TV Horror Hosts

Does anyone still have a Horror movie personality on tv in their area? I live in the Tampa area, and when i first moved down here about 11 years ago there was a guy on Dr. Paul Bearer, but he died. Then there was Joe Bob Briggs on TNT, but that got cancelled. (fucking network execs!!) So are there any shows like these were you're all located? How are they?\

This has been on my mind quite a bit lately. My friends and i are making our first movie, and we had an idea if we could ever get a DVD release, to put on the DVD as an extra a way you could play the movie either straight through, and also have it so that the movie will stop at certain points and have somebody act as a host for it. You know introduce it, then cut off somewhere in the middle and talk about it a little. Crack a few morbid jokes here and there, etc.

That's a great idea. I always had the secret hope that every Hollywood movie would come with a MST3K toggle, personally.

the best? THE BEST?

"From hells heart, Ghoulardi, the Ghoul, Houlihan, Big Chuck, Little John and I strike at thee!"

Bit o' paraphrasing for relevance.

I grew up watching Son of Svengooli, he was from the Chicago area (Berwyn!).

ZeroIllusion,
I'm from Tampa Bay too; we seem to have a lot in common! We moved here back in 1970, and I grew up with horror host Dr. Paul Bearer from the '70s to the '90s. He was the greatest. I'm actually somewhat of an authority on Dr. Paul Bearer. For more info on the classic host, I'd suggest visiting a website that is produced by a friend of mine; it's called "Nolan's Pop Culture Review", and is chock-full of info on DPB: www.crazedfanboy.com

Here's a show for you...on Friday nights (actually it's EARLY Sat. mornings) from 3:07am - 5:07am there's a show on channel 12 (ABC) called "Off Beat Cinema". It's the coolest. It's not quite a horror host show, instead there are 3 hip "beatniks" who host horror movies in the "Hungry Ear Cafe". The movies they show are great. This Saturday's is "Son of Godzilla". In the past they've had on: Horror Hotel, House of 7 Corpses, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Prehistoric Women, The Monster and the Woman (aka The Four-Sided Triangle), The Brainiac, and a bunch of other cool horror/sci-fi flicks. OBC is a syndicated show out of Buffalo, NY and is well worth never missing! Set that VCR!!!

Lastly, I'm glad to hear your're making your own horror film. I'm a filmmaker also. I wrote, produced, and directed a short horror film entitled "Filthy" (which you may have heard of around town) which is about a gorgeous TV reporter who gets trapped in a "filthy" house over Halloween night with a sadistic, crazed family. "Filthy" was filmed on Super 16mm with a budget of $40,000, and features lots of great characters and plenty of thrills & gore. "Filthy" is currently in post-production, but should be completed within the next two months.

Check your CHUD e-mail when you get a chance. I'll be sending you some contact info today. "Break a leg" on your film; it sounds cool!

I already replied your email. Thanks for all the information. You're movie sounds pretty cool, i'll have to check it out when it's done. It's always fun to see new horror. I'll try and catch that show, but i'm 20 and live with my parents, and all the TV's in the house are on Dish Network so we got other cities local stations. So i may or may not have the Tampa area ABC.

Once again I get to talk about this guy:

Dr. Shock

This guy is fantastic. In fact this Saturday he's showing some of his own films in a local theater here in Toledo.

That guy is the one reason why I detest the entire concept of the "horror host". As irony would have it, however, I'm working on a cable access show that revolves around that very idea. Luckily there are enough creative people involved that will make it a lot cooler than you'd expect.
