Figured I would start a new thread because A) it's time and B) it allows me to forward this shocking news: Bob Stoops is retiring - http://newsok.com/source-ou-coach-bob-stoops-retiring/article/5551964

Wow.

Holy balls. That is crazy. I'm so neck deep in summer lax and work I barely have time to even catch NFL shit. Well, good for him for not getting burned out.

Holy shit, it's like 6-7 weeks to college football, folks. FSU/Alabama is sold out. I will be DragonConning that night, IN ATLANTA, so I'm sure I will see some semblance of the game around my drunken con stumbling.

Ole Miss football coach Hugh Freeze has resigned:

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/ole-miss-coach-hugh-freeze-resigns-amid-explosive-new-information/

Quote:
Ole Miss announced Thursday night that coach Hugh Freeze has resigned, effective immediately, following a "pattern of personal misconduct." Matt Luke will serve as the Rebels' interim coach.

While the resignation is sudden, it is not without reason.

"This is a sad day for the University of Mississippi. ... Coach Freeze resigned this afternoon after confirming to Ross and me a pattern of personal misconduct inconsistent with the standards we expect from the leader of our football team," explained Ole Miss chancellor Jeffrey Vitter in a press conference. "... We cannot accept the conduct in his personal life that we have discovered. ... This matter is totally unrelated to the NCAA case."

The Rebels have publicly stood behind Freeze even through the NCAA investigation that has resulted in the finding of major violations and a postseason ban for the 2017 season. According to USA Today, a "one-minute call made from Freeze's University-issued phone to a number associated with a female escort service" was brought to light as a part of the university's ongoing legal battle with former coach Houston Nutt. CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd has confirmed this report.

Freeze claims the call was a "misdial," and sources confirm this is also the explanation he has given to his superiors. "I've got no idea, to be honest," Freeze told Yahoo Sports when asked about the call. "I was in an 813 area code and that was a 313 number, I think that might have been a misdial. I don't think there was even a conversation. There's nothing to it."

When athletic director Ross Bjork received that excuse from Freeze, he decided to follow up.

"We initially attributed this call to a misdialed number. As part of our core values in running the athletics program, we have an obligation to do the right thing, so we proactively looked into the rest of his phone records," he explained. "In our analysis, we discovered a pattern of conduct that is not consistent with our expectations as the leader of our football program. As of yesterday, there appeared to be a concerning pattern."

(Stealing this joke from KNBR radio's Tom Tolbert)

Ah, the ol' "butt-dial a hooker' scenario.

SEC coaches are also required to be extra-pious, which makes their inevitable corruption all the more embarrassing. Of course, SEC fans are nothing if not delusional, so the "Houston Nutt framed him" theory is making the rounds.

Lane Kiffin is following Ole Miss players and official school accounts on Twitter. Leaving for Ole Miss without coaching a game at Florida Atlantic would be the Kiffin-est thing ever.

Oh that would be delicious.

This excellent recap by Spencer Hall on the Freeze debacle is worth a read - https://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/2017/7/21/16008350/hugh-freeze-meets-a-snare

Quote:

The reason we know all this in the first place: Their ex-coach, inaccurately blamed by Freeze for the NCAA case he was facing, got the phone records by public records request. Houston Nutt knew to do that because he’d been torched by by a FOIA of his phone records ten years earlier at Arkansas. He’s working a defamation lawsuit against Ole Miss for Freeze’s allegations against him, and for everything else that happened after his firing. Somehow in all this, Houston Nutt just got Hugh Freeze fired, and evidently wanted Hugh Freeze fired, and really doesn’t stand to benefit from it beyond a simple but brutal piece of transactional revenge.

He just wanted blood, and he got it, and that’s probably all he’ll get until his suit gets settled.

In all this, that’s the most shocking thing. Not the extremely theatrical man of God being a philandering hypocrite, since that’s a storyline so tired it crosses over into reliable archetype. Not Ole Miss stepping facefirst into a tree shredder, since that’s the entire history of Ole Miss football. Not the administrative fallout from a coach being less than truthful and embarrassing the administration, since that’s happened like, every year for the entirety of college football’s history. Not even the churchy squeamishness about sex getting someone fired, because this is the South, and for some reason we’re fine with insane degrees of violence but turn into cowed peasants the minute someone points to the word “Sex.”*

*Reminder: You still need to sign a waiver-type thing to buy a dildo in Alabama.

The most shocking thing about it is that Houston Nutt just blew up a dude’s life for revenge. He had motive, sure, and Freeze had certainly set up enough debts he could not possibly pay off. No one can argue that, or that Freeze did not reel the entirety of his dick—literally in this case—out there to trip over in disastrous fashion.

Yes, yes it would be.

"You love me, right Lane?"

"*checks Twitter* Mmm, hmm."

"No matter what Lane?"
"Mmm hmm"

"Even if an SEC job should suddenly become available?"
"Mmm hm...wait, which one?"

SBNation just posted a series of articles on the crazy 2007 college football season. It's massive, and a nice reminder of what a wacky season that was - https://www.sbnation.com/a/2007-college-football-season

Houston Nutt's civil suit got dismissed. So at least Hugh Freeze has that going for him.

And those escort #s.

This Bleacher Report story on Kiffin is quite something - http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2729199

In a profession filled with assholes, Kiffin reigns supreme.

How Kiffin continues to circle like a floating turd still amazes me.

In other news, the OSU Beavers were supposed to be decent this year...  They got pummeled by Colorado State in their opener:

That game was close until early 3rd when back-to-back turnovers killed the Beavers. I stepped away, came back and all of a sudden it was 51-27.

Let the Florida State/Alabama hype begin!

Did you see McElwain's wife troll OSU on Twitter after that game? Wow.

I will be DragonCon-ing. I figure by the looks on the returning football fans I will quickly tell who won the game.

One second. One freaking second away from going down as possibly the greatest team ever...

At least we got rid of Kiffin. I'm excited to see how Daboll runs the offense, especially with the talent we have at the skill positions. If Hurts progresses as a passer, this could be a historic offense.

Either way, as always, Roll Tide.

You guys see that Ohio State coordinator digging for gold knuckle-deep?

I didn't even read that entire article and I could tell it was all about Kiffin's assholery. Only someone so hateable could get fired while his plane was still taxiing to the terminal.

I'm glad they'll always be film of Saban ripping him a new one of the sidelines.

Oh no! We suck again!

When you have three quarterbacks, you really have none.

Well you could be FSU and have zero. Although I am excited about James Blackman getting reps. I've heard he's looked great in the Spring. Maybe they can run the single wing since they have so many RBs.

Wow, Josh Rosen.

And wow, Texas A&M.

Not nearly as bad as the lead the Falcons blew in the SB but still pretty damm bad!

Is Rosen's stock so high now that he's the #1 pick? I'm thinking def. top 3-5, but I'm not nearly as big a CF guru as some of you on here, what  ya'all think??

Fuckin' Vols. Ga Tech leads 14-7 at the half and it feels like a blowout. Is it bad that Tennessee's new QB looks terrified he drops back to pass, and they made him throw 20 times in the first half? That feels bad.

So the Vols won, and I'm still not sure how they did it. It's going to be a long, stressful season.

The FSU/ULM game has now been cancelled, and one UM asst coach was heard saying there's "no way" any college football will be played in Florida next weekend either. FSU/UM is scheduled for next weekend. Blergh.

FSU/UM game rescheduled for 10/7.

I'm anxious to see what ailment Urban Meyer has by the end of this season.

Florida has now twice put away then given life to Tennessee.  Unreal.

... before putting the Vols away for good on the worst play ever. BLARGH. Tennessee's coaches simply didn't think Franks could throw it that far. (sigh) They were wrong. An awful loss for Tennessee, but I smoked some kick-ass ribs for the game, which softened the blow.

That UCLA-Memphis game was epic, in an Arena League sort of way.

Yeah, and Gator fans acting like this solved all their problems...
The two head coaches who had the most recent success at UF were personally invested in the school. Spurrier was an alum and Meyer had a close relationship with President Machen. The other head coaches (Zook, Muschamp, McIlwain) are all just there to draw the paycheck. Things will never be as good as they were back in the 80s/90s in Gainesville.
... and yet they can still manage to beat Kentucky. Every. Year.

I'm wondering if FSU will win 6 games this year. I went down the schedule, and one game is gone (vs. ULM) that would have been a win. But honestly, I'm not sure what will happen. Blackman played fine, but whiffing so many times in the red zone is not a good sign.

And fuck every member of Jeff Flanagan's ACC crew. This is the same ref that got suspended a few years ago for royally fucking up the FSU/Miami game in 2012. It makes me long for Ron Cherry's crew.

As an LSU fan, this is really upsetting. Not only is Orgeron on shaky ground, but Jimbo and Tom Hermann who were the other names in the mix are also stinking it up right now.

This is what Clemson does--they steamroll most teams and then lose (or almost lose) to a team, usually in an away game, where they really shouldn't lose. But they'll still be there at the end of the season unless their QB is out for a while.

The Vols are officially trash. The team has given up, and Butch is too shitty of a coach to compensate. The AD apparently called a press conference for this afternoon. That ain't good.

Jesus Christ--BC beat Louisville, Syracuse beat Clemson. These are the 4 teams that FSU plays next. Fucking A.

This season is the opposite of 2014. Everything that fell in favor of FSU--all the last minute wins, etc.--is happening the opposite this season. I can deal with losing, but losing every game in the last minute is fucking annoying.

The highlight of the Vols season? This pic:

...and the longest pass by FSU last night was by one of their RBs. I'm glad I ended up passing a heart stress test earlier this month so now I know this season won't kill me. At least not by a heart attack. I gleefully await the UF game to end 0-0 at regulation.

If this was any other year, I'd say UF would win this just because that's what happens in this series.

But no way. UGA might get another couple of 15-yard celebration penalties the way they are gonna run it up today.

Gators working hard to try and buyout McElwain, but with a smaller number.

McElwain's agent is Jimmy Sexton. Good luck with that.

Rumors now that McElwain's been fired and Randy Shannon will be the interim coach.

So since Spurrier, the Gators are 1-3 on coaching hires. Not a great track record.

People think UF is a place anyone can win at with the bevy of talent but there's a lot of things working against you - and the legacy of Spurrier is just one of them. I don't know who the right hire is, but it's got to be someone who is either emotionally invested in the program (like Spurrier was) or someone who will literally work himself to death to make it work (like Meyer).

Word was that Spurrier offered his assistance on offense to Mac--TWICE--and Mac said "No thanks, I got it."

Dumbass.
