom just said fuck it, and instead of remaking RE 2 or HD'ing it, they took everything that was in the 1.5 version (Elsa Walker, some monster concepts, etc) and did a side-story game set during the events of 2 in Racoon City, but with the power of current consoles/pc behind it.

I've finished and its truly horrible.

To me, it was like Capcom decided to cater to the crowd that watch/follow the Resident Evil hollywood movies, and overindulged in all their faults when making the game.

No (finished single player), but I did try it on co-op.

Co-op or not, the game is still a mess; its simply a matter of its plot, action and design; like I said, it takes all the bad things from the movies and turns them into a game.

RE4 managed a perfect balance of action and survival horror, RE5 is a pure action game, but RE6 is neither; its pretty much a mess of gameplay and design that reeks of overindulging in the worse tendencies of its era (QTE, Overlong Sequences, Tonal shift, bad level design) and tries to stretch itself thin attempting to be massive but ending up tedious.

I think the game would had been best just focusing on Chris's initial campaign, and stretching his story over the game.

Chris's startingt campaigns is essentially surviving a warzone were biological horrors are loose, and that would had made for a great scenario, instead we get several different scenarios that are all rehashs of previous games, and by the endgame the whole thing is ridiculous...just like the movies.

At one point during Chris's campaign, I can't remember if it was the snowy village warzone part or the Hong Kong harbour part, but I definitely thought to myself, "This games mechanics are a complete mess." It feels and looks unfinished.

Chris's campaign was the first section I played. Then Jake's.

I'm trying to will myself to finish the Leon campaign but it's just not happening.

I suspect you know this but to be clear it is NOTHING like RE4, it's being compared favorably as a "refreshing reinvention" of the franchise. Basically they're riding the Amnesia, Outlast, Soma, Alien Isolation Silent Hills bandwagon.

Finally got hold of this and played it through - one thing I don't think I could ever do is play this game in VR... My heart couldn't take it! Never been more terrified playing a game than the first couple of hours of this. Great fun.

Yeah, it's a seriously intense horror experience. Capcom finally righted the ship (even though it doesn't actually start to feel like a traditional Resi game until much later). Great stuff.

Oh I started playing this a few weeks ago but haven't gone back to it. Got a little too busy to have a moment to sit down and put the PSVR on at night (when there are no distractions)

I gotta say... on top of the game making me tense, I also fee SUPER vulnerable with that headrig on with the earbuds at night. I feel like someone is gonna sneak in and slit my throat.

Got a nice big jump scare during the opening sequence.

I'm starting playing this in daylight.  I know I'm going to keep playing till the sun goes down and not switch the lights on.

 

There is no-one else in the house but me for 10 days.

Good, because as a flat console game I thought it sucked. Stopped being scary very early and just became irritating.

It was a grind to get through. I picked one ending and have zero interest in seeing how the other played out.

About 10 hours of gameplay. Waste of money, especially when I'm 70+ and counting on Zero Dawn.

Going to trade it on Wednesday for Wipeout.

Haven't felt this disappointed in a game purchase for a very long time.

I must say, when it finally goes full Resident Evil I was just playing it through for the sake of it, and it loses its' tension. But just for the first few hours alone it's one of my favourite horror games I've played. I wish they'd kept it more personal, and stuck to the crazy hillbilly Evil Dead/Chainsaw Massacre vibe of the best bits, but still up there in my top games. Can't wait for Wipeout though....

I finally had a had a chance to pick this up and start playing. I enjoy the setting. That first true boss fight in the garage is hilarious once you figure out what you're supposed to do.

But I'm kind of tired of these games where you don't know if you're actually damaging an enemy or not, or if you should even be shooting certain characters at all. I wish they vocalized some sort of feedback on whether it was useful to waste ammunition on them or not. It's the same complaint I had with The Evil Within.

I'm in the basement section now with the moldy monsters.

That bit frustrated me to fuck as well, with pretty much the same complaints. I very nearly quit, but just persevere through that specific bit and you'll find it levels out (and the ammo/firepower gets a bit more generous as well)

I just completed this on Normal difficulty today.

It reminds me a lot of Resident Evil 1. I swear there are some architectural throwbacks to the first mansion. There are rooms that are very similar in the their layout.

I generally liked this game when it wasn't being just another RE game. I don't know how many times they have to throw bosses at you that have multiple eyeballs as weak spots. That mechanic is getting pretty stale. The other boss fights were okay though.

Apparently the free Chris Redfield DLC is going to be ready for December.

Yeah there are some of those parts where characters pop in from off screen and grab you that are probably really effective.

I'm still on the fence about buying the VR headset. If EA greenlit a Dead Space sequel with that feature it would push me over the edge.

My favourite part of the game was the Happy Birthday tape.
