Audio Scaries

I just read the Creature Corner news for today (finally) and the bit about the Tales From the Crypt audio stories sounds pretty cool.
Anyone here ever listen to Suspense! or Lights Out or any of the other cool old creepy radio shows? I think this TFTC thing may actually turn out to be a great idea, hopefully people will get into it.

It seems a little odd to me. I have a HUGE collection of the old EC comics like "Tales From The Crypt" "The Haunt of Fear" and "The Vault of Horror" and i think that they are based too much around visuals to make a decent radio show. EC comics did have a publication called "Crime-suspense Stories" and i could definetly see something like that working well with audio only, but zombies and werewolves in sound only? No sir, i dont like it.

Go to your local library and try to find some of the Suspense episodes (The House in Cypress Canyon is soooo damned scary I LOVE it) to borrow, you will not be disappointed. And the BBC did the Lord of the Rings & Hitchhiker's Guide (its original format actually) in audio as radio shows with full sound effects and a full cast.

If done correctly an audio show can be quite good.

This is actually kinda fun. Some are hit and miss, but my favorite hands down is "Fare Tonight Followed by Increasing Clottiness". Almost worth it for that one alone. An Indian cab driver meets up with an over-enthusiastic vampire hunter, Dr. Egbert Fleagle (played amazingly hilarious by Keith David), in a bad part of town. I want a film series of Keith David killing bloodsuckers STAT!

Do yourself a favor and dig up that track atleast.

A little niche, but the Dr Who audio drama Chimes of Midnight was actually a fairly effective ghost story.

GirlCreature. I haven't read about the "Tales from the Crypt" audio stories, I'll look for that article. The idea sounds cool.

I listen to a number of classic old time radio horror and suspense shows such as the shows you mentioned. There is a great site called "The Monster Club" http://www.themonsterclub.com/

You should become a member. They have a treasure trove of old radio shows. One in particular that I would say to look for is "What Was It" from an old show called "Haunted" from 1980. It's such a well done story.

FYI: This thread is about 8 years old. The article in question is probably MIA. I just resurrected it because it was relevant. "GirlCreature" hasn't been around in like 4 years.

I should have raised my old thread from the dead instead.

I got into those old radio shows eons ago. Back when I was a kid, they were still doing first runs of "CBS Mystery Theater" on the local affiliate. I found a book in the school library called "Tune In Yesteryear" which was a reference for ever radio program that had aired up until the mid-70s or so.

Agnes Moorehead in "Sorry, Wrong Number" made my face melt.

I'm a huge fan of OTR (old-time radio), and the great thing is that so much is public domain nowadays (archive.org has an enormous collection). Among the best:

Three Skeleton Key with Vincent Price.
The Thing on the Fourble Board - Quiet, Please
The House in Cypress Canyon - Suspense
Evening Primrose - Suspense
The Hitchhiker - Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater
The War of the Worlds - a classic

Not horror, but excellent nonetheless:

the Fall of the City - The Columbia Workshop
A Passenger to Bali - more Mercury Theater goodness

I also know a place that has many hard-to-find BBC audio programs, like adaptations of John Wyndham's works (Day of the Triffids, The Midwich Cuckoos, The Kraken Wakes) and much, much more, although you have to deal with some strict rules (3 downloads per day, one at a time) and low bandwidth. Still worth it, IMO.

Even if you don't listen to anything else, listen to Three Skeleton Key.

Ha ha ha ha. Thanks for the info Darkmite. I didn't even look at the date of that GirlCreature post. Well, perhaps the MonsterClub link will help someone else.
