So, I doubt I'll be present much in the Multiplayer...but this Single Player campaign looks AWESOME and worthy of my money alone.

High ping rates are murder on me down here. Fastest I can get Overwatch is 199ms and that keeps me from actually trying Competitive on that.

Unless they get dedicated Africa servers for this like they did for Battlefield 1 in which case I will be BALLS DEEP on this motherfucker (once I get my PC upgraded that is).

I'm with Codename.  For me, it's just that I suck at these twitch multiplayer deathmatch/CTF games.  And really I don't have too much interest in getting better at them.  It's weird how little I played of the last Battlefield, seeing how much I loved the original two.  But it just seemed like the same old run and shoot people, but in a pretty Star Wars skin.  I just kind of got tired of it quickly.  At least a single player campaign, I wouldn't be getting killed every five seconds, and have some sort of goal beyond not getting killed every five seconds.  That's not to say I got no enjoyment at all from it, but I was much more into something like Destiny that gave me many more play options beyond PvP.

You know that storyline for the single player campaign would have great for a single player game. As far as BF2 goes, it looks great and all but give me a single player experience to sink my teeth into.

The strides forward are all great and wonderful and stuff...  But I wanna see a Conquest mode in multiplayer, which they have confirmed is not in this game.

MASSIVE improvements over the first game all around...  But it won't finally truly be totally 1000 percent the game I want until you give me something other than a fancy dressed up Rush mode.  Fuck rush mode.  I want to be able to run around with a squad and go for flags, and use team work and have a dynamic interesting Star Wars battle.  Rush mode is just a meat grinder that slowly progresses the grind from one side of the map to the other and it always has been and always will be, nothing but a nice alternative to Conquest mode for when you're bored.

Modern game titles make me feel like a confused old person sometimes. I see people on the internet getting all worked up over Battlefront II and I'm like: hold on a second, wasn't... there already... a Star Wars Battlefront 2? What year is this? Who's the president??

Paul...  I don't want to alarm you, but I think you might be the first person in the history of the world to make that observation...  We need to get you to the Pentagon right away!!!

I'm honestly hoping they'll let you play as Jar Jar in this, even if it's DLC. I mean, you can play as laughable fuck-up KyDoh so why not Jar Jar?

Because Kylo is fucking awesome and cool and terrific and Jar jar is not?

I'm confused...you want the same experience as it offers...but with half the content ripped out?

The old Battlefronts got wiped away along with the rest of the old EU.  So now this makes for 3 new female protagonists in the new official canon.  At least this lady has a bit of color it seems.  Its like for all the talk of being progressive for the new movies having women at the front, they are still white women.  When in doubt, the white person is still the lead.

These are your first baby steps...

As for the game, I might get it this time if can skew closer to the old ones.  Is it too much to ask that it looks that damn good while having seamless ground to air to space battles, and better gameplay?  I played the first one's beta and didn't ever bother with the full release.  Just too shallow and downgraded from before.  And when you see the leaked footage for the cancelled Battllefront 3... oh what could have been.  Especially the single player.

Woah, sorry for all the tab spaces fellas.  Don't know what happened there, and when I go to edit it the post is full of html code jibberish.  Oh well.

I posted this in the 'I still DO love Star Wars' thread before realising there was a Battlefront II thread -

As someone who grew up as the prequels were coming out, and who loves them for what they are - while knowing that they're nowhere near as good as the originals - it's very cool to see that EA's marketing the game so heavily around prequel elements. So much of Disney's initial 'don't-mention-the-war' attitude about those films was ignorant of the fact that most Star Wars fans under thirty like those movies fine.

I loved the original Battlefront games but didn't buy the 2015 one because I didn't have the hardware, and it didn't look nearly big enough to warrant upgrading for its sake. This looks a lot better - like Battlefront II (2005) with better graphics and more complex levels. If it has an Instant Action mode, I'll probably get it.

Putting in squads again is huge. The first game felt aimless.

Making all the DLC free as well is a welcome change. I guess they realised that fracturing your player base to hell and back isn't the best way to guarantee a game's longevity.

And tearing through shit with Darth Maul looks fun as fuuuuuuuck.

Gonna be all over that for the weekend.

So, does this thing still have Pay To Win Loot Boxes or have they come to their motherfucking senses yet?

You can earn all those loot box rewards in game by playing. So it's not a real Pay to Win scenario at least.

I'm just in it for the campaign, and hopefully also the ability to fly the ships in arcade mode. I'd be up for co-op too, if it has it.

I should add that Battlefield 1 has the same system. And I've been watching my brother play and it really doesn't look like it has much of an effect on the game.

Think about this:

You and I play the same ten matches. You get your free loot box after each match and get cosmetics. I spend £500 on loot boxes until I FINALLY get the legendary item which gives me a 5% damage reduction for sixteen seconds (this is an actual unlockable ability). We meet up in the matches and hit each other the same number times, but you lose because I have my damage reduction which I essentially paid for. I mean, you might also get it in a day, month or year of playing too, so I guess that's cool but it's still a bullshit mechanic in a multiplayer game which rewards those willing to gamble their money.

If they haven't fixed this, they can just fuck off.

That's certainly one way to look at it.

And I don't think you're wrong. But to play Devil's Advocate for a minute, another way would be that it gives those who work long hours and only get a few hours to play each night a better chance vs. someone who no-lifes the game 8 hours a day.

Again, it's the same system that Battlefield uses. My brother plays that game a shitload. And I've watched him dominate in that and he hasn't spent a dime on the game's microtransactions and has never felt that the game treats him unfairly because of it. I agree microtransactions are fucking shit and I will not support them, but if all the DLC is free (it is) and this is how they keep the game running as a cost and none of the items are paid exclusives (yet) then if I'm being honest...I wouldn't mind it that much.

Downloading the beta now. If you see Jacob_Singer_50 online, feel free to frag away.

68% done.

And I've been drinking since 13:00 so if you see some Battle Droid or Clone Trooper lurching around the map...that's a-me!

Alas, I'll be on the Africa servers. Which, by the way, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate EA for creating.

Be sure to enable DirectX 12 if you're playing on pc. It's not the default.

BETA VERDICT: This shit was fun as hell. MILES better than the Battlefront 1 Beta. Starfighter Assault is almost worth the full price on its own because HOLY FUCKING SHITBALLS I'M IN AN AMAZING LOOKING STAR WARS DOGFIGHT that was sooooooooooooooo much fun...when I could get games which I struggled a bit with on that mode.

Points system being used in regular matches works really well as well. Feels fair and gives anyone a chance to rock out with the Special Characters. Cleaned up as Han in one match which felt great. Game runs like a dream. Fuck but I love Frostbite as an engine. I really do.

I don't know if I'll buy this on launch. Because I've got Destiny 2 and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus coming up to keep me busy. But down the line? Definitely.  Really enjoyed my time with it...even if I SUCKED for most of it. Except Starfighter which I'm actually not that bad at. :p

Battle droids are brainless cannon fodder. McNooj is a filthy casual. Would someone kindly mod the PC version to have the battle droids say "Nooj Nooj" instead of "Roger Roger"?

Pew pew you casual bony pleb hunks of junk!

It tickled me how wimpy the "super" battle droids sounded. You see them being all yoked compard to the other bony butts, and then they speak. I expected them to sound like Cylons.

"By your command. Nooj Nooj."

I think a cool thing about these Battlefield/Battlefront type games is that it doesn't matter much if you do suck. Games are so massive that you don't really have as much pressure on you than you do in a Overwatch type game. Just try and do your part!

A real shame. Angry Joe calls this a great game ruined by one of the worst pay-to-win loot box systems he's ever come across.

Yet another good reason to avoid competitive multiplayer.

You got a pretty decent stream of loot boxes in the beta. I was always getting stuff just for playing. But eh, I don't want to defend the system cause I think microtransactions can get fucked. I just didn't feel bothered by it while playing.

Wow, that video is pretty bonkers - and it's the third or fourth video I've watched explaining the same problem.  Battlefield 1 used the same system and you could get a pretty good loadout just playing the game a few weeks and getting crates.  Battlefront is a different story - good load-outs are essential, but in SWBF1 they're pretty easy to save up for.

Looking at that video is pretty nuts.  I'm the first to admit I'll pay the whole $5 to skip air vehicle unlocks on BF4 ... there's no fucking way I'm gonna gamble money to get those unlocks - 40% increase on hull damage with legendary cards that you have to roll over and over for, 99 cents a pop?!  Reduce cool down on turrets!  Get the fuck out of here!  Hard pass.  I'll play Stardew Valley on my Switch.

As I said: it's a shame. This actually could have gotten some money out of me (and still might once a substantial sale comes around). For the time being, Destiny 2 will have to fulfil my shooter needs. That game may not be perfect but at least it only encourages you to spend money on cosmetics.

Just wait for a sale to at least play the campaign and arcade mode. The rng loot grind pay to win microtransaction gambling encouragement simulator online mode can get to fuck.

Well that was an odd way to finally answer the "Who are Rey's parents?" question.

Nah - all there is to link them to Rey is the fact that they're parents of a daughter born sometime between ROTJ and TFA.

- Neither exhibits any Force stuff.

- Neither does anything to suggest they'd dump/hide their child in the ass-end of nowhere.

- (A less important one) The actress playing the mother is Indian-American, where British Rey is white as you can get.

- (The most important reason) There's no way they answer that in a videogame, however big budget.

You’re probably right, which makes all the vagueness toward it that much more puzzling.

What's the single player/non-multiplayer experience like, can you fly ships in it, and is this whole loot box fandango relevant to it?

I have no intention of playing online multiplayer, so I'm just looking for an update of my 2005 Battlefront II experience coupled, hopefully, with some up to date space fighter action. I mean, I can just play the original games on my PC but I'm up for better eye candy if it's a comparable single-player experience.

The campaign isn’t terribly long and you can feel it’s primarily built out of multiplayer maps. Still, I enjoyed where the story went and how it allowed you to test out various character types.

Loot boxes don’t play a role, but cards do — you’ll open them up as you go and be allowed to choose your preferred loadout (to a controlled degree). You get to fly ships on both sides (which is a fun improvement). There are also individual missions you can take on outside the story that open up others, which also have tiers of difficulty that encourage you to go back and replay. They have offline-only :/ split-screen co-op, too, like last time.

I’m not a big multiplayer guy but I played quite a bit of the first one, so I don’t know if I’d recommend based on the campaign-only without waiting for some kind of discount.

Gotcha, thanks. Between Rise of the Empire and Galactic Conquest on my old Battlefront II, and Rogue Leader on the Gamecube, sounds like I'm good until the new one comes down in price.

I bought this.  I like it so far!

After watching the Angry Review I suspect I won't be so stoked.
