Beyonce

Showing my age and bias here, and this probably the wrong group of people to ask for a number of reasons, but I'm not sure I fully understand why she's been raised to the status of a celestial being. That's not to say that she isn't a talented performer, but I think I missed the moment where she went from being a pop star to royalty.

I don't think this will actually help you... but hahahahahaha

the way this link is organized is so funny

I also don't get the specifics of Beyonce's stardom.  It just seems to be... and I've just accepted it while not actually indulging in it at all (because I don't follow music).

My opinion on this is worthless! But it's something that interests me as well.

If I had to guess I'd say it's a mix of her having already had a long career including a fair few classic songs and videos that have stood the test of time, being married into hip hop royalty, and fulfilling a cultural desire to continue the long tradition of female African American musical icons going all the way back to Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holliday, Aretha Franklyn etc.

Plus her recent solo records have been quite ambitious in terms of both concept and the way they were released, and got rapturous critical approval (though, not having heard them I can't speak to whether this is entirely earned or influenced by her 'royal' status)

In general I think people like her and see her as a strong role model at a moment in time where people are looking for role models. Fair enough.

Expectedly DOA thread. I'm just a grumpy geezer whose best Beyonce experience was watching a drag queen perform to Single Ladies for a New Year's Eve party at a gay club a few years back.

I could have just as easily made a thread about Taylor Swift or whoever.

I was talking to a young lady at work who didn't know who David Bowie was. In unrelated news, she's dead now.

1. Wait, what?

2. In probably not major but nevertheless at least slightly interesting co-incidences, Bianca Lawson (who could have been Cordelia Chase in Buffy the Vampire Slayer - I couldn't see it after here appearance in Buffy but then I saw her in American Horror Story and could totally see it I guess that's why they call it acting) ... well, her father married Beyoncé's mother so they're step-sisters now.

Also, Bianca Lawson might actually be a genuine vampire or other immortal being.

I am not super familiar with her music, but it seems like a lot of women in my office like it because feminism.

I like Crazy in Love - the dance, the production and arrangement  and the vocal rhythms.
