I liked the film, but I have pretty low standards when it comes to horror flicks. I'd like to know how the ending of the book goes. Do Henry and Duddits defeat Mr. Gray?

Is this a cult classic yet?

Does one person count as a cult? Then yes.

I love this stupid, insane movie.

I don't know if I'm intentionally inserting this into my hazy memory of the film, but does Donnie Wahlberg scream "DUDDITS, YAAY!" as he kills the final alien at the end?

If so, then it should be. There's so much crazy stuff in this movie, from Morgan Freeman's eyebrows to penis-gobbling space eels, that it's hard to believe it ever got made.

Shitty book, though.

"Stop your blatting laddie-buck!"

"This is turning into a double fuckarow! Real Jabba-Nabba!"

"Criminettlies!"

The dialogue is borderline Nadsat at points.

King does have a weird obsession with babytalk-sounding fake languages. The Dark Tower books are also pretty full of that.

I think it's time I finally watch this.

I would kill to have you remember this movie, Sam.

Almost too easy for you, maybe.

Neither version was destined for classic status, but I take issue with this. Fun as the movie was in a train wreck sort of way, I thought the book was at least marginally better, in a serious one.

But then again, I've gone on record as a huge King apologist, so it may just be me. . . .

No, Keith, it's 2. I've loved this crazy flick since I saw the late show on the first day it came out in the theater.

Freeman is batshit, Jane uses a gun as a phone, and Tom Sizemore actually looks youthful rather than looking like he's 55 for most of his career.

This film desperately needs a Rifftrax.

The book is also one of King's worst. Almost self-parody. I give him a bit of a pass for being possibly half-mad on painkillers at the time (I think this is his first post-accident novel), but it's still pretty bad.

DREAMCATCHER, the book, is somewhat of a sequel to IT and TOMMYKNOCKERS, and is the most old-school Steve King horror book since DESPERATION. It is not as great as original era King but it is not as utter shit as much of King's output in the past 20+ years.

The movie, of course, is nowhere near as good as the book, but since the book is not incredibly great per se, but rather just an old time King nostalgia trip, the movie lives up to that in a sense. Most King movies suck, so why shouldn't this one too? But to be fair DREAMCATCHER is better than pretty much every Mick Garris movie. The worst thing about it is the shitty CGI

Thank you for bringing this up. That is one of my pet peeves with King. Solid writer, but his characters will say the most ridiculous shit sometimes. It becomes even more annoying when actors are asked to perform this dialogue in a movie.

Not just you - I'm weirdly attached to this book. It's not even close to King's best, but it's among the first I read and I still like it a lot - I've revisited it quite a few times and it always draws me in.

The film, however, is pretty poor. I could have forgiven it a lot as a fan of the book, but the ending was a fucking mess.

All he would have to do is basically recap the movie, not add anything, and it would still fit in perfectly with his others.

Or he could go the complete opposite route and make a very normal, average version of Dreamcatcher.

The book doesn't have Duddits turning into a fucking alien, so it's already got one up on the film.

It also has the Losers' statue with "Pennywise Lives" graffiti'ed across it. So, there's another point in its favor.

When I read that portion I got hopeful for a sequel to IT, either in Dreamcatcher itself or shortly down the line.

Alas...
At the same time (and to nerd-out over King), it bothered me. The end of "It" makes it clear that the Losers are all losing their memories of what happened and, in fact, forgetting everything about one another. So, what would make them dedicate a statue to Derry's children from the Losers' Club?

Your logic...is hurting me....

Good point, M.

I recall reading somewhere recently that King was contemplating a sequel to one of his novels, 'mostly because I haven't done that before.' If he does this, I'm hoping IT is the novel in question.

He used to talk a lot about a sequel to Salem's Lot, but I guess Father Callahan getting shanghaied into the Dark Tower series might have put an end to that.

I think "It" was pretty much one of his few perfect endings. I'd hate to see him fuck that up. Maybe "Firestarter"? Main character didn't die, huge potential for mayhem with the increase in her already considerable power growing up would entail. . . ?
You know I didn't really mind the book. My biggest complaint is that it's very overlong. But then King does say that it's the first time he wrote longhand in years and couldn't stop himself, so that's why.

The end of the book is so much better than the craziness in the film, though it would've also been a lot harder to make work.
