Injustice 2

Thread Starter

Just gonna start a thread instead of clogging up the WTF Are You Playing one.

The quibbles first: The story fell really flat for me.  Some of the lines were worth a chuckle, but I'm just so sick of DC properties across all media confusing bleakness with poignancy and gravity.

SPOILERS:

Warning: Spoiler (Click to show)
I've said elsewhere that Alt-Superman as a bloodthirsty villain gets really old. There's a compelling case for "Do the ends justify the means?" when it comes to superheroes, but this Superman doesn't make it. The story wants it both ways: they want a power-mad Superman ("This world is mine!") and they want sympathy for him for losing Lois to the Joker. It just doesn't work. And hints toward his redemption mid-game become disappointing when they basically become a fake-out at the end. I'm not even going to get into alt-Wonder Woman being a lovelorn secondhand rose pining away for Supernazi.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
And the lip service to hope and redemption for Harley Quinn is laughable.  Batman, whose marginal arc in the story is to expand his circle of trust, trusts her unquestioningly at the beginning of the story with Brother Eye, even deflecting Green Arrow's suspicions that a former apprentice of the DC Universe's preeminent homicidal maniac might not be the best ally to entrust with access to literally all data ever.

But you don't play a fighting game for the story. The game itself--I love it. I suck at it. But I love it. The graphics are beyond good--nearly photorealistic in some of the cutscenes and even some of the Clashes. The in-game banter shows a deep love for the DC Universe: Darkseid is auditioning Cheetah for his Furies when they match up, for example.

Haven't dived too far into the gear system, but I'm sure it'll take up a significant portion of my free time in the coming months.

Maining Supergirl, seriously interested in Cheetah and Captain Cold. Mained Catwoman in the last game, and she looks just as strong in this one for my button-mashing playstyle.

I am down for matches with anyone who sees me online. PSN username is Loki-Goat.

I have found that Harley is good for a button mashing playstyle, too, as well as Green Arrow.

Oddly (to my mind), Flash is not.

Interested in trying Robin after he nearly beat me to a pulp in story mode.

Was pleased to discover that the characters do gain XP when you use them in story mode.  For some reason I assumed that would not be the case.

Missing a few faces from Injustice 1 that I'd like to see back, but otherwise the roster is at least interesting.  Maybe more so with the "prestige skins" (curious how many of those we end up with).

Curious to see how deep the customization goes and how well you can really do varying costume combinations to create comic/movie-accurate looks.  I saw a demo-fight (waiting a while on the start screen) with a Batman that looked a whole lot like Batman Begins.

Yeah, Green Arrow was my go-to for a while. His moves and combos are pretty easy for a novice to pull off. Was great to hear Alan Tudyk back without Adam Baldwin as Green Lantern soiling the works. Not that I have a problem with Baldwin's performance--I just prefer not to think about GamerGate while I'm playing games. Wonder if that had anything to do with it.

And Robert Englund plays Scarecrow!

I can't time the move- and bounce cancels off to save my life. Maybe it's an aging reflex thing.

Englund is Scarecrow?  That's awesome, did not know that.

*Looks up on IMDB*  Holy shit!  Jeffrey Combs as Brainiac, too!

Oh, I forgot to mention that. He does an amazing job, too.

I'm not really well-versed in fighting games or online play in general. Is there a way to create a room that only your friends can join for matches? Not really interested in playing people I don't know, and I want some coworkers/friends to play together in a group. Figured somewhere here might know instead of me fiddling around for hours.

Absolutely loving this game. Love that they gave us so much to do in single player which feels rare nowadays. Multiverse is a godsend.

And the gear. MY GAWD, the gear. Such a simple but addicting feature. Just made my best yet for Green Arrow...

Want to max him out to 20 then start working on Flash.

Hotseat mode.

The designs seem really on point in this.

Thinking about picking this up. Any guilds up and running on PS4 or XBox?

I have a guild on PS4. As soon as I figure out how to invite people to it, you'd be in.

I picked it up for PS4! It was meant to be.

Hit me up at Deets327.

Excellent! Be on the lookout for an invite from Loki-Goat Sunday.

Guild name is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
I am playing on PS4, too, if you want to shoot an invite to COULD432 on there.

There's no option for me to invite people, but there is a way for me to accept applications.

The guild is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, ID 81GE7.

I'll shoot an application over lunch - more interested in the multi-verse stuff than multiplayer (those that know me shouldn't be to surprised by that) but some friendly throw-downs could be fun.

Hit level 20 with Aquaman (found him surprisingly easy to use) - been deciding who to level next. Robin clearly is going to take some skill to use well. Catwoman is fun, Supergirl has her upsides, but there are few things that annoy me with her. Haven't spent much time with others, but I'll get there.

It's almost too easy for me to win with Supergirl against the Medium AI, but I'm not good enough to beat the Hard AI consistently yet. But I'm addicted to her, so I haven't explored the other characters too much. I keep thinking I'm cheating by using her in online matches, that she must be broken, because I beat the majority of comers--at least those that can't string together 50-hit combos.

There are special guild multiverse challenges that will net your guild the rewards you get. Best of both worlds!

This is pretty damn enjoyable, I must say. Even though playing against Catwoman or Harley Quinn in story mode is obnoxious as hell.

The Multiverse mode is definitely a blast, and the gear system is every bit as addicting as everyone says. Oddly enough, the characters I'm most efficient with are Green Lantern and Blue Beetle. Lantern is fun a mid-level character with decent combos and a bitchin' super move. I took to him right away.

And his throw is the best in the game, hands down. I laugh every time I see it.

The one with the rivets? Yeah, it's great. I also love how he can grab someone in mid air with the ring and toss them.

Cheetah and Supergirl can both be exceedingly painful in story mode too.  Also Black "I vaguely wave my hand and you get electrocuted at seemingly any range" Adam.  At least for me.

Also holy shit Brainiac.  Something tells me he probably doesn't hit that hard when I use him....

Supergirl was annoying in the fight between her and your choice of Blue Beetle or Firestorm. But once I gave up and switched to Blue Beetle, I breezed right through it.

Is it just me or are some characters just really lackluster and like lame ducks? Firestorm feels useless, as does Bane. Whereas other characters appear to be weak sauce until you get used to them and figure them out (like Black Canary). The game feels a bit lacking in the balance department.

There are characters who are more versatile and others who are more specific. Bane lives or dies on your ability to get up close to your opponent. I'm sure Firestorm has some specialty, but I haven't given him much attention because his dialogue and voice actor irritate me.

davedbc proved to me I am wholly reliant on Supergirl for my winning streak, so I've been experimenting with other characters.

I cannot get a handle on Black Canary or Cheetah; both have a super cool move set, but BC needs to anticipate your opponent's moves more than others and Cheetah needs to get in SO CLOSE.

Who are you guys playing?

I've really only cruised through story mode, though I did the Darkseid multiverse world (Darkseid is about as beefy as you'd expect) and have fiddled with Batman in the Multiverse as well.  More to earn levels than because I really enjoy him/like his moveset.

From what I recall from story mode I really liked Supergirl as well.  Superman wasn't bad either.  Aquaman also seemed pretty strong.  Canary seems like she'd be crazy good if mastered but I think she might have the highest learning curve of all of them.

I've noticed my mother boxes LOVE giving me Epic Joker Gear.  I don't know why, but I suppose I'll have to level him a bit to try some of it out.

Oh and random side note:  If you care at all about the story, play through that first, even aside from gaining a few levels on all the characters you play, if you play in other modes, certain major story elements will be spoiled in pre-fight dialogue.

I'll join that guild. I'm using Darkseid and Catwoman most right now, even as I mostly spread my time trying to get a handle on everyone.
I'm mainly focusing on Catwoman and Canary (as a huge Dead or Alive fan, the latter's counter-heavy style works really well for me) with a bit of Supergirl, Batman, and Black Adam sprinkled in. Robin intrigues me.

Yeah, though I find it weird that there really does seem to be two "Robins" built into the game, or more accurately there's a Damian-Robin and a Damian-Nightwing, and their fighting styles are actually fairly different (sword vs. staff).

But unless I missed something, there's no playable version of Damien-Nightwing.

Yeah, that was weird... I thought Nightwing was Grayson, until everyone kept calling Bruce his dad.

It's not the best written game. Fun, though.

I'll be in New York City till next Tuesday, so I may not get to accept your invite until my return. Not ignoring you!

Send my application to the guild today.
Can't promise to be online a lot, but I'll try make sometime once in a while

I want to get a CHUD King of the Hill or Tournament match set up sometime this week. Who's in?

I love this game more than any other fighting game I've played, but man, does the inventory management need more than a little work. Options to sort by body part, level, and effects would be a godsend.

I'm in for that.
Haven't played enough, but I'm game if it fits my schedule.
Any rules on controllers? I use a Hori Fighting Commander for retro games and fighting games, and some people frown on that.

No rules--unless you handily beat us all repeatedly, in which case you'll be cheating.

Super casual.

How's Wednesday at 7:00 Central time sound? My week is pretty open, but managing schedules can be a nightmare.

I  dont think it gives me any advantage; I mainly use it because I have easily inflmated joints, and it helps me to use other controllers aside from the dualshock:

19:00 CT is 20:00 here, which cuts it a bit close for me on wednesday; 20:00 CT would be perfect, but i understand if it cant happen.

I can work with that, but it might be late for Arjen if he's still on the East Coast. I'll let him weigh in.

"Guys, I haven't played in a week! I swear!"

AKA davedbc

LOL. I really hadn't and fully expected to be trounced on by pretty much everybody last night. Call it muscle memory even if I couldn't get Robin's combos to string - well, pretty much at all.

Still, good games last night and really did enjoy it - so practice up  - since we'll be meeting on the mountaintop soon I'm sure.

Now if you'll all excuse me - somebody keeps referring to me as Tenno and needs to be addressed :)

Supergirl's flying teleport and Atrocitus's Blood Tornado moves haunted me later that night.

It was Mortal Kombat II on the arcade all over again, guys. Only this time losing didnt cost me a pocketful of quarters.

Thanks!
