Quack! Quack! Fulci's "New York Ripper"

I'll be up front with you all. There are still some Fulci flicks I haven't seen, including "New York Ripper."

So, continuing this little Fulci fest started here at the Rotten household this week (beginning with Blue Underground's DVD "Contraband" - Fulci's anti-drug/Italian gangsta epic), I watched "NY Ripper" last night.

Holy shit, talk about a movie that gradually goes downhill. Granted, we've got gore coming out the wazoo, but plot-wise it gets a bit too random for my tastes.

How does this film hold up with the hardcore Fulci fanatics? I'm very curious to know.

(I watched "Zombie" minutes after "Ripper" to wash the taste of that flick out of my mouth )

Well as one of the aforementioned Fulci nuts who owns every Fulci movie on DVD I have to agree with your assessment. Even though the last thing Fulci movies are known for are good scripts this one goes downhil faster than most. The gore is great though. Still, my favorite Fulci movie, better than Zombi, is The Beyond!

That was a reference to New York Ripper's killer. He quacks like a duck, remember?

Oh yeah, sorry didn't hit me it's been awhile.

Oh, wow. I remember this one had me cracking up. It's plot was all over the place. And for some reason, 'Ripper' reminded me of a whacked out episode of 'Emergency!'. The gore is top notch, but the duck voice killer... wow... just... wow...

What struck me as completely bizarre was the subplot involving the nympho wife who found someone to give her a "foot job" in a downtown bar.

What?!

Foot jobs are cool!

I forgot about that! HA!!!

I remember feeling very guilty because during a couple of the more violent assault scenes, I could only picture Donald Duck doing the crimes. I had to laugh, but the bizarre image and the corruption of a beloved childhood icon was enough to give me brain convulsions.

I wonder if anyone at Disney has ever seen this?

New York Ripper is the hard stuff alright. More effective as a brutal shocker than as giallo.

The talking duck bit was Fulci's variation/rip on the Black Christmas heavy breather's bizzare rantings. It worked much better in Bob Clark's movie... The duck voice is only semi-creepy.

seen that one yearsago and i'm sure it was not an uncut version cause i don't a'membeno foot job but the....ahem....nipple scene stillhas me cringing. Weended up for a like a week afterwards going around doing the killers quack though 9if that was worth anything)

I haven't seen this yet.

But I will bet you hard cash that it's vastly superior to Fulci's version of White Fang.

I actually like this one a lot. Sure, the plot is lame, but it's a Fulci flick. I actually found this one to be creepy. Not my fave Fulci flick, but 5,000 times better than Manhattan Baby.

Complete and utter shit.

NYR on the other hand, is at least entertaineing, if not good. The torture scene is pretty brutal, and I actually found myself to be "creeped-out" by the duck voice.

i personally love NY Ripper. i thought the way he actually explained the duck-voice was cool rather than the usual Fulci way of just leaving things unanswered and confusing (like in House by the Cemetery. why does everyone recognize him? whats up w/ the babysitter? why is Bob so god damn annoying?). and of course, the gore is top notch.

one of my favorite Fulci flicks. its no "the Beyond", but what is?

I have good memories of this one from when I was a kid, plus it's got Franco Nero. Typically for Fulci it's violent as hell even though it's supposed to be a film for kids. NYR has great gore but the dubbing is atrocious, the story sucks, the foot job bitch is ugly as sin and the donald duck voice is just lame.
